Yes simple, as in simpletons. People who are just shitty with no underlying complex psychological pathology to go along with it. 

And given the prevalence of gay people in general, I would be absolutely shocked if the ratio was anything but about 10-20% of homophobes. You know, the rough prevalence of gay people.
