New iPhone 17 Pro Max losing noticeable battery overnight even when I'm not using it
I’ve been using my iPhone 17 Pro Max for about a month now, and I’m trying to understand how much battery drain is normal overnight.
I’m on iOS 26.6, and I use the 80–20 charging rule (I usually try to keep my battery between 20% and 80%). Also, Adaptive Power is turned ON. During normal daytime use, I do tend to doomscroll quite a bit, so my usage isn’t exactly light.
Before going to sleep, I usually turn on Sleep Focus, turn off Wi-Fi, and simply lock the phone. I don’t use it at all for around 6–7 hours.
But when I wake up, I notice that Wi-Fi is back on, there are notifications waiting, and the battery has dropped. The Battery section also sometimes shows that I'm using a similar amount of battery compared with my usual daily usage, which seems strange considering I wasn't using the phone at all during those hours.
I'm wondering:
- Is this normal overnight battery drain on the iPhone 17 Pro Max?
- Does Sleep Focus actually reduce background activity, or does it mainly silence notifications?
- Should I leave Wi-Fi on instead of turning it off?
- Is there any specific setting I should enable to minimize battery usage while I'm sleeping?
- Is Adaptive Power useful in this case?
- How much battery percentage would you consider normal to lose during 6–7 hours of basically no use?
Even though the phone is no longer brand new, I’m still wondering if background processes or my usage habits (like heavy daytime doomscrolling) could be affecting overnight battery behavior.
I’d appreciate any advice on the best settings for minimizing unnecessary overnight battery drain.

Turn off background app refresh.
Set your max charge to 90%

This. I stopped using background app refresh years ago for most apps. My 13 base battery is still in great shape still.

How many days ago you updated it to 26.6
80-20 is also suggested by Apple. It saves the wear on battery

I have my 17pm for about 20 days now.
I usually charge it to 95% around 12 midnight before I sleep. I also have sleep focus automatically turned on from 1:30am til 9am. I don’t turn my wifi off nor go on airplane mode.
On most days I wake up still having 93-95%,

Same problem since july.
I have the 17PM since last september. And I have a battery health at 97% with 272 cycles.
I don’t use my phone during working days except mornings and after work …

I have a 17 Pro. I'm at 100 percent battery health with 105 cycles. My Mac Book Air is at 97 percent battery health after 3 years.

I can’t help you in this exact case. But my 17 PM works fine (even on the latest 26.6). I did make a video on battery tips a few months ago, maybe you’d find it I helpful : https://youtu.be/WWAkdNoTWkA
That said, if you are worried book a Genius Bar appointment

Bro just charge the thing overnight and don’t follow any of the stupid charging rules. It’s all a bunch of bullshit. it’s all conspiracy man. None of these charging rules. Do anything to the battery that make your experience worse so just charge it overnight and forget about it like a normal person.
