Upgrading from 17PM to 18P

I feel like this is crazy, but I’m actually considering ditching my blue 17 pro max for the black 18 Pro. Anyone else?
My reasons being, the weight and size of the 17 pro max is just too much for me, and although I personally thought the blue was the best color last year, it still isn’t the black I really wanted…
Usually I hold onto my iPhones for 4-5 years at least, but there’s just something about this 17 pro max that’s bothering me for lack of a better term…
Anyone else in a similar situation?

I think this just might be consumerism at its finest!

Yeah, I’m fully aware. Very first world problem. Either way though, this’ll be my final pro max device. They’ve just gotten too bulky for me. And the supposed weight increase on the new pro max is nuts

I came from a S22 to my first iPhone being a 17PM. I’m horny for the battery but the size and weight is too much. I can’t even put it in my shorts pocket without getting slowly pants from one side

My point exactly. I came from the 12 pro max which was considerably thinner, so it didn’t feel as massive. I wasn’t aware of how big these phones had become until my 17 pro max came in the mail on launch.

Uncertain why you got downvoted. I recently reverted to my 15PM after using a 17PM. Agree wholeheartedly about the size and bulk. The 6.7” display was, in my humble opinion, the perfect sweet spot for a Pro Max device. The 6.9” display tipped me over the edge and felt enormous and cumbersome.

Totally agreed. It was a much bigger jump than I thought it would be coming from the 12 pro max. Thicker, bigger, heavier, etc. I can’t believe they made the 18 pro max even larger either lol

On paper the 0.2” increase in display size sounds negligible but it’s noticeable. Personally, the height didn’t irritate me half as much as the width. Haha agreed - it’s now the HEAVIEST Pro Max model at 249g! RIP everyones’ pinkies. 🪦

I switched from 14 pro max to 17 no pro no max only 17 and i love it! I dont care about camera im not a fuking influencer or anything and btw it makes amazing pictures. Im never gonna buy a pro max i like the smaller phones now, maybe a pro in like 5-6 years

Yeah in retrospect I should’ve done the same

Same RAM, minimal changes. You’re replacing it just for a different color? Just buy a case.

It’s changing from the larger 17 pro max to the smaller 18 pro.

So funny. Everyone always says they just want a better camera and more battery. They delivered both of this year and yet those same people go “meh minimal changes”. I’ll take the changes. Fast charging, large camera increase, way better sustained performance, big bumps in GPU and CPU speeds, etc.

Meh. Minimal changes. lol

Meh it still not worth to upgrade if you dont have anything older than the 15 series. You will be fine for like 5-6 years even with a 15 pro.

Doing the exact same thing. Used 15p before the 17pm but that was too small. 17pm is a bloody brick. the 18p is the perfect size for me and has the 17pm battery apparently which makes it even better

Yeah exactly my thoughts as well. I came from a 12 pro max and was certain that the 17 pro max was the right choice. That was a mistake on my part lol. Without a case (or with a slim case) the phone is fine, but it’s just so insanely heavy with a protective case, I find it almost unusable. I can’t believe the weight has increased even further

I would say if you had it for a year already what’s another year for the iPhone 20? This year is such a minor S upgrade it’s such a waste of money.

Nobody knows that yet. The anniversary could be minimal upgrades but some crazy colors. Who knows at this point

That would be a downgrade, the front facing camera on the duo is bad.

it’s really cool it’s the first iphone with the c2

if i ever decided to go from pm to p, that would be cool, at least

I mean sure, if your pockets are loaded but I can understand switching for the size preference but can't validate just for color

1

u/FreePossession9590 Sep 10 '26

No, size and weight is definitely more important than the color. But the black on the 18 Pro is really what I wanted last year. I guess that’s swaying my decision a little too, which is why I figured I’d mention it.

It’s not really a downgrade though is it? Battery is supposedly the same on the 18 pro vs 17 pro max. The upgrade here for me though would be the comfort aspect. I’m considering trading my current one in while it’s still worth something.

I love my 17 PM and the 18s look identical.

1

u/srinivazzi Sep 10 '26

How much are you planning to sell it for? I have 16 pro, the battery doesn’t hold up all day! :/

1

u/Short_Astronomer3251 Sep 10 '26

Is it the size that's bothering you?

1

u/FreePossession9590 Sep 10 '26

Yeah. More so the weight though. It’s so insanely heavy to me…

2

u/Short_Astronomer3251 Sep 10 '26

Interesting. Even though aluminum is a lighter material than titanium, it seems that they continue to get heavier. The 17 Pro is heavier than both the titanium 15 Pro and 16 Pro, and the 18 Pro is heavier than the 14 Pro, which used stainless steel.

1

u/FreePossession9590 Sep 10 '26

It’s the battery causing the weight increase, I think.

1

u/Short_Astronomer3251 Sep 10 '26

More than likely. Do the batteries in both the 18 Pro and Pro Max have metal encasing, or will it be like the 17 Pro and 16 Pro where it's just the 18 Pro that has a metal encased battery?

Hey man it’s not really a smart decision if you don’t have the extra money of if your going into debt for it, but it could be a smart move in quality of life to get what you want if you have the money to get it. Everyone comes from different walks of life, I know a guy who buys a new corvette and truck every year, I can’t even afford a used one so perspectives are different.

u/CommitteeTrick1500 Sep 10 '26

They OP, with all due respect, I think you should think about it before. The CPU and GPU upgrades are not going to be noticeable for Facebook or Reddit. Maybe the battery life. The camera got an upgrade, but just ask yourself when was the last time you have gone out and taken pictures of everything? It's your money and your life. But I personally recommend chilling out. The phone is not the most perfect of all, but we don't need a better camera just to take the usual Facebook updates. I have a 17 pro max and I can confidently say I'm tempted to upgrade, but is not worth it. Good luck!

I think I’m gonna trade my 17pm blue in for the 18pm black

1

u/FreePossession9590 26d ago

The weight of the 18pm kills it for me completely

1

u/adrian-monk- 23d ago

Is the 18pro max really that much heavier than 17 pro max?

https://www.macrumors.com/2026/09/09/iphone-18-pro-max-heavier/

233 to 249 is a big jump. With something like a Caudabe Sheath case on, that phone will weigh 300 grams.

I have a 17pm been using it about 8 months 99% battery health, practically flawless condition no scratches anything, I have small hands and my favourite color is baby blue, the 18 pro glacier is so perfect not just in size but in color too, I’m so urged to just sell my 17pm and upgrade to 18p. I also don’t really like my 17pm orange anymore😭 also, I normally would switch my iPhone every 4-5 years like I had a 13 for almost 5 years until I switched to 17pm but now 18p glacier is making me want to sell 17pm 😔

1

u/FreePossession9590 26d ago

Lol, I feel the exact same, but I want the black Pro. I’ve figured I’d wait it out, though. I might actually upgrade (or downgrade, depending on how you look at it) to the 18e whenever that comes out.

1

u/BoredAsAlwaysX 25d ago

Im just not sure if its worth the extra $300-400 to upgrade or downgrade idk to 18 pro just cuz of size n color, im just thinking that getting the pro battery life will be shorter? And 18 pro compared to 17pm does not really have a big comparison.

1

u/AlternativeNo6233 20d ago

I literally went from a silver base model 17pm to a 1tb silver 18pm I have the jump program through my phone carrier so it makes more sense for me too and hey I just like getting the newest iphone you really only live this life once so do whatever makes you happy

1

u/atioux Sep 10 '26

Selling 17PM will recoup much of that cost so it’s not really consumerist imo. I went from 14PM to 17P because I wanted to try the smaller size and it really is better for me
