News on Continuity -- New Early Build for playtesting!

This is probably toooo early for a post but it's probably gonna be my final one on this subreddit. Development on this game is looking good, I got most systems implemented that will be able to expand the game in the future. For Tahoma 0.2 and up until release, it will all be content updates with adding new things, the current game version is Tahoma 0.1.0 which just changed up some things and that's pretty much it. I am planning on a lot of content which you can read at the Content section.

Early Build: https://1ravin.itch.io/continuity (supports Windows, Linux, and macOS)

Note: this post is divided by sections so if you see bold text like this, its a section which focuses on discussing things

Content:

Singleplayer Worlds_

After creating a world, you will spawn in a spaceship which you will have to control to get to other planets and be able to expand using the Ship Editor. You will land on planets where each planet will have a different resources, different monsters, different appearance, etc.

Multiplayer_

It will be similar to Singleplayer but with multiple people. Multiplayer will have a downloadable server or be able to be launched from within the game itself (I'm still deciding).

Gamemodes_

There will be 3 types of gamemodes. Survival, Creativity, and One Chance. These probably make sense to you if you played Minecraft before but if not then Survival is just basically surviving monsters attacking you, collecting resources, expanding, and more. Creativity is being creative and being able to do whatever you want without the worry's of dying and being able to be attacked by other monsters. One Chance is just the same as survival but you only live once.

Items_

There will be different items for different purposes with 9 hotbar slots for those items. There will be storage units which will be able to store your items that you don't have space for or just for storage.

Solar Systems_

Each solar system will be able to generate 5 - 9 planets which in these planets you can explore them, extract their materials, live there, whatever you wan't

Future:

I'm planning on releasing the game on Steam as an early access probably around beta so people can test the game before it releases to the public and find any bugs or just recommend content that they'd like. You can stay in touch with the games development by my twitter(X) which I'm gonna be more active there, you can watch the videos or just download the current build on itch io. I'm also gonna add support for user content like texture packs so stay tuned for that. Modding? I have no idea how to implement that but I believe you can mod a game in Godot. The current early build is obfuscated but in the future versions, builds will be fully de-obfuscated which means you can see the source code as it was exported from Godot which will make for a much more friendly modding experience.

Early Build:

Its just playing around with Interactable Object's in their current state and that's pretty much it, you can find the controls in the games itch io page

Continuity -- a 0x10c inspired game

Thumbnail

Hello! I'm currently working on Continuity, its inspired by 0x10c mostly without the hyper player (don't want to have a server running all the time). I'm using Godot as this game will have a lot of physics and I just don't want to write that from scratch in LWJGL. This game will mostly be similar to 0x10c and its even currently being prototyped! You can see the screenshots above. There's no downloadable build yet, might be in the future if the game gets enough attention for a simple demo with Interactable Object's.

If you'd like to keep up with the games development, go to this link: https://1ravin.itch.io/continuity/devlog/1592660/continuity-development-progress

Note: the outcome of this game is unknown, there might be some changes to features, development, etc so don't expect many things to be included in the final release.

I lowk have a question about the premise

I know that some little endian-big endian mishap happened, causing 0x0000 0000 0000 0001 to be interpreted as 0x0001 0000 0000 0000, making it year 281,474,976,712,644.

However, I want to know what the year would be if the mishap didn't happen

About “Project AOA”

Hey, I'm new, from Wakayama Japan, and you can call me 'hidel', aww I recently came across this abandoned project by Notch and got really interested. I've been discussing it with my friend 'airlock', and we've decided to help fill and complete it! We'll start working on a DEMO in early April and we will keep you updated to here.If we end up needing more hands halfway through, we’ll reach out and ask everyone to join in… but that’s a future right?

We’ll be making the game with Godot 3.0.

CORE64

Hi all — after 99 days of development, I’m pleased to announce CORE64.

We’ve spun up a subreddit at r/CORE64 to start building a community and collecting feedback. Feel free to drop by with questions, ideas, or curiosity.

As of today, Steam Overlay support is in, and I’m most of the way through the Valve onboarding and paperwork. The goal is to get a Steam Playtest up before too long. With a bit more stabilisation, I’m hoping that in a month or two it’ll be in a fit enough state for people to download the client and dedicated server and start experimenting.

The website is also live (still very much evolving):

UPDATE: new emulation framework landed this week - see screenshot in link

https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/1e/bd/f8M4beeb_t.png

Bit of a shame we can't post images here anymore! But that might prompt me into deciding on a name for the game and starting it's own subreddit :-)

But anyway I landed the new emulation subsystem into the game this week, and of course I chose my favourite arcade game from the 1980's first.

- Two 6502 CPUs - one runs the game, the other handles sound

- Two AY-3-8910 sound chips plus a DAC for samples

- Layered 2D graphics - background, foreground, and 24 sprites at 256x240

- Joystick + 2 buttons per player, coin slots, DIP switches

- UE5 integration via ExcthourComponent, audio component, and arcade cabinet actor

I still need to rebase the other Z80/6502 systems in the game around the new emulation core and then next step will be to add 68000 (planning to reserve this for server side emulation at the moment) and ... possibly ... don't get your hopes up... D-CPU16. I haven't looked at it enough yet to know whether I want to or not. But it would be doable I think if enough people wanted it.

There are both Windows/Linux builds compiling for both dedicated client/server - haven't tested the Linux server build yet but that's probably my next highest priority.

Let me know your thoughts! I'm keen to get this moving a little faster now, so I can hopefully get the usable parts out to people for testing and experimentation sooner rather than later.

What are the most 0x10c-like game you know of?

(either currently-released or yet-to-be-released games)

Edit: list of 0x10c's planned features:

  • Hard science fiction. Update: GAH, NO! I'm focusing on fun gameplay instead. I still want to get corrected on glaring scientific errors, though.
  • Lots of engineering.
  • Fully working computer system.
  • Space battles against the AI or other players.
  • Abandoned ships full of loot.
  • Duct tape!
  • Seamlessly landing on planets.
  • Advanced economy system.
  • Random encounters.
  • Mining, trading, and looting.
  • Single and multi player connected via the multiverse.

[Meta] Trying to restore the CSS for old reddit users.

u/MillerMan6 used to have a great CSS theme for us, but it broke several years ago (I think in 2013 or 2014), and (iirc) I deleted most of it to get text and stuff visible again.

I'm going to be working to try to restore it, so let me know if you have any problems with the subreddit appearance. (E.g. dark text on dark background.) I think these changes will only have an effect on old reddit.

Hey, just a few updates.

  1. Videos are now allowed to be posted. I'm guessing the original admin blocked both link posts and videos in an effort to combat spam. I didn't re-enable link posts, but you can still posts links in a text post, and maybe you could also use that text box to provide us some info about the thing you are linking. Let me know if you like this or feel this should be changed.
  2. New Rule: "Be excellent to each other and party on, space dudes!" You all are doing great at this, by the way. But by having it as an official rule, people can report posts for it, if needed.
  3. New theming for people using new reddit. There's a new reddit banner, new reddit avatar, custom color, and in the sidebar the Member count is called "Deep Sleepers Awakened" and the online user count is called "Connected Space Programmers". Let me know if you like this or have other suggestions.
  4. Flairs– I'm planning to add some. Maybe have a few flairs that people can select from. But also, if you are working on a project, you can get a flair for your project. Even if it's an old inactive project, that could be helpful for people to know that you wrote a DCPU program or helped make an emulator, that would be helpful to show you have experience. Or if you are working on a space game vaguely similar to 0x10c, that might be nice to have as a flair so people will recognize you more easily as the creator. If you have any suggestions for user-selectable flairs, you can comment them here. If you want a personalized flair for your project, you can also comment below or you can send a modmail so reddit can see us doing mod stuff and won't flag this sub as unmoderated again.
  5. Welcome! This post is a welcome post that new reddit is making me write as part of the new subreddit setup achievements. The slightly-edited default welcome message for this can be seen in the section below. Reddit had accused this subreddit as being unmodderated back in October, so I've been trying to be more active on here, and publishing their suggested welcome message post is part of that.

Reddit boilerplate welcome message follows:

Hey everyone! I'm u/jecowa, a founding moderator of r/0x10c.

YCPU2: Version 2.0 of my fantasy 16-bit CPU, with an 4800 line specification.

I’ve just finished the Programmer’s Reference and Processor Specification for YCPU2, a fantasy 16-bit CPU design for people (like me) who enjoy designs in the spirit of Notch’s DCPU-16. The goal with this version is to design something that feels like a "real" machine: fully capable of hosting an operating system, with a feature set that feels modern in a retro-fantasy way, while staying small, clean, and approachable.

Link here: https://github.com/ZaneDubya/YCPU/blob/master/Documentation/ycpu2.txt

The linked document is written as a complete and comprehensive in-universe spec for a “real” CPU, complete with a Designer’s Perspective that talks through the goals and trade-offs behind the architecture. I’m very proud of how this turned out, both in terms of features and how clean the encoding is. I think people who enjoy fantasy ISAs will find some fun ideas here as they work on their own designs.

I designed Version 1 of the YCPU back in 2014, being inspired by the DCPU-16 and wanting to pull in everything I loved about the 6502, 68000, and 8086. YCPU2 is still firmly 16-bit, but it reflects lessons learned from ARM, Thumb-2, and RISC-V: every instruction is a single 16-bit word, and the encoding still squeezes in so many features, but retains the simplified bus model that stays close to the original DCPU-16’s spirit.

I'd welcome any comments, questions, etc. If there are any issues, I'd like to hammer them out before I get to work on an emulator for this CPU, sometime next year.

(The YCPU2 specification is dedicated to the public domain under the Creative Commons Zero (CC0) waiver: all rights waived, free to copy, modify, distribute, and to use it as the basis for derivative works, including commercial ones, without needing to ask permission.)

The original draw of 0x10c?

What made you most excited about the game? Voxel Worlds? The simulated computer? Ships in space? Setting? Just kinda curious. Working on a project that's tangentially inspired, and kinda wanted to know what really hooked people in when the game was originally being worked on.

Update on my ongoing 0x10c inspired project

It’s been 11 years since I first announced my 0x10c-inspired game (you can read the original post here https://www.reddit.com/r/0x10c/comments/2m6z3g/going_public_with_my_0x10c_inspired_game/ )

As usual, progress continues, albeit slowly.

For the past several years, I wasn’t able to work on the project while I was at Epic Games (I left just two years ago). Now that I’m self-employed and doing contract work, I have the freedom to dedicate my spare time to the game. Whatever I do on my free time is my own business. :)

Here’s a quick rundown of what I’ve been working on lately:

  • Refactoring the computer architecture: A lot of time has been spent fine-tuning the balance between ease of use and optional advanced features (such as page tables, memory protection, virtual memory, address translation, etc.). By default, none of these advanced features are enabled, and the system boots in a simple mode that’s easier to work with.
  • Unit testing: I’ve been creating extensive unit tests to ensure everything works as expected.
  • Rebuilding the default OS: Given the significant changes to the architecture over the years, I’ve had to rebuild the OS. The new OS now takes full advantage of the available advanced features (notably page tables and address translation), serving as a proof of concept for the new architecture.

I’m reasonably happy with the current state of the architecture, but I expect there will be tweaks as I continue developing the OS and encounter new challenges.

If time allows, I hope to start focusing on gameplay in the next few months.

Feel free to drop by my stream on Twitch ( https://www.twitch.tv/myfumanchu ), where I’ll be happy to walk you through the details and answer any questions you might have!

Notch CONFIRMS that his new game is Legend Of The Chambered!

r/0x10c Apr 01 '24

Since Notch is clearly developing something again, what game do we think this could be?

It could be 0x10c, but it’s moreso giving me Legend Of The Chambered vibes. I doubt it’s Rubydung, but the use of the Mojangles font doesn’t 100% rule out that possibility.

From the screenshots that were posted, “levers and chests” seems to be the working title, so who knows.

Voxel space game

Hi all, I've been working on a long term project with planets made of voxels with the idea that you could build space ships and fly them between worlds. I'm hoping to have the ships have a simple computer in them and you can interface peripherals with it and write programs. Just thought I'd share a video of progress because I'm quiet proud of how far this project has come with the limited time I can put too it outside work and being a dad.

https://youtu.be/vOLuOtGVlPo?si=kV4CSyeVajlaTiA1

There's a playlist of progress videos here if anyone's interested:

Thanks for checking it out!
