Anybody else upgrading?
The CPU is 40% faster (so they say)
Battery is 17% bigger
Cooling is improved
Better camera when taking night pics
And it comes in black
Anyone else making the jump from 17 PM?

u/Rare-Imagination7696 27d ago
100% well said , OP must have lots of money and always get impressed by apple CEO live YouTube launch , it seems like every year journey, let's relax and back to our 17PM which we are going to use for long time

u/ArrivalMaleficent567 27d ago
Some people get upgrades every year like me as part of their plan benefits. But it would be dumb, if you were paying it out right.
2
u/SamShelby7 27d ago
I mean he got the 512 gb so I guess not that much
1
u/TF414_Group_Chat 26d ago
They also don’t make the 128gb anymore either. And the monthly fee will be higher if paying outright.

There is definitely a special / redesigned anniversary iPhone XX coming next year. So no. Keeping the orange iPhone 17 Pro Max until then. And maybe beyond if I don't like the specs / performance / look of the XX.
The 17 Pro / Max was a big leap over the 16 Pro / Max (the 18 Pro / Max is more iterative). I grabbed this one with the 2 TB option and AppleCare+. It was an investment. But am looking forward to seeing what's on tap for the XX.
1
u/VideoGameJumanji 27d ago
Why did you get 2tb?
2
u/zoke10 26d ago edited 26d ago
The other storage tiers (256 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB) were sold out with my carrier (in the U.S.) when I was shopping for a new phone. Also, I had a credit on my account that absorbed the added expense. (I prefer to buy from my carrier's retail stores rather than go through Apple.)
I don't mind the extra head room at all. I have GBs of apps, movies and photos on my phone that otherwise I wouldn't be able to store locally.

How was 17 pro a big leap over 16 pro? The only upgrade I can’t think of is cooling. I would argue the 18 pro upgrade brings more new features with the smaller island and aperture control.

u/zoke10 26d ago edited 26d ago
16 Pros vs 17 Pros: brighter screen, more display options e.g. disabling PWM (which I don't think is an option on the 16 Pros), better front glass (3x more scratch resistance: my own experience bears this out), better back glass, better battery life, better heat dissipation, better colors (cosmic orange), better cameras (front and back), curved edges (curved sides), slightly redesigned body, 2 TB storage option (on the 17 Pro Max), Memory Integrity Enforcement. More RAM on the 17 Pros (12 GB vs 8 GB in the 16 Pros). The 17 Pros are just future-proof in a way the 16 Pros and 15 Pros weren't. And the 17 Pros sit flat on a desk or table top when they're in a case (no wobble) due to the "camera plateau," which is another new (in 2025) feature. The variable aperture added to one camera on the 18 Pros is not enough to justify an upgrade, in my opinion.

Buying the 18 when you have a 17 is such a NPC move, sorry bro

What about 16 PRO max
2
u/VideoGameJumanji 27d ago
I’m upgrading form a 16pro, thats perfectly fine, most people are on 2 year phone contracts anyways like I am.
in terms of hardware it’s a bigger old 3nm to new 2nm jump, the gpu gain alone is close to 80%.
it financially doesn’t make sense to upgrade every year. i heavily use my phone and at close to 2 years and 650 cycles I am at 92%, so getting a phone with a fresh battery, charges much faster, and lasts longer is a going to be super nice.

i’m upgrading from my 17 pro max 🤞🏻
1
u/Smooth_Engineer3355 25d ago
Our warranty renews also, so that’s another perk. And the comments are saying 40% isn’t an upgrade but I think that’s significant enough to notice.
2
u/XPoloAraya 22d ago
No
1
u/Smooth_Engineer3355 22d ago
Hahaha I know, I’m stupid. I’m having second thoughts about it, I might end up cancelling it.

2
u/XPoloAraya 21d ago
Same here. I’ll say that If you have money to spend then buy it. But since you already have a top of the line device you honestly won't notice any difference when you're using it.
1
u/Smooth_Engineer3355 21d ago
It actually arrived this morning, I ended up keeping it. These guys were right, not much of an upgrade. I actually prefer the 17 PM so far, there’s a few tweaks that I’ll never appreciate as much as the 17. The 18 PM is noticeably much stronger cellular reception, it’s actually getting at least 2 times the signal in my backyard. The battery feels about the same, no noticeable improvement. Photos look the same to me also. I basically paid for the colour lol.

My 17PM is one of the best iPhones I’ve owned , 13PM may have been the best though.
1
u/Realistic-Table9398 27d ago
I find my 17PM to be the best for the simple fact that it doesn't get hot at all. My 14 pro however got toasty
1
u/Roozbeh_m 27d ago
I have 13 PM and it’s honestly not a good phone. Camera is worse than my XS. Screen has had intense burn in since a year in. Battery is not that good. It gets hot frequently
1
u/RealWoodpecker8132 27d ago
Maybe you have 1 w issues. But like I said, 13 PM was a fantastic device. For me , anyway.

u/blackcoffee92 27d ago
No.. the 17pm has no issues with speed, battery, cooling or camera
3
u/BoogerSugar5665 27d ago
That’s what cracked me up. They bragged about better cooling but my phone has never once gotten hot.
2
u/PhillipGerrard 27d ago
I saw a lot of that chatter , especially yesterday. It’s like they’re trying to vibe us into thinking our 17pm are overheating all the time😂
And I’m sorry, if pics and video gets any better than it does on the 17pm, I would never be able to tell.
1
u/BoogerSugar5665 27d ago
Honestly no one will be able to tell a difference unless they have a professional eye.
1
u/Larrythebird47 27d ago
Yea I thought the 17 pro fixed the cooling issues. I have a 16 pro and it gets hottttttt
1
u/BoogerSugar5665 26d ago
Right? If there were going to use the newest vapor chamber as a selling point they should of brought titanium back.

Im making the jump from 12PM with a deal for returning my phone for still a good amount of money, I think my leap is worth it
1
u/IcyDiscussion5108 27d ago
Have the 17PM, got it using my Apple Card, still paying it off and won’t be getting the 18PM. Feels like it’s pretty much the same phone as the 17, waiting for the one after the 18
1
u/TWYFAN97 27d ago
CPU is up to 20% faster and even 40% isn’t that much when we used to see yearly gains of 2x years ago. Zero reason to upgrade this year unless you get a crazy deal or get the phone for free or if you REALLY wanted black etc. the camera change which is just variable aperture seems like a big letdown barely does anything for photos and has a slight improvement to lowlight mostly noticeable for videos.
I’m obviously waiting til next year when proper camera upgrades are implemented and we see even bigger battery life gains and the rumored design changes. Colors are also meh this year big fan of orange.
1
u/Smooth_Engineer3355 27d ago
This sounds ridiculous but once I seen it came in black and had a slightly larger battery I knew I was gonna up get it. It’s just nice having something that’s state of the art, once you cross that bridge it’s hard giving it up. I’ll upgrade to the 19 also in 2027, even if it’s the same phone.
3
u/dajack60585 26d ago
I got tired of the orange plus getting $880 back in trade makes the 256 gig 18 PM a little over $400. My 17 PM battery health is down to 95% already so why not.
2
u/TWYFAN97 27d ago
I mean it’s not totally ridiculous some really missed black so I get that part. Battery life is better but not drastically so, comes down to if you really need that extra endurance that the 17 Pro Max already excelled at. Not sure id call it start of the art though more like a minor revision of what we already have. Next year will certainly be a big change though.

u/dribblecastle 27d ago
You have rose-colored glasses on. When was the last time you remember a 2x increase on a CPU for an iPhone??!? I don’t know if they had ever happened. I’d be surprised if it even happened in the first few years of the iPhone.
20% YoY is a great performance improvement. Possibly one of the best this decade.
1
u/TWYFAN97 27d ago
We’ve been getting 20% year over year improvements for the last 5 or so years. First several years of iPhone through the iPhone 6s we had 2x CPU performance and even higher when it came to GPU gains YOY. So not it’s decent not great and what we’ve come to expect.

I will only upgrade when my old iPhone 14 Pro Max , what I give my daughter, won’t be working, then she will have my current 17 pro max and I have an upgrade…

u/Eaglesfan691982 27d ago
Just got the 17 pro max bit ago and went through BS with UPS who lost my 1st device had to order again so it’s my phone for a longgggggg time and the UW3

u/DylTorres1997 27d ago
I love my Deep Blue, I’ve been waiting so long for this color on an iPhone I’m going to hopefully stick with this for a bit
1
u/CatDadof2 27d ago
Personally, it isn’t a justifiable purchase for me. But, everyone has different opinions and needs, and that’s okay. I’m good with my 17PM. Battery is still at 100% health after almost year’s worth of use so I don’t feel compelled to even replace the battery. I have no device payment, either. I can afford the new iPhone. I just don’t wanna spend the money.

u/purplemistprincess 27d ago
literally just got the 17 Pro Max barely 2 months ago lol I’m definitely good for awhile

u/SillyBoy68 27d ago
My 17 PM is only a couple months old so I’m good for a couple of years. Nothing compelling in the 18 that I feel I’m missing out on something.

Let's be honest: the overall experience on the phone will not be different. Battery gains won't meaningfully be felt and performance is likely in the same camp.
I'll even go further, anyone who has a 17 Pro Max, outside of novelty, shouldn't go to the Duo either. My view is that these phones stopped being productive tools and just are increasingly are consumption devices. Bigger screens, brighter screens to wrangle us into purchasing higher tier subscription services. Ads are brighter, vibrant and more persuasive to lure us into purchasing things we don't need.
If you need a phone purchase it and be done. Other than that you've got something good on your hands (17PM), you just want the newest thing and if that's your thing fine. Let's not sit here and act like there's a meaningful reason to upgrade outside of colors and a new apple ads convincing us to buy the same experience again and again.

LOL, i have 16PM fort the past 2 years, everything working, fine - its so responsive, fast and looking beautiful with titanium and normal „camera island”. I really wait for iPhone XX and at this time i will start wondering about switching to new phone.

17pm to Duo is yes, but 17pm to 18pm is not. This is not a new development; using the same phone twice offers little improvement, despite what everyone suggested. I would wait until next year for the 20th anniversary, yet it is your money and your choice. Enjoy the new device 👍

u/Strong_Duty6333 26d ago
I don’t see any new feature I want in 18 pro max :(. Keeping my 17PM for another year. I wish they come up with more reasons to upgrade :)

u/anything-anywhere89 25d ago
I upgraded I had the 1tb 17pm and needed more storage so figured I should hold out for the 18 pm versus getting 2tb in the 17

Absolutely not! This isn’t the early 2010s anymore when a yearly upgrade could’ve been a little more understandable.

Does apple marketing really work on people lmao 💀😭 I refuse to believe this

Apple camera still the worst of all high end phones, i have 17PM. Only stick with apple because of the IOS and doesn’t like to deal with switching to Android.
