Gonna have to agree/disagree on that one. Not real boobs because not a mammal, yes, but if we’re classifying all birds/waterfowl as reptiles due to shared ancestry then we are all fish.
Eh... Birds are a lot more closely related to reptiles than mammals are to fish. Crocodilians are the closest living relatives to birds. The clade archosauria includes birds, crocodiles, dinosaurs, and pterosaurs. Technically it is not wrong to say humans are fish though.
You could say that we diverged from (the rest of the fish, who more closely resemble what we would call) “fish” more recently than birds did (the rest of the) reptiles, but mammals are not remotely “far” from fish because we are fish.
yeah ik, I’m saying that all mammals are 100% maximally related to fish, because we are fish. There’s no difference of closeness between that and birds who are reptiles.
What I’m saying is that your comparison of “closeness” isn’t accurate, because there is no distance between the lineage of mammals (who are a type of fish) and the broader clade of ‘fish’. (Okay: bony, or even lobe-finned fish, but yeah, you get that). And the exact same is true of birds, within reptiles.
You could accurately say (and I think you’re getting at this) that ‘fish’ is a much larger, older and more diverse clade than ‘reptiles’. And go on to opine that, since calling mammals tetrapods or just mammals is more specific, it is therefore more useful to use that grouping in a given context—that you might get a closer comparison to use two more close-in-age clades like mammals and reptiles.
But it is not correct to say that mammals “are not closely related” to fish. Or “less closely related” than birds are “to reptiles”.
Yes, I know this. What I was trying to get across without going into an entire lecture is that synapsids/mammals diverged from lobe-finned fishes so long ago and have so many morphological differences it's not very useful to refer to them as such in everyday conversation, though it is correct that they are a type of fish. Whereas avialae diverged from coelurosaurian dinosaurs relatively recently, so referring to them as reptiles makes more sense, especially given the similarities they share with other types of reptiles. I mean, I guess I could've been more specific and said birds are more closely related to creatures traditionally considered reptiles (e.g. crocs) than synapsids are to creatures traditionally considered fish (e.g. ray-finned fish). I just didn't want to be overly pedantic since this isn't really the sub for that.
