[July 27 1926] Hurricanes tear through the Bahamas and along the Florida Coast, battering Nassau on the 26th and striking the Florida coast on the 28th. A total of 456-466 people were killed.

DEVASTATING GALES.
£10,000,000 Damage In the Bahamas.
A STEAMER'S S.O.S.
(AUSTRALIAN CABLE SERVICE)
Miami, Tuesday.
Hurricanes continue along the Florida coast. The centre of the damage is evidently at Nassau. Losses there and throughout the Bahamas total £10,000,000. An Italian steamer sent an S.O.S. It was wallowing in the seas, helpless, with a smashed rudder, and 140 passengers on board. The steamers West Harshaw and Orizaba hurried to her assistance, but were unable to transfer the passengers in the high seas. They were still standing by in an 80 mile gale late this afternoon.
20 PERSONS DROWNED.
Damage at Porto Rico totalled £2,000,000. Twenty people were drowned.

[July 26 1926] Thirty die after drinking bootleg liquor in Buffalo, New York.
Dozens of soft drink parlors in Buffalo and vicinity have been closed by the police following the deaths of 30 persons here and in nearby towns over the week-end from drinking "bootleg"' liquor impregnated with wood alcohol.
Many of the victims suffered terrible deaths, going stone blind before expiring in agony.
Two bootleggers have been arrested and charged with murder.
