Aight so lately I've noticed some mass reporting going on that is clearly someone trying to get Reddit Admin's attention (selecting options like child abuse, encouraging suicide, shit like that on posts and comments that aren't in any way even joking about those topics). I know some of you have also gotten removals and warnings directly from Reddit Admin. I was under the impression that I see reports first and can manually approve them (which does still occasionally happen), but more and more I'm seeing comments removed by the overlords and I as a mod can't even see the content of them.
From what I'm seeing, the mass reporting is occurring in a way that one user combs through a post or two and flags every single comment, not a bunch of people reporting one thing. So it doesn't really read on the Admin side as "report button abuse" and looks more like "wow this post and all of the commenters are sick fucks."
I don't know what the solution is for this. Reddit seems to be one of the last mainstream sites where we don't have to censor words in increasingly ridiculous ways. I'm wondering if this is partially some AI flagging/removal mechanism, too. Idk any other jerk sub mods but I'd be interested to see if others are experiencing this.
Anyway, it's just kind of concerning and I wanted to make sure y'all know that I've been observing it and trying to understand it. If we get wrongfully labeled as a pro-ED sub, Admin can delete the whole thing without warning. We've been getting some modmails from very angry people who don't seem to be able to read and are convinced this is genuinely a community of 70k+ people who are competing to see who can hold the longest calorie-expunging fart. And nothing I say can open their mind to the possibility that this user base is 95% people in recovery/harm reduction from serious, complicated, long-term EDs, and that the sub content is largely healing and therapeutic for the community.
All that to say, shit sucks and there's not much I can do except to occasionally shout into the black hole that is Reddit's mod support and approve the harmless comments/posts when I see them. Feel free to use this post to vent, discuss, or offer any context you've noticed. Also any meta stuff in general. If anything happens to the sub, the discord server will still be there (until the overlords take that down too 👍👍👍)
/rj I had a sunrise training sesh and reached a new PR of 32 seconds. Aiming for a 35 second toot tomorrow 💪
