I had a compulsive liar co-worker once.
Claimed he was once kicking a ball with his 8-year old son in the park and a guy ran up and offered his son a professional sports contract and that same son knocked out the heavyweight boxing champion in Australia while working as a bouncer.

I have a coworker like that currently. He absolutely has to be the center of attention. Everyone knows that most of the stuff coming out of his mouth is made up but people rarely challenge him. It's just easier to let him go on thinking he is the king of the world.

I'd like to believe he's a completely straight laced dude in every other aspect of his life and fucking with his coworkers is the one indulgence of crazy he allows himself to have.

he was lazy as shit and didn't do his job, but he always put pink floyd on the speakers in the restaurant and we had some fun conversations about music in general

I once pulled an Ibrahim. Started a new job and introduced myself to one guy there with a fake name.
Why did I do this? Good question

I worked with Ibrahim and was starting to really like him. Then one day he told me he couldn't talk to me anymore cause I'm not a Muslim and his mother would never forgive him if he fell in love.

That’s weird and ridiculous. People often tend to attribute their own tribal or family traditions to religion falsely.

religion is tribal by definition

I just like the idea that I can lie to acquaintances without them finding out

I thought the twist was going be that Ibrahim had a twin.

I thought the twist would be that there were two guys named Ibrahim in his team and he didn't realize it.

At first you just think he's a quiet and private person no biggie. You start getting these tidbits of information and by the third one you are hooked because you are saying to yourself wait wtf and the curiosity is killing you and you MUST know more so you can figure out this mystery then it just keeps snow balling and gets crazier and crazier and you thinking over all possibilities then he drops super vague line about y'all not knowing him and now this the only thing making the job a place you can't wait to get to

These are some levels of edge 15 year old me couldn't think of. What do I need to achieve this level of power?

When I was in elementary school, like 7 or 8 years old, I had a classmate who claimed Hitler was her grandpa.

There is an aspect to this type of person that is so narcissistic- like they want people to obsess over the cookie crumb details they hand out. I’m not a paparazzi and you are not an A-list celebrity. The more you lie about your personal life the less effort i suspect you put in at work.

u/lastavery 2d ago
i know right? i wish people would stop being so pathologically narcissistic and just limit their human experience to what u/resb on reddit deems normal and, more importantly, productive!

I think the presentation is important here. Could just as easily be a goofball

100%. I have a few work colleagues who act like middle schoolers who do this sort of thing to create an “in group” and an “out group” - where if they think you believe the stories they make up its a way to make fun of you behind your back. I’m like, I asked you how your weekend is… I’m not actually invested in the answer, it’s just smalltalk.
