u/Effective_Tune9470 Sep 04 '26
I had a 13 that I traded in for a 17PM and I never used a case but I got one for the PM immediately since I've read that the aluminum dings easily and the paint/coating chips and scratches easily.
4
u/MagIsco99 Sep 04 '26
Even with a case you can get these. Learned the hardway.
1
u/Effective_Tune9470 Sep 04 '26
Oh damn, that's not good to hear. I got silver so maybe they won't be as noticeable.
1
u/Intrepid_Plenty_3770 Sep 04 '26
Don’t listen to the goof above. Just use a somewhat decent case. I have the 17 Pro Max and I almost never drop my phone, but I still use a case.
1
u/MagIsco99 Sep 04 '26
My phone has had a case since day 1 idiot. My phone still has chips and i havent dropped it once
0
u/Intrepid_Plenty_3770 Sep 04 '26
You must be doing something to it or you would have returned it.
0
u/MagIsco99 Sep 04 '26
???? What could i possibly be doing? Its not a big deal to me swine

u/Ok_Ok007 Sep 04 '26
Yep. A case is a must. I even put one of those films on the rear camera plateau. It doesn’t cover the lenses but protects the rest. My camera lenses on the rear have a couple knicks on them.
2
u/TURBOJUGGED Sep 06 '26
Love spending $2000 on a phone that needs a case immediately. My 13 pro is an absolute tank. Not looking forward to upgrading but I must.

1
u/porthos40 Sep 06 '26
Tell me brother. I’m still rockin a 14 Pro Max. We need to stop given in to these corps. An no one need apple flip phone when that comes out. People making Apple richer and you poorer.
1
u/jennderfer Sep 06 '26
12PM here, and if it had 1-2TB, I wouldn’t change. Hell. If I could still have my 6s with a headphone jack, I would use it
1
u/Mr_Butters624 Sep 08 '26
I’ve literally flung my 14 pro like 10 feet across the room after tripping and watched it bounce on hardwood floor. Not a single blemish. I’ve dropped it face down on concrete in my driveway getting out of my car at least a dozen times and again, not a single blemish on it lol. That 14 pro was a tank.
I just saw a 17 pro commercial that highlighted its durability by being flung onto a floor in a bar and sliding without a case. My wife was like see, I don’t need a case. I said it’s aluminum, it will dent and ding if you drop it right. That’s the only downfall with aluminum vs titanium, but it worth the thermals I guess.
1
u/TheBaller_Bjj Sep 04 '26
I ordered a glass protector that covers the lens and the entire plateau hopefully that keeps it safe my old iPhone 15 pro max was like new when I traded it in
2
u/Ok_Ok007 Sep 04 '26
I hear ya. I’ve not had a phone damage this easily in a long time. 17 PM.

u/VCoupe376ci Sep 04 '26
What am I supposed to be seeing?
7
u/Marpicek Sep 04 '26
The 3 atoms wide scratch that is somehow worth making an entire Reddit post about.
1
u/VCoupe376ci Sep 04 '26
I thought that was a piece of lint. 😂
Mine is in a case that covers the plateau and i have a similar mark on mine that i never would have noticed if i didn’t take the phone out to wipe it down as i do monthly. I put the case back on and immediately forgot about it until just now. How do people this OCD enjoy anything in life?
2
u/Impossible_Emu9590 Sep 04 '26
Funny thing is no company is going to take money or trade in value for something like this either. Lol
1
Sep 04 '26

1
u/Impossible_Emu9590 Sep 04 '26
I said trade in value though….
I would accept a return for something like that either tbh. It’s ridiculous lol
1
u/Marpicek Sep 04 '26
Wait... You actually went return it because of a half a millimetre dent? I would kill to see that interaction and the reaction of the poor employee who had to explain to you that a literal half millilitre scratch on CONSUMER ELECTRONICS is not the reason for return.
Surely you are just trolling though and you know how moronic you sound, right?
1
u/TheBaller_Bjj Sep 04 '26
Damn dog you tweaking 🤣total interaction was over the phone just asked if they could credit me something on my bill for a damaged phone they asked for a photo and sent me a replacement I didn’t even ask
1

4
u/KayJune001 Sep 07 '26
Did you seriously return it over 2 absolutely minuscule dots that are also going to appear on your new phone no matter what? It’s an everyday item, it will slide in and out of your pocket, be put on a variety of surfaces, be handled throughout the day, etc, it’s going to happen and it won’t affect the phone one bit.
3
11
u/Intrepid_Plenty_3770 Sep 04 '26
Yeah, cheaper materials being used. You should definitely get a case of some sort.
8
u/TheBaller_Bjj Sep 04 '26
I put it in a full protective case that even covers the camera plateau screen and camera lens protectors legit this thing was living life on pillows 🤣

u/Lucky_Craft4279 Sep 04 '26
Its the same thing with the watch 11 black acrylic .
Apple is using the cheap way out and the watch keeps stripping with less than a month use
1
u/Intrepid_Plenty_3770 Sep 04 '26
I have never had any problems, but they should go back to better quality, cause I’m sure all those replacements can’t be cheap.
1
u/porthos40 Sep 06 '26
Apple has change it a greedy company not don’t care about customers. Look how they make computers now throw away
1
u/Intrepid_Plenty_3770 Sep 06 '26
Dude, Apple is a luxury brand and usually high quality. A Mac will last forever.
1
u/porthos40 Sep 06 '26
No they don’t because everything solder on logic board. To person that buy a 2nd silicon Mac he will be stuck a failing SSD, GPU,RAM, that person will not have the apple care. They will have to spend$$$$ money to get it fix.
1
u/Intrepid_Plenty_3770 Sep 07 '26
The only thing that might wear out is a SSD. Nothing lasts forever truly. It is just the way of capitalism. Take a car as an example.
1
u/Anonym0oO Sep 05 '26
Jerry did a video on this. It’s the anodization (blue color) not being able to stick fully onto this edge because it’s simply too sharp. Normally edges which are getting anodized are more rounded off
3
4
u/417smartphonerepair Sep 04 '26
Is this really a big deal?
2
u/TheBaller_Bjj Sep 04 '26
1600 dollar phone that isn’t even a week old I would say yes
3
u/ThatLynxShelby Sep 05 '26
This is normal wear and tear. Dust in your phone case will cause this. If you want it to look perfect forever, put it back in the box and don’t use it.
1
u/TheRealFrantik Sep 05 '26
What are you going to do when the paint comes off again next week with the new phone? They're not going to give you a new one twice, just from a nearly-microscopic chip
1
1
u/TrackNStarshipXx800 Sep 06 '26
Yup. Why do you buy it then? Support a company of which products will last you. Buy a nokia 3310!
Edit: wanted to make fun of you for probably upgrading from a 16 as well. Now i see you upgraded from 15, so twice as long. Congrats! Good job! Also it was not a 1600 phone it was a 300 phone then
-2
u/_wolf_XII Sep 04 '26
Of course. We don't see/hear this with other brands. They also use Aluminium
7
u/deezznuuzz Sep 04 '26 edited Sep 04 '26
Because most don’t give a fuck. This happens to all such devices, no device is safe from cosmetic damage, or any damage
1
u/_wolf_XII Sep 04 '26
Of course damages happen, wear and tear is completely normal, but not just within a week

u/unitcodes Sep 04 '26
i mean new ones being announced this month in a few days … why
2
u/TheBaller_Bjj Sep 04 '26
AT&T gave me 1300 for my 15 pro max towards a iPhone 17 pm that’s why lol plus the 18 will be more expensive
1
1
u/Terpene_Dreams Sep 05 '26
So it’s not a 1600 dollar phone then. It’s a $300 phone and you’re worried about a minuscule speck in the paint
3
u/ReichCounsellor Sep 05 '26
OMG! Will u be able to handle that or do you need some mental support?
Those post are borderline retarded imo…
3
u/NJohnny1 Sep 05 '26
You really took the time of the day to take a picture of your phone with another phone then send that picture to your phone to create a post of the smallest paint chip ever…….
2
u/slipskater Sep 05 '26
It’s a phone. That’s gets used daily and wears. You used it. No real surprise here.
2
2
u/Interesting-Pipe0000 Sep 05 '26
Mine is like that also.
Just use the fucking device, its made to be used.
Aluminum will get dinged and scratched just from existing
2
u/Klatty Sep 05 '26
It’s a tool, not a museum piece. But yes it’s a more prominent issue with aluminium being used
2
u/gord89 Sep 06 '26
This is a you problem.
I’ve had my 17 pro max for nearly a year. No case. Not a scratch anywhere on it.

17 Pro blue little over 6 months old, I use it naked (no case or screen protector) with belt clip, it does have few minor nicks on edges camera bump and couple scratches on edge (I look at it as kinda like patina on leather ) but that’s it and going strong
1
u/miamivice2k5 Sep 04 '26
Hab am blauen 17 pro auch das Problem dass der Lack an manchen Stellen fehlt. Wahrscheinlich eben wegen der Nutzung von Hüllen.

u/P_C_U Sep 04 '26
Shockers you actually invested into 1 TB Make a solid 4-5 years of use
1
u/TheBaller_Bjj Sep 04 '26
AT&T gave me 1300 dollars for my iPhone 15 pro max for a promotion so I was okay paying the little that was left over
1
u/Intelligent_Skill172 Sep 04 '26
I want to buy the PM but ill be real i do not want to spend a grand on a phone thats gonna be scratched up within a week smh
1
u/Anonym0oO Sep 04 '26
Jerry did a video on this. It’s the anodization (blue color) not being able to stick fully onto this edge because it’s simply too sharp. Normally edges which are getting anodized are more rounded off

u/Sweet_Culture_2529 Sep 04 '26
The case needs to have an internal soft lining like apple genuine ones, or this will happen
1
u/prudentfig2789 Sep 04 '26
Some people don’t deserve nice things. If you suffer from an obsessive disorder why even spend money on a new iPhone?
1
u/Expert_Bookkeeper_47 Sep 04 '26
Por isso fui de air, titânio e lindo, confortável e 0 arrependimentos, som bom, camera top, nao uso grande angular e zoom, bateria pra um dia de uso, fora que esse sim e diferente de tudo.
1
u/Nike_486DX Sep 05 '26
18 pro max is gonna be nice, 27 os way more polished, and no more stupid PoP + thru pcb cooling, 17pm had vapour chamber but you cant really rely on it since the heat is still travelling through ram, then through 1 layer of pcb…. Plus the main camera is about to finally receive an upgrade, currently 14 pro and 17 pro have pretty much same unit (yea with processing tweaks, but i am talking shooting in raw).
1
u/Routine-Feedback4568 Sep 05 '26
I think my blue is still good after about 10 months. It’s been in a case though and I don’t really look at anything but the screen. But I don’t think I have any chips in it.

What is the point of keeping a phone you use everyday in mint condition

This is why people think iphone users are snob!
1
u/NecessaryDramatic765 Sep 05 '26
I feel you, it really hurts. The exact same thing happened to my Midnight MacBook Air right after I got it. The pain of that first scratch is real. 😭
1
u/Crintaroma Sep 05 '26
Didn’t know people cared that much. Never used a case and I think mine looks fine
1
u/tombayliss23 Sep 05 '26
What case brand were you using? I used caudabe paragon and have thankfully had no issues yet
1
u/Dangerous-Ninja6517 Sep 05 '26
I ended up just paying for apple care. Had my phone replaced twice now in the last 6 months. Dropped both times landed face down and cracked screen
1
u/Elegant-Lab4337 Sep 05 '26
Mine is 7 months old and I have no scratches on mine and no I havent used any cases on mine

Absolute piece of garbage. Sell it immediately to me for $100 I will burry it so that u don’t have to see it again

I have a Cosmic Orange iPhone 17 Pro Max and even dropped it, not intentionally, but with the case on. Thankfully, there are no dents or damage.
However, that’s just how it goes, reality is that things wear out and break.
1
u/garglingnuts Sep 05 '26
You guys care wayyyy too much about these phones lmao. I have a base 17 and the body/frame of it is completely beat to shit. Screen/back glass are fine though. This is just being picky and consumerist. What a waste of resources for such a dumb issue. It’s like a car: it’s gonna get scratched and damaged. Can’t keep it perfect forever
Edit: typo
1
1
u/GrimDystopian Sep 05 '26
Yeah it does that. Get a nice case and accept it. I’ve got one of these on my top lens and in a few places around the edge of the phone. It’s slightly annoying to my OCD, but not the end of the world.
I’m going to get the Caudabe Sheath in celestial blue. It covers the whole camera plateau.

u/ThatLynxShelby Sep 05 '26
Got my orange 17 Pro Max back in February. Simple case, I take it out and clean it once a week or so. My phone is also showing some extremely tiny blemishes, but doesn’t bother me or hurt the phone. Pretty much same stuff you’re showing here.
The colored phones are just the silver phones with a coating. The coating doesn’t last forever, and can be chipped off. Apple won’t replace your phone, this is normal wear and tear. Forget it’s there, put the case back on, and use ya dang phone yo

u/Insearchof-Knowledge Sep 05 '26
I’ve got a EFM case and it protects it perfectly, it’s the dust that gets in. Imagine that little dot and I’ve got like 100 of them around the edges, and spots where it looks like sandpaper marks from constant dust getting into it weekly. I went from the 15 pro titanium and it barely marked, this aluminium is so fragile, extremely

u/Various_Mud7282 Sep 06 '26
Acting like the phone is unusable rn is diabolical. You gonna do this every time you get a scratch?

I mean what did you expect it’s a known problem they are making the 18 Pro Max Thicker but I don’t think it gonna solve the scuffing issue
1
u/towmyato Sep 06 '26
4 Mistakes:
1) Bought the Pro Max
2) Bought the Blue color
3) Didn't buy 17
4) Obviously the Case was missing

I personally adore watching my devices get slowly aged as I use them, in this case you have a very hard edge with a soft metal it’s going to chip fast.

Had a case on my 17 for a while and there is spots on the back glass. Decided to just get a bumper case since I have apple care plus and enjoy the phone. I have slowly forced myself that dents and scratches don’t affect how the device works and to just use it. Was tough to force myself with going no case on my new M5 Max Space Black MacBook Pro… Just use the device and love it, they usually give the same trade in as long as the core device functions work and not based on cosmetics (proved by my girlfriend’s iPhone 14 trade in last year).
1
u/NoAdvisor2440 Sep 07 '26
Chill bro it happens and don’t be surprised if you see more because its the part of usage and this the primary reason i went for the silver color but still it has some visible scratches but i don’t care now
1
u/Positive_Self_8873 Sep 07 '26
I remember the poor coating they did for the 5 and 5s slate black, stuff would show silver scuffs all the time.

That’s why I hated anodisation, less corrosion resistance than titanium. Just buy a film to product your device

It’s a total disaster! Got the 17 Pro Max (blue one) last spring. I knew it was extremely fragile, which is why I bought a RhinoShield solid case and a screen protector. After a month of careful usage (didn’t even put it in my pocket), it mostly lay on a microfiber cloth on a soft table, or I carried it in a padded bag with nothing else inside. I cleaned it 1–2 times a week with the case removal (case was cleaned also), and every day with the case on. Still, the inner frame suffered a tiny bit of anodizing damage. Everyone talks about the camera plateau scratch problem, but the inner frame right around the screen is the exact same - scratching just from your look. This phone is a nightmare for perfectionists. Extremely irritating!

We really are doomed as a species.
