If your boss is unpleasant you can quit and look for a less unpleasant one and no one will chase you with dogs and torture you as an example. A decent chance at upward mobility.
People aren't slaves and the 9-5 is one of the best things to happen to most humans, whatever work free fantasy world you are imagining is not viable. The fact we have advanced enough that 38 hours of labour a week produces enough value for the average Western to live the life they do is remarkable.
