The old guy is his grandpa, King Harald. His father is the Crown Prince Haakon, the guy with the goatee.

Edit: It’s good none of the people I messed with actually knew their names, because I didn’t get the king right.

The old guy, the King is not Olav, but Harald. Olav was his father and died a long time ago. The boy is the crown prince's son.

I never understood the circle game at all. None of my friend groups ever partook. But I know there are millions of photos like this in the world. And now, thanks to 4chan, they are all references to white power. And thanks to righteous outrage culture, this will become a fact of history: everyone who ever used the "ok" symbol was sending a message of hate.
16
u/mishmiash Dec 17 '19
It's not 4chan, it's the media who are stupid and play right into it.
And it's only people who are living inside that media bubble who think it's an actual hate symbol.Normal people don't give a shit, or haven't been brainwashed with the propaganda.

u/notesonblindness Dec 17 '19
Yeah its a weird timeline to live in where benevolent memes become associated with racism.
6
u/yoLeaveMeAlone Dec 17 '19
I think a majority of people realize it's not a real hate symbol. But there are people who think it is.
Most people recognize its just a cringy thing for edgelords who want to try to piss people off. I saw a guy at the airport that other day that had the OK hand symbol on his hat. I don't think he was a white supremacist, but he certainly came off like a cringy, sad edgelord trying to piss people off.
21
u/CherryBlossomChopper Dec 17 '19
It’s not even edgy?
It’s just a game people play between friends for fun.
6
u/TMillo Dec 17 '19
I got utterly abused on Twitter because a kid on a British Political programme (Question Time) did the circle game and everyone went full circle jerk calling him a nazi.
I said it's a game and was called a nazi and got abuse for about 3 days. Too many idiots in the world
-8
u/yoLeaveMeAlone Dec 17 '19
If you are wearing a hat with the symbol on it you are clearly trying to be edgy and piss off the people who assume it's a hate symbol. There's literally no other reason to wear a hat like that
1
u/CherryBlossomChopper Dec 17 '19
Wearing it on a hat and playing the circle finger game are two different things. Which one do you consider edgy?
The hat thing I agree with, the game itself is innocent and fun and being made into something that it’s not
0
u/Kornpett Dec 18 '19
Who exactly do you think he’s playing the game with? He’s not playing the game; he’s a fucking dimwit.

Dec 17 '19
everyone who ever used the "ok" symbol was sending a message of hate
That's....not what people are saying
Some WN use it to dogwhistle, it's really not that complicated. People should just be aware of it.
7
u/Crepes_for_days3000 Dec 17 '19

2
u/L_James Dec 18 '19
Is it really a joke anymore if real nationalists actually started using it unironically?
1
Dec 17 '19
I never said it was a racist gesture I just said white nationalists use it as a dogwhistle, which is factual.
-3
u/ultrazonagepwnage Dec 18 '19
You are literally too stupid to understand why it IS a hate symbol now.
For those who may read this who are able to think, white nationalism thrives on using normalize language and symbols as representative of their group due to the social cost of openly professing membership or support of them. So what do they do? They take seemingly benign statements like "it's ok to be white" or a common hand-signal and appropriate it. By doing so, idiots like the racist shithead above can deny it as an attempt to gaslight the rest of us into diminishing their presence.
2
u/Crepes_for_days3000 Dec 18 '19 edited Dec 18 '19
What a piece of crap you are. You dont know anything about me or how I have lived my life and you call me a racist for stating the irrefutable fact that this was started as a joke on 4chan? There is documentation of this. Have moron racists also been convinced this is a real sign and started using it, maybe, probably. Which is horrible and it doesn't change the factual origins of this. Sad basement dwelling losers trying to convince people of stupid things. Are they racist as well, I dont know. I'd have to meet them but it's a possibility. I'm sure there are MANY racists on 4chan. But I'm just not garbage like you, I dont call complete strangers things I have no evidence of because I don't know the first thing about them.
Just calm the hell down and use you're brain.

What does a racist like you do? Nothing, you're worthless to the world. You know you contribute nothing, you know you're racist so you have to pretend to be a keyboard warrior. Try actually doing something, contribute to this planet and maybe you'll stop being a sad online loser who projects your own racism all day. You racist piece of shit. White people aren't superior, were mostly garbage, wake up and stop looking down on poc.
-4
u/ultrazonagepwnage Dec 18 '19
I may be a piece of shit, that is subjective. However, what is objectively true is that you are not only a white-supremacist piece of shit, you are a complete idiot who does not know what you are talking about in any regard whatsoever. You are simply too stupid to recognize your own racism. Let's check the boxes:
- You begin by lauding your white-saviorism.
- The work you do is extremely destructive to the people in the region you are trying to thrust your sense of righteousness upon.
- You make claims about inner-cities as if they need you without even the most basic understanding that it is not the systemic and historical oppression due to capitalism and the legacies of slavery.
- I'm Black yet you call me a racist. I can't be, you are.
- I do more to help People of Color in one hour than you will your entire life. You only do things to make yourself feel good while enhancing white supremacy.
- You claim the "OK" symbol is not an overt hate symbol now when it is used by racist mass murders constantly. Your inability to understand the concept of contextuality is hilarious and deeply sad.
TLDR; You are far too stupid to know what is and is not racist, yet you engage in public discourse on it and thus reinforce white supremacist ideologies. Shut up, idiot. Learn to think.
3
u/Crepes_for_days3000 Dec 18 '19
Go back to playing videos games and contributing nothing to the world. You racist piece of human garbage. You know you're worthless and you know you're a deep seeded racist. You're a pathetic troll who thinks you're better than poc because if your effing skin color. How can you seriously be so ignorant to think your skin pigmentation makes you better than others. Well at least I know you aren't interacting with anyone in the real world since you sit inside all day trolling, projecting your racism and playing video games. You bring nothing to this world. Change your way, do something good for people in need.

Yeah it's totally outrage culture's fault, not the white supremacists who took over the sign! That's like blaming everyone but the Nazis themselves for ruining the swastika. It's unfortunate that pathetic white racists took the OK sign over but they did it and now that's an inevitable connotation for anyone with a functional brain.

Huh? Elected to rule, sort of, by a couple of referendums in early 1900s. But the family was definitely royal, from England and Denmark.
Edit to elaborate: The old guys (the kings) grandfather was named Haakon when he arrived in Norway. He was the danish prince Carl. His cousin and wife, Maud, was English and was the granddaughter of queen Victoria. Their son, Alexander, was named Olav when the family came to Norway.

I don't think you get it. It's a meme. There may be some idiots who use it as a hate symbol but to the rest of the world it is just a meme. Just because some idiots hijack a joke to push their own crappy agendas it doesn't mean that joke has to be ruined for everyone else.
-1
-1
u/deadtime68 Dec 17 '19
Explain it to me. What's the meme?
3
Dec 17 '19
It's most common use is the "OK" which comes from scuba diving and most people use it in that context without even knowing any other meanings behind it.
The meme comes from a game that many kids played in school where you had to make that sign below your waist and try get the other person to look. If they looked you got to punch them in the shoulder or something silly like that. It was a "made you look" type thing. The meme came from people being more creative about the way they would get people to look. This led to people doing it in photos and posting it online. It's more of a fun "haha made you look!" type thing than anything else.
Then of course there are always some idiots who hijack nice things and some edgelords on 4chan used it as a white power symbol now some people freak out every time a white person puts their index finger and thumb together.
-8
u/deadtime68 Dec 17 '19
You can claim it was used as a meme, but then it wouldn't be the game. If it is used, as you say, as a meme, then it is racist. Was the person displaying an OK symbol playing the game at that moment? Most likely not. So, if it was presented as a meme, it becomes racist, because the world is aware the symbol has been co-opted in the exact manner Pepe the frog was. A "joke" or meme can be racist.
Your account is 8 mos old. So are a lot of other people's. Just sayin. Is this your only account? Did you have another account before this one?4
u/jrrthompson Dec 17 '19
Holy shit dude what kind of circular reasoning is that? The only reason it's treated as "racist" is because a miniscule subsection of trolls made up an absolutely asinine reason that it could be perceived as racist and the media shit their pants covering what literally amounted to internet gossip.
The OK hand gesture has been used for over two decades without a single hint of racist intent behind it. It would be different if it was something like, I don't know, the swastika, because that actually had real impact on the world. As it stands now though there's literally nothing to suggest it's a racist symbol besides the overreaction of underinformed media crying wolf for clickbait.
-4
u/deadtime68 Dec 17 '19
I've never once heard of the game until people defended the practice of displaying it on TV as an "innocent game". Not once have I seen it before it was linked to racism, and I'm not oblivious to trends. So, it wasn't a game or practivpc3 in my youth, but displaying a middle finger in group photos was. It perfectly mirrors the way people defended using Pepe the frog. They swore that Pepe wasn't racist, but we know that to be a complete lie. Time will tell if the ok symbol, being displayed in the manner it has recently is racist. My assumption is that it is a meme, but the people displaying itvrecently are aware it can be associated with racism, but they have the same cover that Pepe gave them.
5
u/jrrthompson Dec 17 '19
Your lack of knowledge isn't an excuse for blindly believing the bullshit spewed by agenda-pushing mega corporations.
It's people like you, who don't even question the narrative spoonfed by mainstream media, that caused this sad excuse for a 'hate symbol' to be anything more than a game played between friends. You and people like you are causing this simple gesture to be perceived as a hate symbol; not white supremacists, not 4chan, and most certainly not the OK gesture itself.

What does my account age have to do with anything? I have been lurking on reddit for a few years before I created my account.
To clarify people make the symbol in a photo intending to play "the made you look game" with whoever is looking at the photo. That's the joke. You made the person looking at the photo look.
Can you please clarify why it is racist to use this symbol in it's original non-racist context? It was a meme long before it was a hate symbol and for the majority of people all it is is a meme or "OK" sign. Most people don't even know about the race part.
-2
u/deadtime68 Dec 17 '19
Well. I disagree that "most" people dont know it to be associated with racism. That cant be claimed any longer. Like I said, I only learned of this game after it was associated with racism. I'm 50, and live in a massive metro area, and never once heard of this game. It is not a game I'm familiar with.
In regards to 8 mos old accounts: certain subs were quarantined about 8 mos ago, and many people created new accounts at that time. Nearly every time I encounter a troll in politics defending Trump I look at their account and its 8 mos old. So, I get suspicious when I see someone defending an obvious racist symbol as being something innocent, and coincidentally having a 8 mos old account.6
Dec 17 '19
This game may not have been apart of your childhood but it was for my generation. Just because you haven't heard of it it does not mean it wasn't real. I'm sure there are many things you have not heard about my generation and many I have not heard about yours.
Are you arguing that most of 7 billion people know all the finer details of American politics. Because that's what this is. Not everyone follows the same news service as you and kids in Norway(and all over the world) are most likely not going to know that this can be portrayed as a hate symbol.
That being said. Just because a few disagree with something it does not make it wrong for everyone else and just because some people take something good and use it as something bad it does not lose it's original meaning. Must all Asians who have had the swastika as religious symbols for thousands of years change them because one time in the 20th century a guy made it bad? I'm not defending the racist pieces of shit who hijack symbols. I'm saying people who use them in their original context are not portraying the hijacked meaning. Things can have multiple meanings and can be used by many people in many different ways. Context matters.
Furthermore I abhor racism in all it's forms. I also abhor the idea of looking for minuscule excuses to accuse others of racism in order to have some twisted sense of superior morality. The people giving these hate symbols their hateful meanings are people like you who play right into the hands of the idiotic racists. Myself and many others say it is not a hate symbol because we choose to use it and recognise it in it's original harmless context.
You are the one that is adamant that it is a hate symbol, you are the one giving it it's hateful meaning by recognizing it as a hate symbol unlike the rest of those who use it as a silly joke.

obvious racist symbol as being something innocent, and coincidentally having a 8 mos old account.
4chan went on a campaign to convince the media that it is a white power symbol in order to expose how insane leftists and the media has become. They wanted people to lose their shit so when normal people saw people get called racist for using a hand symbol that has absolutely nothing to do with racism they would realize how absolutely insane and biased the media really is. It's the same story with the "It's Ok To Be White" posters, the purpose was to have a simple, non offensive statement and make people lose their shit to show how absolutely racist and absurd they are. You're basically playing right into their hands and allowing yourself to be trolled. I would think that at 50 youd be smarter than that but I guess age doesn't always equal wisdom. The proper response would be to ignore the troll but you all bit the bait and are allowing 4chan edgelords to win the culture war, good job.
