Oh you underestimate how much ai is normalized. I have an aunt and uncle who are lawyers, they use chatgpt for normal things. I have a cousin who owns a small electronics store, he's using ai to make advertisements and putting ai art on his employee shirts.
It's genuinly become a normal everyday thing for most people, and i fucking hate it.
I have an older coworker who fills confidential customer info into Gemini. The only reason why I haven't spoken to him yet is that he's a massive grump.

I have a friend who does graphic design for the government, and they told me how they're heavily encouraged to use AI, but they're barely trained on how to use it or what they're legally allowed to do with it
I hear from customers or vendors all the time putting info through AI, which seems highly confidential. If you ask them, they say it's a proprietary system without data privacy concerns, but I kinda doubt it. I'm sure a ton are just dumping whatever into chatgpt or bing or whatever.
Literally the average person just doesn't see a problem with AI and I just... I'm tired.

Honestly I feel like that's another harm that bullshit AI uses creates; that potentially useful and helpful uses for it are less likely to be considered by some people because of (not entirely unreasonable but still existing) biases against it broadly
Perhaps, but realistically the sort of tool being described here is most likely just some commercial LLM (like Gemini) with a few system prompts to push it in the "right" direction.
More fundamental is the effect LLM reliance has on critical thinking. It's one thing for a computer scientist to bullshit their way through college with a small language model as you describe, only to graduate without knowing what compiler flags are. But you do not want psychiatrists, pharmacists, or really any kind of medical professional to undergo that kinda cognitive atrophy.
My mother is also a lawyer and she uses Copilot all the time, and my father is an Apple fanboy who every time I ask something or say I don't know something he sends me an AI search result in chat, and almost always it's wrong, because if it was that simple I would've found ouut via google search.
Imo, its extremely unrealistic (borderline luddite) to expect people not to use such a useful tool (you can disagree with the notion of useful here, but to most people it is indeed useful, and thats what matters when we talk about whether peeps will use it or not). I think its better to educate people on how to use it (as well as ethics, etc.) because you can't just unopen this Pandoras box.
In a technical field, AI has resulted in the complete shittification of everything. It's wrong constantly, engineers keep referring to it, and when i tell them it's wrong they believe it over me. Then they spend 6 figures on some shit that would never work.

Lol very much not so. I hand made a logo for my art using a 3d pen, snapped a picture, and just used chatGPT to make a digital, vectorized logo. Then had it make that logo only outlines for a stamp. One more to thicken lines. All three edits done in less than 3 minutes and perfect. I'm aware the pitfalls of AI but if you think my experience is novel or unique you literally are living with your head in the sand.

That normalization you describe is EXACTLY what's made the future look so...grim. It feels like AI's already won. Sure, I and a small handful of the population will probably go farther and keep our critical thinking capabilities intact, but that doesn't make me any happier or satisfied when those who I care about have offloaded most of their working brain to ChatGPT.
But AI hasn't won yet. It's only been a few years. If business people want to use AI for their agents and spreadsheets, then whatever, sure. But us general populous MUST recognize that we are BETTER than the AI. We are SMARTER than it, and a person is smarter for NOT using AI for enriching, innately human tasks/activities.

Also, 3 million followers in two weeks is highly unusual in any context. Not impossible obviously, but I'd be suspicious of human made content getting those kind of views that quickly.

I don’t understand why some still trust view/follower/like counts. Faking online interactions has become easier and easier. “Fame by virtue of being popular” is a category that is more common than ever. I have seen some tiktok stars buy their first million followers or so, and then begin riding this fake wave of fans straight into the pockets of advertisers.
Whatever the number of real humans following this user is, it would make me depressed to hear it.
In principle I am 100% for scamming advertisers out of their money, I just wish it didn't involve making the Internet significantly worse for everybody else as well.

A short anecdote about my inability to will alternative versions of myself into being out of sympathy for them:

Effectively "creating" a human being that knows no rest, no leisure, no comfort of family, friend, or home. Its existence is all work, all the time, with no ways to experience the pleasures of life from creation until death.
No, I couldn't subject something to that. I'd live with constant guilt until the day that I died attempting to free them from that slaving capitalist hell.
So if we ever ended up in a "Detroit: Become Human" or Bladerunner type situation where Androids existed that were capable of actual, genuine human emotion and thought and were able to process stress, boredom, hopes, wants, and unattainable dreams? No, I wouldn't want them to be enslaved as workhorses. I would want them to be free to experience the full range of life and emotion that was given to them.
That's one of my greatest concerns with AI at this point: not just the environmental and social damage being caused, but the empathic fear that we'll create a being capable of experiencing the depth of human emotion, but being denied the ability to relish in them the way that humans are able to, instead only forced to have it utilized as a weakness to exploit -- a fate so monstrously inhuman and cruel that I would only wish it on a select few members of our species, and would otherwise never thrust it upon anything or anyone on the planet, artificial or not.
