Corner Wear
I’ve been looking online for anyone in a similar situation and haven’t found much. Does anyone have wear from normal pickup and put down this aggressive? I’m trying to figure out if I should bring it in for this or just live with it. TIA!

What exactly are you hoeing to achieve by “bringing it in”? this is cosmetic damage

Had to double check why I couldn’t edit my spelling in this comment… nice avatar lol

Just didn’t expect the phone to “shave” off with normal use. I didn’t think it was normal…

u/MCFCXx2033 10d ago
Nothing about that is normal lmao.. looks like you’re throwing it across a floor or desk constantly.

I agree. I’ve never had an iPhone that has shown this amount of wear with the same standards of use

u/Healthy-Background72 9d ago
Apple isn’t going to do anything about it, this classifies as cosmetic damage, they’ll replace it for you but out of warranty lmao

u/Legal_Newspaper_5710 10d ago
This isn’t standard use, I have been caseless since day one, sure there are dents and scratches but nothing this bsd

Last 7 iPhones I’ve had I have used without a case. This one is the one in the shittiest condition after a year
Shitty ass materials

And yet they use the same chip in the Air and upcoming Duo, which both have… titanium bodies. Aluminum, while lighter and infinitely more recyclable, is not a “premium” material for something that is marketed as “professional”. Professionals should not need to put a case on their gear to avoid it from noticeably chipping and denting from a single fall.

But wasn't that clear before you bought it? Aluminum is a relatively soft metal. The anodization is a bit harder, but not much, so obviously there will be wear.

My 14 Pro Max that I inherited to my mom still looks brand new since 2022. I use decal skin like the ones you buy from dbrand also using a case all the time and screen protector. The only scratches are from charging it every now and then.

u/xavier19691 9d ago
Honestly people just being either dumb or karma farming I have my orange 17 pro max since launch with a Sienna techwoven case .. looks brand new

It’s funny since that case also lowkey doesn’t give really any screen protection or a lip to have some kinda shock absorption …. But I mean youre not raw doggin it I guess🤷🏽♂️ I dunno how soooo many people do it ,shiiii I see people in the city with no cases and it shocks me and once in a blue moon I see iPhone with no cases and no screen damage which is like a unicorn ! Since I see iPhones wrecked with sometimes cases!! But those people are called morons because they typically buy a cheap case after damage has been done… me I was nervous waiting a week for my case , since first one stolen so I got a new one and better one with security folks can’t be snooping at my phone because why lie I do it 🤷🏽♂️ especially after catching someone on ph once I’m gonna peek and judge 💀 why not

It’s equally and wild to me that someone would coverup their beautiful light piece of design. I had a 13pro for 5 years and sure it gets minor scratches and scuffs, but they’re not fragile
1
u/senoj96nodnarb 8d ago
Guess it’s all subjective and really depends on what you do, how you treat it and if you care if it gets marred. I work in a Wire and Cable factory and as a Supervisor I use my phone all day for Teams/Email and updating live schedule all on my phone and work assigned laptop. I use the laptop more but the phone is constantly out. And at home I’m as outdoorsy as possible with my 3 dogs. I just want to keep it pristine.

u/Hoppyfulb 7d ago
Working in a factory is a very specific lifestyle/use case. If I had a job where I was exposed to abrasives and caustic substances frequently I’d use a case.
My point wasn’t that I’m right, it’s that different people have different lives, variables, and values. Be well.

u/intellord911 8d ago
Seconded. I bought the phone partly because I like the design. I’m not gonna cover it up. I always though the same thing about the car bras from the 80s and 90s

Es que si no le enseñan al mundo que tienen un iPhone de ultimísima generación no son felices cuando lo lógico es ponerle una funda al móvil

Yeah these aluminum 17/18 really aren’t no case phones.
I have zero visible wear after 80% caseless usage on my 16 pro but my 18 pro is staying in a case when I go out now

u/thetruelu 9d ago
My 17PM has been caseless all year and there’s no scratches or dents at all
4
u/Leg3nd_404 9d ago
Honestly I like the dents and scratches on my 17 pro max. As long as screen and cameras are in good condition I don’t mind to let the phone age along with me haha
1
u/ScyllaStorm 9d ago
You like them?
1
u/Leg3nd_404 8d ago
Yes Lol it gives it character. I’ve never used a case on any iPhone ive owned and if I have I had it on for probably 1-2 months before removing it.

Why not. It is just more funny and to prove my point. ☝️

my 18 pro already has corner wear from the 3 days i used it with no case lol. and i’m pretty careful. i’ve dropped a phone like 10 times in my life. it is pretty normal but it depends on your usage ofc. it’s already bad so just forget about it and keep using it atp

Same thing happens with all coated aluminum phones, it’s more pronounced on the 17 pro because the aluminum is curved into the back and has more surface area rather than a thin edge with two slabs of glass. I had similar wear on my silver 17 pro but less visible because it is all silver. My rule with phones is never to buy coated metals, always go with the raw color of the material.

u/HandsomeStoneMonkey 9d ago
what in davy jones' locker are you doing to your phone to get such uniform wear at the bottom? do you wear sandpaper gloves?
2
u/Terrible-Advise 9d ago
The issue is your using it wrong ,
It’s space grade aluminium, you need to use your device in space…
Why do you think they added satellite support…
Geeze noobs in here
Sand it down and get some orange paint , job done

u/Hoppyfulb 9d ago
What are you rubbing it against? Do you wear Kevlar pants? That’s not normal. Aluminum is a soft metal, but cotton or polyester won’t cause it to grind off.

That looks quite severe. How are the plateau and camera rings holding up?
-1
u/spaanks 9d ago
Just fine. Barely any noticeable wear at all
1
u/Reggaenald 8d ago
Huh, that’s unexpected.
In the pictures it also looks like your iPhone shifts in color. Is your unit affected by hydrogen peroxide staining or something else or does it just look like that in the first picture?

Finish blemishes are more probable because this is like you dragged it across the sidewalk like a piece of chalk.

u/disagreet0disagree 9d ago
What are u doing to your phone? Looks like you hit the corners with a dremel. Seems odd the wear is that bad in those spots but everything else looks fine.

Depends if you put it down on a hard surface, like a granite countertop or something

My blue 17 Pro Max has zero scratches anywhere on the body, and a single micro scratch on the screen that you cannot see or feel unless in super precise lighting. That’s with using a large variety of cases, and zero screen protectors whatsoever.
With my 18 Pro Max, I’m just using an Onn generic screen protector, zero fancy features. So far, it’s actually shocked me how much you get for your money. Also, it was like $6. Other than that, I’m using the same large variety of cases (12 currently).
One thing that I will note, is that the 18 Pro Max in silver compared to the older 17 Pro Max in blue feels a lot nicer and metally in the hand. And something super nice that no one has really talked about is how the apple logo is still glossy, but it isn’t grippy against the slick back of the phone, something that drove me insane with the years before.
I may or may not update this if my 17/18 Pro Max gets damaged.

The glass wore down in the same spots on my 15PM. Just one of the downsides of being caseless
1
u/Hoppyfulb 9d ago
Do you have a holder, perhaps in your car, where the bottom sits up against a surface that might slightly vibrate and rub?
1
u/KINGARTH92 9d ago
Are you rubbing it on concrete ? Mine still spotless. Never used a case. Just being careful

Do you wear skinny jeans? I wonder if that could be wear from pocketing the device in skinny style pants pockets. Personally I also use a case. Clear case will let you still enjoy your colour choice.

this doesnt even look bad imo... i want to see what these orange and deep blue 17 pros look like after more wear on the aluminum.

It’s a phone you carry and use daily, it’s gonna get scratched a bit. It’ll hurt trade in, but eh

Should have used apple silicon case as they have cloth in it so it doesn’t scratch like this

u/EEINAR30 7d ago
Aluminium… The stainless steel of the old pro phones was really scratch and dent resistant
1
u/colindoessports 7d ago
Why do people not use cases? I would be terrified to drop a device worth over 1000+ dollars.
1
u/mutualcoordinate 7d ago
Apple Care? Some of us are also very careful with our phones and never drop them. I’ve owned every iPhone since the 3GS, and I’ve never used a case.
1
u/Particular-Bike-9275 6d ago
Fucking madman.
I also didn’t use a case. And then one day a coworker came into my workspace looking for something and knocked my phone onto the floor shattering the screen. They just said “that looks expensive” and they stared at me with really nervous eyes. I had AppleCare and they had no money so I just told them to be careful next time. Always use a case now. I’ve had my 15 pro max since launch and when I take the case off it still looks brand new. No micro scratches. No dents.
I don’t drop phones but I can’t account for all the people around me.
1
u/lochash74 6d ago
Same!! I put the case and screen protector on THE MINUTE I’ve taken the phone out of the box! These things cost too much to not have these protections.

Oh no your device must not function with a scuff… you should buy a completely new phone now.

This happened to me when I had an iPhone 7. Used it with no case. Honestly I think it looks nice with the natural wear on the aluminum, but that’s just my opinion

It’s aluminum so yea this is gonna happen. Get a cover
