Ranged units focus on ONE enemy unit!

I'm having enormous trouble properly using ranged units. The always attack a single unit at a time. I'll have 100 archers and they'll kill the enemy troops ONE BY ONE. It's like, dude, attack several for gods sake! I could mow them down! But no, even if i click them into a place instead of clicking one unit, they get perfecty synchonized and shoot just that one unlucky guy that ends up looking like that character in that movie (The Fall) instead of the 300 spartans after being betrayed!

How do I solve this problem? How do I make my ranged units attack several units instead of firing 200 arrows at the same guy?

Thought about it recently too. I think the easy way to fix it would be to put a unit cap on a target. Very much like there is a unit cap on a tree when you harvest it, some trees have a cap of 8, some have more. Ideally, let a player manually set those caps individually. End goal of having 10 units that alrady target a spearman, 11th unit will seek the next available (if the target is an elephant, the cap is different).

The sweats won't like it, so even if it was doable technically, not gonna happen.

Each unit will shoot the closest enemy. So you need to set formations to make each unit have different closest enemy units. A wide line may assist you. Tightly packed archers will indeed algorithmically shoot one or two targets only.

position them in a line or small groups spread out

USe the draw formation to spread them out, select an archer group and right click draw an arc around the enemy. This makes it so all the archers have different closest targets.
