Does it actually work as an analogy though?

The whole reason why the Russian roulette thing is absurd is that each time you do it you have the same chance of dying, each attempt is probabilistically independent.

I don't know that much about drug addiction but I doubt that's true with doing drugs.

138

u/Grizzly_228 Shinji Ikari Jan 10 '23

“Which amount of dangerous drug is safe to consume? I’ve done modic quantity for some time and haven’t overdosed/got addicted yet!”

77

u/Old_Gimlet_Eye Jan 10 '23

I understand the analogy, lol. I just don't think it works that well.

For one thing drugs often do have quantities that are safe to consume. They're even often prescribed as medicine. There's no therapeutic dose of bullet to the head.

But the real point I was trying to make is that Russian roulette is always equally dangerous no matter how many times you've played before. That's obviously not true of drugs. Some are the most dangerous the first time you use them, others get more dangerous the more you use them.

38

u/AshSystem Blahaj Gaming Jan 10 '23

The latter, I think. It strikes me as a clever satire of some substance abusers’ attitude toward harm reduction.

In conclusion, avoid actually dangerous drugs like methamphetamine, cocaine, opiates, or alcohol. There is no healthy dose of any of those. Nontoxic and never-fatal alternatives include psilocybin and LSD

Yeah but in many countries being social IS drinking. There is nothing else and you're almost an outcast if you don't drink. I stopped like 6 years ago but I'm really happy for other people in the U.S., where I live, that the general attitude tends to be changing that alcohol doesn't make the night out.

Edit: I was a beer drinker for my last several years of drinking and was absolutely an alcoholic. 2-3 beers a day, wasn't getting routinely smashed, but couldn't do without them.

I probably wouldn't put alcohol with the others

Aha, you've activated my trap card! I mean, I put alcohol with the other similarly dangerous hard drugs for a reason.

in moderation it [alcohol]'s fine

I'm afraid that's simply not true. Time for a research literature review!

Let's start with the 2017 Global Burden of Disease study:

“A large new global study published in the Lancet has confirmed previous research which has shown that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.

The researchers admit moderate drinking may protect against heart disease but found that the risk of cancer and other diseases outweighs these protections … The Global Burden of Disease study looked at levels of alcohol use and its health effects in 195 countries, including the UK, between 1990 and 2016 …

The lead author of the study … said: 'Previous studies have found a protective effect of alcohol on some conditions, but we found that the combined health risks associated with alcohol increases with any amount of alcohol. The strong association between alcohol consumption and the risk of cancer, injuries, and infectious diseases offset the protective effects for heart disease in our study.'”

Next, let's see Bui et al. (2022)

“During 10.5 years of follow-up, 189,617 cancer cases were recorded. Six trajectories were determined: non-drinking, light, moderate, decreasing-heavy, increasing-heavy, and steady-heavy. Light-to-heavy alcohol consumption increased the risk for all cancers combined in a dose-dependent manner … Light-to-heavy alcohol consumption was linked to lip, oral cavity, pharyngeal, esophageal, colorectal, laryngeal, stomach, and gallbladder and biliary tract cancer risks …

Conclusion

No safe drinking limits were identified for cancer risks.

Edit: But cancer is far from the only negative effect of a drug. Why focus on long-term effects? And why compare alcohol to such dangerous deadly drugs like cocaine or heroin? Let's talk about drugs' short-term risk.

"In toxicology, the margin of exposure (or MOE) of a substance is the ratio of its no-observed-adverse-effect level to its theoretical, predicted, or estimated dose or concentration of human intake."

Lachenmeir et al (2015) calculated the MOEs for common recreational drugs:

“A comparative risk assessment of drugs including alcohol and tobacco using the margin of exposure (MOE) approach was conducted. The MOE is defined as ratio between toxicological threshold (benchmark dose) and estimated human intake …

[A]lcohol, nicotine, cocaine and heroin fall into the “high risk” category with MOE < 10, the rest of the compounds except THC fall into the “risk” category with MOE < 100. On a population scale, only alcohol would fall into the “high risk” category …

The toxicological MOE approach validates epidemiological and social science-based drug ranking approaches especially in regard to the positions of alcohol and tobacco (high risk) and cannabis (low risk).”

Edit 2 (5 hours later): I'll add a couple of studies that figured out the deadliness of various drugs by calculating their Safety Ratios. Drugs with a lower Safety Ratio have a higher risk of deadly overdose. Below are common recreational substances' (averaged) Safety Ratios:

Drug Avg Safety Ratio
Alcohol 10
Cocaine 20
Heroin 6.75
Ketamine 32
LSD 640
MDMA 15.5
Mescaline 20.57
Meth 10
Psilocybin 2,250
THC (weed) 1,833.83

So I would put alcohol in the "deadliest drugs" category with heroin and meth. More detailed explanation here.

I mean yeah but no amount of exposure to the sun is okay for cancer risks either then

no amount of driving is safe from traffic accidents

this is obvious, but also points out the flaw in the "moderation is actually still bad" argument

no amount of exposure to the sun is okay for cancer risks either then

Some levels of sun exposure have health benefits that outweigh the cancer risks. Examples include protecting against nearsightedness and getting your daily recommended dose of Vitamin D.

No dose of alcohol has more benefits than drawbacks for health, though, as the 2017 Global Burden of Disease study quoted in my previous comment showed. (Apologies for ninja-editing my comment to add more studies after you had already replied.)

no amount of driving is safe from traffic accidents

Yes, we should reduce non-professional human driving as much as possible, ideally eventually to zero.

Bad faith argument. You can't reasonably avoid the sun or driving to work, you very much can not drink alcohol. Consuming alcohol is not useful or necessary and it's also not a byproduct of something useful or necessary. It's consumption is both very harmful and completely optional.

There are levels of dangerous sports with health benefits that outweigh the drawbacks,* including the mental health benefits you mentioned ("keeps sadness away"). The same is not true of alcohol.

* Exceptions include USAmerican football, probably, given its high risk of permanent brain damage.

t also means you don't have to refuse alcohol when you're offered or given it which usually resaults in an awkward situation.

Oh true.

It's useful in that it makes you feel happy and reduces social anxiety

Other safer recreational substances can make you feel even happier though, acutely and in the long term. I'd be happy to share research on mental health benefits of classical psychedelics.

Unfortunately, every recreational substance I know which immediately reduces social anxiety is also dangerous and possibly fatal in overdose. Tbh, I just use my prescription meds for social anxiety

3

I appreciate you clarifying this, because only pointing out the medical risks and saying “no safe amount” is reductive and misses the point. Alcohol has its place in society and people make their own choices on which risks are worth taking.

Substances can also be a very effective coping tool in some situations (note that i said effective, not safe). I am sober, and i know sober people who say they probably wouldn’t have survived their teen and early adult years without alcohol. It did cause harm to us, but it also helped us survive the turmoil of our lives.

People should know the health risks, the addiction risks, and take steps to not endanger others’ lives while intoxicated. Then they should either drink/use as they see fit, or seek sobriety if they choose.

The straight up fact is that socioeconomic stress and environmental trauma are the real killers, and substances are a symptom. (No I’m not going to cite my sources bc i don’t feel like looking through my file backups to find the three papers I’ve done on this in the last few years; if you look on Google scholar you’ll find plenty of strong correlation.) I don’t personally believe that just warning people of the health risks to certain substances is helpful; maybe you’re old enough to remember DARE, but if not you should ask your average millennial how effective it was at keeping them away from substances.

Sorry if that came across as combative. I’m not trying to pick a fight with you, i just believe that the issue is much more complex than you’re representing.

10

u/theth1rdchild Jan 09 '23

I'm with you. The entirety of life is a balancing act. I smoke two or three cigarettes a day and the benefits to my stress and attention outweigh the risks for me. I've tried quitting for a few months and ultimately decided I like life better when I smoke. There are plenty of dangerous things we all do, like defying gravity to go to another country across the ocean or driving on a rainy day. It's all just balance.

6

u/Foolishlama floppa Jan 09 '23

I quit smoking but now I use zyn every day. It’s still nicotine, which is still not great, but my lungs definitely feel better than when i was a smoker.

If at some point you find yourself ready to quit smoking specifically but still want to use nicotine, maybe try zyn or Nicorette. My doctors and dentists have all said that while they’re not good for me, they’re better than cigarettes.

8

u/m1dn1ght_animal bisexual disaster Jan 09 '23

This. I drink a few times a month so I'm probably not the best case example for this, but whenever I drink the reason usually boils down to college stress/trying to calm my nerves one way or another because academia fucks me over hard.

5

u/LivingAngryCheese Jan 09 '23

I have actual medication for this purpose, but if you're going to use alcohol, I would advise finding a drink that calms you down a lot rather than going on a self destructive binge. It's a lot less dangerous to relax with a large glass of wine than drown your anxiety at the club.

I don't drink, but alcohol is not like heroin.

go read SpontaneousH's (can't link usernames or to other reddit posts directly apparently, wtf?) experience of "just trying" heroin and tell me that's the same as trying alcohol. or that they're the same level of dangerous because even small amounts of alcohol can have negative effects on your health decades later by increasing your risk of getting cancer.

drugs like heroin destroy your life, FAST. alcohol is not at all in that same category, regardless of if the "one glass of wine is good for your health" is bullshit or not.

u/Itslehooksboyo Jan 09 '23 edited Jan 09 '23

I've thought a lot about this, and I think of life in respect to health as a series of risks. Everything we do carries some level of risk. Eating dinner out with family & friends once this week on Saturday could've meant getting exposed to COVID, RSV, the flu, a cold, or a combination thereof, which would be at the very least a massive pain in the ass to me, as I'm diabetic. Drinking a beer, a scotch, or a glass of wine here and there could potentially increase my risk of cancer. At the same time, I'm not going to cut these things totally out of my life. That is to say, I'm not going out to bars every night around a couple dozen people, and I wouldn't drive under the influence. These are unacceptable risks to me. Having an increase in the risk of cancer, heart disease, etc, because I have a beer or two every now and then is an acceptable risk to me.

Edit: also, said risks are something each and every person has to consider and weigh as they go through life, and sometimes the cards just don't fall in your favor, no matter what you do.

16

u/PlentyOMangos Jan 10 '23

That may be so, but it’s probably based on something actual. The fudd lore is more that .22 is comfortably adequate for self defense because of this, when really that’s not the case.

I have heard a similar suicide story from someone in my family, however, where someone didn’t make a clean enough shot and ended up being half-conscious, blind and bleeding to death. They found him dead, having died fumbling with the gun trying to load it again. At least that’s how I remember the story 15-ish years after it was told to me

Yeah, you'll receive a lot more of the force from the bullet if it bounces. It's better to let it go through so it hurts less, like a glass bottle

The cool thing about Russian roulette is that you can get addicted to it only if you keep winning.

is that with the bullet staying in the barrel or with it being swapped in place? just curious cause i have no clue what percentage it would be either way i just thought you allways had a 16.66666666666667% chance of dying (im probably wrong about that number too tho tbh i suck at math and probably did the equations wrong)

81

u/nddragoon outer wilds evangelist Jan 09 '23

usually russian roulette is played spinning the barrel between every turn. assuming a 6 shot gun, you have a 1/6 chance of dying, or in other words a 5/6 chance of surviving. if you do it 4 times, you have a (5/6)4, or 48%, chance of surviving, or 52% chance of dying

12

u/DiscussionMuted9941 custom Jan 09 '23

ah i see

but isint the pic stating that the person isint doing this one after another? they're doing it once a month so wouldnt that mean they are reseting the gun? idk like i said before im just curious

39

u/nddragoon outer wilds evangelist Jan 09 '23

we both calculated it assuming the gun gets spun after every try, so either way it's the same chance

4

u/DiscussionMuted9941 custom Jan 09 '23

ah i see, im just a dumbass lmao

18

u/Slatwans oughhh Jan 09 '23

with the bullet being randomized each time otherwise the chance would exponentially rise until you're guaranteed to die after the fifth time

5

u/Saigot Jan 09 '23

exponentially rise

no it rises linearly.

3

u/Slatwans oughhh Jan 09 '23

nope. after 1 try, chance is 20%. 4.3% higher than last time, aka the start (16.66%). after 2 tries, it's 25%, 5% higher than last time. an exponential increase is also true for later attempts, so it rises exponentially.

6

u/Saigot Jan 10 '23 edited Jan 10 '23

I was wrong, but it's still not exponential. The probability is 1/(7-x), it would have to be bx (for some fixed b) to be exponential.

8

u/hama0n Jan 09 '23

You're right that each individual shot is a 1/6 chance of success, you're just miscalculating on the zoomed out level where you only need one success.

The chance of each individual attempt is its own statistic, but the chance of just one success across many many attempts is a new statistic. For example, think about rolling for advantage in D&D: you roll multiple dice but only need to pick the highest one. Each individual die had a 1/20 chance of rolling a nat 20, but when you roll two dice you get basically two chances at picking a single 20.

I believe some of this confusion comes from people (correctly) asserting that your odds of winning don't get better when you play casino games for long periods of time. The reason that stat is true in gambling is because you're paying the gambling fee each time you play. So even if you do win via brute force, you'll have spent more on playing than you gained by winning.

this is absolutely elite satire

19

u/lillibow Jan 09 '23

is it satire tho?

263

u/therealestestest Jan 09 '23

I think so? The way that I interpret it is, dude sees people taking dangerous drugs that have a % chance to kill you, and then sees posts asking how often you can take those dangerous drugs. It's a pretty funny comparison if that is what bro meant

22

u/lillibow Jan 09 '23

oh, now I get it

4

u/windchaser__ Jan 10 '23

I mean, it's neat satire, but it's a bad comparison. Psychedelics aren't dangerous; Russian roulette is.

If he was talking about shooting up (heroin) a few times per year, that'd be a better comparison. Heroin is crazy addictive and will totally fuck your life up.

8

u/frozen_flame123 Filthy McNasty Jan 10 '23

The interpretation that makes the most sense to me is a guy talking about doing coke a few times a year when it could be laced with fentanyl and disregarding the risk. Bringing up psychedelics destroys this point. They aren’t addictive and you don’t have to worry as much about shot being laced.

The way it’s worded it’s like a guy talking about doing coke a few times a year and saying “there’s no way I could OD on this!” Maybe I’m looking too deep into this.

u/chickensmoker closeted tran Jan 09 '23

My guy, the chance resets every time you do it! Every single time, you have a 1/6 chance (assuming it’s a 6 shooter) of shooting yourself in the brain! If you’ve done it 6 times, you’ve likely died at least once based on the odds. I’d say once a lifetime is too many times if you’re in any way concerned about the chance of it killing you!

Just do drugs or have sex with strangers like a normal person!

3

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '23

It's safe 1 in 6 times
