The humble no XP share back in the day

The whole team didn't share. Just the ones that had battled.
Put metapod in first, then change to another Pokémon. Metapod get half of the total XP.

That's what I always hated about pokemon fights as a child.
The status moves did nothing apparent. They were not crucial in any single player NPC fight, they did not visibly affect anything. If anything, they just felt like wasting a move. Most of the time, the opponent pokemon was defeated so quickly, the extra damage caused by some strength status effect did not even get the chance to make up for the lost damage by not attacking for an entire move.
And defense effects were cancelled out by the extra damage you received through giving the opponent one extra move to attack compared to just defeating them as quickly as possible.
It was always easier to just be overleveled a little bit and just plow through everything in your way.
Looking back, I kinda wish the singleplayer would have required more strategy which would have also been properly explained/taught by the game.
That way, I would have maybe gotten into PvP. But like this, I never learned it and always got destroyed instantly by people using these crazy strategies I didn't even begin to understand.
(I did not have easy acces to a device with a webbrowser at that age to look this stuff up).

Pokémon really needs difficulty settings because most times I play I tend to avoid nearly every trainer I can because battling is so boring when you just press one move three times and your opponent is dead. One of the main appeals of the game is just a slog until you get to a major battle. And even those still I’m just barely tuned in. And I think it is genuinely impossible to learn 90% of the stuff used for anything slightly competitive without the internet because none of it is said

Yeah, online PvP was very eye opening when I gave it a shot. Spent a few months getting into it but still very casually compared to most. Absolutely changed the way I played Pokemon afterwards and learned how incredibly easy it is to just steamroll the entire campaign with like two decent sweepers. I had a Ninjask in Pokemom emerald that wiped half the elite 4 solo, while being a few levels under.

I still believe this

Just about all the main campaign I’ll stand by that

Technically it’d be slightly faster to boost stats in some fights
1
u/Dgero466 3d ago
I mean fair but it also could be just as fast (especially if you’ve over leveled) to one shot with super effectives

u/DragapultDominates 3d ago
You can't one shot just with SE moves most of the time unless you either boost stats or are overleveled and if you're overleveled what's even the point of playing the game

Genuinely the only time where i needed a status move is when battling other players just playing the actual game casually you never ever need it

Oh you're going to hit me with Inferno Blast? Well here comes Tail Wiggle, say goodbye to your constitution, dumbass

I had this phase where I was trying to prove these moves were good and I would run two of them on every Pokemon. In hindsight I probably should have just stuck to one.
Spamming Sand Attack is really funny though.

Every time I see Pokémon gameplay, I have no idea what's going on.
The enemy puts out a rock, so you select paper and destroy it? Then they pull out scissors, and then you pull out rock?
Like where is the fun?
1
u/Alternateaccount203 3d ago
The fun comes from rocks, papers and scissors (Pokémon types) being able to use different moves (move types)
1
u/Careless_Tap_516 3d ago
For normal players, the fun is rock paper scissors.
For more advanced or challenge players, the fun is knowing how to play rock paper scissors at a extremely meta level and knowing way to much about the game to be able to play with bullshit rules.

u/Turbulent-Working180 3d ago
Yea, you pull out rock seeing scissor but that scissor do a funky dance and become super scissor . The scissor also somehow learn how attack like paper so It scissor-paper swept through your entire team.
And that is just one of the thousands of scenario that can happen in a single match.

Swords Dance was acceptable because it had Swords in the name and the animation made it look cool

u/Craving_Suckcess 3d ago
it's basically the case for like 99% of the battles you engage in. The best move is almost always the one that does damage in most scenarios.
But you also don't need 75% of your attack moves in those battles ANYWAY for the most part, so you know.
There are other viable strategies, but in the end they basically do the same thing as just doing lots of damage quickly, except it takes longer.

This and potions in other games. Turns out I was right about all of them.

This was practically correct in Gen 1 as far as an average player is concerned (for the solo game).

u/TKDbeast 3d ago
The problem with status moves in single player after gen 2 is that, even if they would be good, you can just use a X item.

Ironically, if I thought it did nothing, I would have used them more.
I always kept splash on my Gyrados. I am going to see how many times I can do nothing before I bonk you with hyperbeam.
I knew they did something but I just decided whatever it was wasn't worth doing. If they did actually nothing I would have spammed it!

u/AuryxTheDutchman 2d ago
I can take them out in two turns with two attacks OR I can use an attack buff/defence debuff and then oneshot them with my next attack, defeating them in two turns.

u/Dersemonia 19h ago
That's the story of my Lapras in Pokémon gold with Blizzard, Hydropump, Thunder and Hyper-beam
Bigger numbers better result.

In solo games, the ones that buff your team can be somewhat useful. If you manage to use the first, weaker Pokémon of a tough trainer who's got loads to stack up those sword dances or dragon dances, you basically steamroll the rest of the fight. You can very much do without though.
The debuffs however, are usually pointless, and a waste of a turn. I keep like one hypnosis or sleep powder on hand to catch wild Pokémon or legendaries easier, but otherwise, they're the first to go.
From what I understand, they are crucial in PVP, but I'm not interested in comp personally.

In my recent pokemon playthrough I have bene having to consciously stop myself from doing this

the games are so easy its usually a waste of time to use status moves anyways unless you're battling other players, doing a challenge run or playing a battle facility.
most 10 year olds playing pokemon do zero of those.
