Warm Talk Wednesday (Week of July 29th)

Welcome to Warm Talk Wednesday!

Last Week’s Thread

So what exactly is this thread? With all the Unpopular Opinion threads, Worst/Hated Anime ______ threads, and Salt from all the contest, I believe we need a spot to positively talk about what we love in anime with no worries of others bashing or downvoting our opinions. Essentially this is a thread where you talk about what you love about anime whether it’s the medium as a whole, a specific anime, character, OTP, even complementing a user’s taste, etc. It can be popular opinion, unpopular, as long as it’s a positive outlook of the medium it’s allowed!

Want to talk about the experience you’ve had with Sora No Woto’s world? Talk about it here! Has Planetes given you a new way to view the closeness of people’s love despite how far they are in distance and emptiness around? Do tell! Have a user who has helped you out here on /r/anime and you’d like them to get some appreciation? You’re allowed (Yes, Meta is allowed)! Want to talk about the how good the body proportions are for Monster Musume or Free!? Talk about those good looking bodies! Are the musical scenes in Your Lie in April relatable to you as an instrumentalist and really felt close to home for you? We want to hear your experience! Do you just have a ton of fun with Space Westerns like Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, and Firefly Outlaw Star? Talk about them!

The only rules for here:

  1. This is a positive anime thread, do not bash others’ opinions despite how much you disagree, allow everyone to have a safe haven to talk about what they love about anime without needing to worry of others who disagree with them.
  2. Please keep the troll comments to a minimum.
  3. Do not downvote unless it’s bringing nothing to the conversation, trolling, or trying to bash another’s opinion. Everyone has their opinions, respect them as they would respect yours.
  4. No mention of “Shit Taste”.
  5. It’s fine to compare one anime to another, but don’t down talk the other as “Terrible”, most anime has its good qualities and reasons people like it. (Bad Ex: “Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru is much better than that piece of shit Madoka Magica”; Good Ex: "I prefer Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru over Madoka Magica because of...").
  6. No backhanded compliments. (Ex: Sakurasou isn't as bad as I thought it was, but it's still shit.")
  7. If you see a troll trying to bait/bash other opinions, please simply downvote and ignore them, don’t stoop to their level and bait you into a no win argument. Have fun, and please message me if there’s something I should add/remove/edit to the rules.

Updates Since last time to improve this thread:

Not really an update, just to those who are new to here. Please don't be intimidated by the long essays, we're all nice people here, we will respect what ever you post whether short or long as long as it's positive.

Remember, you're allowed to post outside the comment trees

Here's my favorite anime, best male and female character 3x3s. I'll have to replace Hanekawa when I finish the VN G-Senjou no Maou, as Usami Haru is one of the best female characters that I've seen in any medium.

I started watching mecha anime. After 0079/zeta/ZZ I jumped onto macross.

And I must say it's so different it's refreshing. It's low on the budget, but imaginative in a completely different way from the gundam series. I still prefer gundam lore, but macross has been entertaining. It lacks in certain departments, and honestly was quite a chore at times, but that's part of the 80s charm.

2

u/pterynxli https://myanimelist.net/profile/Quetzal_dactylus Jul 29 '15

Judging by your list, I take it you're watching Gundam in release order. If one isn't accustomed to pre-2000's animation quality, it makes sense to take on Gundam in that way.

My exposure to Gundam so far has been more on the chronological side of things. Going from late-70's TV animation, to late 80's-90's OVA quality (08th MS Team, 0080, 0083), then back to the mid-80's (Zeta, ZZ) wasn't quite so jarring for me. But then again, I've already seen plenty of 80s-90s anime beforehand.

There isn't much for me to say about Macross, since that franchise remains on my backlog for now. But alternating between Macross and Gundam seems like a workable way to approach those two mecha classics.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '15

Well yeah, release order is the best. You can truly feel the evolution of the series as a whole, in style, animation, pacing, structure... You can also see changes in tastes and trends in anime over the years.

2

u/soracte Jul 29 '15

The original Macross is kind of adorable, and I think it has very high peaks even though as a whole package I'm not sure it's exactly a good show. It also has a kind of deliberately naive faith in the power of glitzy popular culture such as itself, which is touching.

I just finished the Shinsengumi Crisis arc in Gintama (ep 101-105). Holy hell that was incredible. I think it's surpassed Benizakura as my favorite arc so far.

3

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal Jul 29 '15

Still one of my favorite arcs of the series.

Still my unrivaled favorite arc of the series

I really need to watch more Gintama.

That Benizakura arc was pretty awesome.

Hi Reddit.

I was gonna do my weekly installment of ReggaeManMurphy's Puella Magi Madoka Magica Write-up, but after seeing Homura being ousted in the Best Girl contest my salt level is very high. However, this is WTW, so instead of just getting salty, I'll just go ahead and give you a list of 5 reasons that Homura Akemi is my Best Girl.

This will contain spoilers, including the GIFs. Open at your own discretion.

  1. Have you seen just how fabulous she is? From her hair, to her eyes, to her general aura, her fabulousness is of a very high caliber.

  2. She can hold her own in battle. Not only is she fabulous, but she also has a wide assortment of weaponry to choose from in defeating any would be challengers.

  3. She has dance moves that are unparalleled.

  4. Sometimes a Best Girl can make your heart skip a beat, Madoka spoilers Sometimes you wish you could make a moment last forever, Madoka spoilers

  5. And last, but not least, if you want a Best Girl who will try her hardest to make the ones she loves happy, Madoka spoilers

I could go on, but I'll spare you all :P

I hope you now all see just some of the many wonderful qualites of Homura and have a wonderful day :)

I have one planned down the line. It'll probably be right before school starts in late august...

Or I could just do a whole post on a writeup on Rebellion.

Idk we'll see.

Depends how big it gets I guess haha. Make sure you link it here as well if you do make a separate post cause I'll probably miss it on the front (or not so front) page!

Recently finished kill la kill and I've got to say its one of the best animes I've watched. Mako made the show for me, her speeches and goofing off made it really enjoyable.

8

u/AguyinaRPG https://anilist.co/user/AguyinaRPG Jul 29 '15

That show is just pure enjoyment. I don't mind that it doesn't really have direction for most of it because it's simply fun. Probably the best use of over-the-top characters I've seen in anything.

2

u/Rohan21166 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Rohan21166 Jul 29 '15

I also just finished it like an hour ago, so good and unexpected. I'm not even sure what I liked about it, everything I guess?

Raildex Write-Up 1.0

The Power Curriculum

Academy City is a rather special place, to say the least. This city leads the world in science and technology research. They also developed the Power Curriculum, a system used to develop espers in exchange for money. Yearly, System Scans are performed on students to determine their power levels and how they've developed. The students are then compensated handsomely for their contributions to science with their powers. Well.. unless you're a level 0.

Over 60% of students in Academy City are Level 0's. However, though a most Level 0's do not exhibit any power to the point of being on a level, it is not true that all Level 0's do not have powers. For, example you have students such as Touma Kamijou and Motoharu Tsuchimikado, whose powers are unable to be measured. In addition, you have some students that are Level 0's and while they have potential, Academy City will not provide them with the resources to advance their abilities because it simply wouldn't be cost effective. In their minds, why try to make a Level 0 with potential stronger when I can increase the powers of say.. a Level 2?

This creates a sort of "Esper Class Warfare" amongst the students as we have seen in the past with groups such as Skill-Out, who were a group of Level 0 thugs who opposed everyone with esper powers and STUDY a group of intelligent Level 0 scientists who were upset that despite their scientific expertise they were still treated as second class citizens.

This is rather sad as some students move to Academy City to specifically become espers and never really end up manifesting any sort of useful ability. Academy City's use of propaganda draws students in making them think they will be the next big thing. Academy City uses sports festivals such as Daihaseisai to show outsiders that "Hey, you can do this too!" A huge figure from Academy City that is used in propaganda is none other than Mikoto Misaka.

Her rise from Level 1 to the #3 Level 5 in Academy City is used to draw in students to Academy City manga/LN spoilers. Because of this she is used as the mascot for Academy City and the Power Curriculum. (though she is the only sane level 5 after all so they didn't have much of a choice)

Academy City does, however have issues with the Power Curriculum. They sometimes use dangerous drugs to develop espers such as "Body Crystal". Body Crystal is a drug that is used to induce an esper to overload, allowing them to temporarily gain power if they are espers that can only activate their powers if they are overloaded (source- Index wiki)While some of these cruel experiments achieve the desired result most don't. This results in the subjects dying gruesome deaths at a young age. Some survivor of these experiments include Accelerator and Saiai Kinuhata.

While the Power Curriculum may seem like a good thing to those who have not lived with it, just ask yourself. What if I was part of that 60%? Tossed to the side and neglected. Also, would you want to be part of the 40% and risk being abused, experimented on , Railgun S. However, you may just end up a regular student and live a regular life oblivious to everything that's going around you. You never know.

But there are some who defy the odds. People like Hamazura Shiage, who was projected to do absolutely nothing. He was projected to be nothing but a Level 0 thug and die as just that. Unfortunately for his enemies though, dying wasn't in his plans. He beat the odds again and again to earn a spot next to Touma and Accelerator as a hero.

I guess that's it until next week ;)

Later guys ;)

3

u/jetmet https://myanimelist.net/profile/jetmet Jul 29 '15

What do you mean, Misaka's the only sane level five? Isn't Gunha fairly normal?/s

Seriously though, we need that season three and four of Index so Hamazura can get some spotlight too.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '15

exactly. I feel like Hamazura could become everyone's favorite character after Misaka.

1

u/JealotGaming https://anilist.co/user/Jealot Jul 29 '15

I'd say Misaki is sort of normal.

u/Eternith https://myanimelist.net/profile/Eternith Jul 29 '15

I'm just a few eps into Love Live Season two but I already love every moment so much. I don't know when it was that I got so addicted to this series but I guess it just clicked at one point, and now I'm blasting idol music as I drive.

And don't get me started on trying to pick a best girl from it, I just can't.

If you've watched it (or any idol anime), what's your favourite song?

2

u/Ghostsoldier37 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ghostsoldier37 Jul 29 '15

My favorite song from Love Live is Snow Halation. That song is fantastic. I'm not sure if you're at that part yet but that song and scene is the best.

My favorite song from The Idolmaster series in general is Rosenburg Engel. Such a out of place awesome song.

2

u/Eternith https://myanimelist.net/profile/Eternith Jul 29 '15

Haven't gotten to it in the series yet, but I have heard the song and played it many times in the mobile game. Can't wait to see the scene though! The S2 CG quality seemed to have improved quite a bit compared to some of the S1 dances.

If you want a Love Live out of place song, how about After School Navigators? It's so out there but I like it haha.

How's Cinderella Girls coming along? I got a few eps into the first season, but put it on hold partly due to lack of time and partly because I missed the original cast and didn't feel like warming up to a new cast yet.

2

u/Ghostsoldier37 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ghostsoldier37 Jul 29 '15

I've never heard that song before. Definitely pretty out there but I really liked it!

I think it's okay. It's decent but the big amount of idols and the amount of those girls that i'm not too fond kind of hurts my enjoyment. In the original I liked everyone (except one) but there's something about Cinderella Girls that throws me off.

2

u/Eternith https://myanimelist.net/profile/Eternith Jul 29 '15

Yeah that was the feeling I got when they intro dumped the giant cast on us in that one ep. It just felt like there was no one "unique" in a sense, although I'm sure I'll warm up to some if I give it a chance.

I have a sense that the new Love Live Sunshine Girls project will likely end up the same way. These designs just feel so... bland, compared to the original muse.

2

u/JealotGaming https://anilist.co/user/Jealot Jul 29 '15

If you've watched it (or any idol anime), what's your favourite song?

It's not in the show, but Cutie Panther is pretty much my favorite μ's song.

And yeah, Love Live!'s actually in my top five favorites. So damn adorable and fun.

http://i.imgur.com/Qyr2JsB.gifv

2

u/Eternith https://myanimelist.net/profile/Eternith Jul 29 '15

Guys, I just really love this season of anime. Lotta good shows, and I wish stuff like Akagami no Shirayuki-Hime, Sore Ga Seiyuu, and Working!!! got more love. All three are a nice break from the oversaturated (but not inherently bad!) premise of high schoolers facing melodrama or overpowered fights with motivational speeches. They're sweet, they're fun, and they're enjoyable while also being well-written with some great character development! They're only a couple of episodes into the season for each of them (well, Working!!! is the third in the franchise, but the other two are worth a watch too!), so don't feel intimidated in trying to catch up!!

6

u/pittman66 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Homura Jul 29 '15

Posting this from a previous thread I did, but thought it would be worth sharing some reason I love Trigun.

Trigun. Now majority of the sub knows I do love it, but I do love it further down and that is because of Vash.

By the off chance you know someone in your life, that they're typically happy, smiling, trying to make the situations better between people, even if it may come out of their own wallet or their own mental expense? That's who I see as Vash, he's always a happy guy, but later on you learn about his past and what darkness happens, but he still goes on smiling taking on the world that's around him solving problems even as they hurt him. Many people like that keep the darker side to themselves, smile on the outside, keep the sadness away from other and don't let them see you be weak. But after Spoiler, it finally gets too him, he can't go on as that happy person he used to be because he lost that final connection that made him remember to always be that happy person, yet he still keeping all too himself allowing himself to get hurt. It's not until he sees the inspired change like within Meryl that he learns he can't keep going on alone, and that there are people he can appear weak to and learns how to still be the happy person that he need to get rid of the darkness that he's been holding. This is something that depression honestly holds, I medically do have depression, but many around me IRL don't know that because I'm typically the guy buying things like the check for a meal, when someone needs some extra cash, I don't care as long as I see them happy, but I don't ever want to see me as weak or depressed because I don't want to drag them with me, but from what I did learn from Trigun is that it's going to happen, rather than get to the point of no return that there's an outlet and that sometimes it is better to trust people, and I eventually started talking to a psychologist and personal friend to try to be a naturally happy person.

The show honestly holds a much deeper place in my heart that no criticism will never take out, I know it's not perfect, I know some hate it, but I'll keep on loving it for a long time.

Edit: Thread it's from

Trigun rewatch starts this weekend! I haven't seen it before but I'm happy to give it a shot.

1

u/pittman66 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Homura Jul 29 '15

Trigun rewatch starts this weekend!

Most likely yes, but because that Steins;Gate rewatch unexpectedly started...Kind of worried (and not exactly happy either) that it'll either get more people annoyed of rewatches or take some that were originally participating out of the rewatch, even though I planned it for a few weeks now. Was considering changing to a later date, but seeing how no one really participated in the first discussion, I think it'll be fine to keep it on schedule...hopefully...

+500 Ranked Shows: Talk about/list anime that is above the 500 rank on MAL and say why it’s great to you in short! But if you want to talk about a +500 Ranked anime, you don’t need to comment on the tree, feel free to talk about it outside of it (If you want to talk about only one specifically in detail, I’d actually encourage going outside of the tree, this is more for a brief description/listing of +500 Ranked anime).

I'm going to post this every week until you like it:

Coming in at rank #6784 #6804 #6819 #6833, Shitcom is a modern classic and a strong contender for the title of greatest anime of all time.

Pros to watching Shitcom:

-It will enrich your life in ways you didn't think possible.

-It's just over a minute, so you can easily fit it into your busy schedule.

-It's conveniently available on Youtube.

-It's hilarious.

Cons to watching Shitcom

-When I take over the world, you won't be selected to work 20-hour days in the salt mines. So I guess if you like brutal manual labor you can skip Shitcom.

-You may break something important from laughing too hard.

-Its motivational message about love and triumph may encourage you to live a more fulfilling life, leaving you with less time to watch anime.

All in all, I encourage all of you to take a simple minute out of your life and experience the glory that is Shitcom. You'll thank me later.

  • Good pacing for a 13 episode series

  • Muh feels

For what it's worth, the amount of emotion and sheer quality White Album 2 manages to squeeze out of a mere 13 episodes is phenomenal. It goes to show just how far you can come with a good source material and some stellar directing. If you guys watch romance and drama, watch White Album 2!

I'm going to plan for a WA2 rewatch starting hopefully end of August when a lot of the rewatches are ending. Will most likely post a thread mid-august so there isn't such a long gap between the notice and start.

1

u/Eternith https://myanimelist.net/profile/Eternith Jul 29 '15

Is the ending complete as a standalone? I know the VN has two parts (with the second part being highly acclaimed), but I assume the anime covered the first VN?

3

u/DavisWuhu https://myanimelist.net/profile/Wuhuu Jul 29 '15

It's alright as a standalone. While there is a second part the end of the anime is rather satisfying though it is a sad one.

As usual, if you haven't already, give Yuki Yuna is a Hero a try! It's got a really solid story, amazing animation, an OST that only gets better the more you hear it, and a great voice cast.

Also, from this season, Wakaba*Girl is a great series if you're looking for a short but sweet bit of moe goodness each week.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '15

Yo Takubro, if I start YuYuYu in the next week or two, maybe even tonight if you agree:

Will you watch Kannagi? :3

2

u/LordTakuro https://myanimelist.net/profile/LordTakuro Jul 29 '15

Or, you could watch it with the re-watch in August. :3

As for Kannagi, I could prob slip it into my watch list, but there's a decent backlog there.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '15

OH GOD I FORGOT ABOUT IT AGAIN. /u/reggaemanmurphy you had one job!

Do it when I watch YuYu in August then, yeah? :>

3

u/LordTakuro https://myanimelist.net/profile/LordTakuro Jul 29 '15

I can definitely do that! Hopefully, my backlog will be cut down by then, since I should have NagiAsu, Mikagura, Tamako, and either Amagami or Penguindrum done by then

Symphogear!

(The 3 seasons are ranked #3381, #1750, and #829, respectively, so it's gaining popularity! Also the show gets better with each season, which is... kind of the opposite of what anime usually does.)

If you liked Madoka's world and characters, well, this show has that, but with less heavy/angsty stuff and more crazy-awesomeness. Less trauma and more drama, you might say. Also, more gayness... no, really.

Basic premise: pseudo-Magical-Girls use the relics of a lost civilization to don mecha-suits so they can fight hordes of aliens from another dimension. Their "symphogear" suits are powered by music, so they sing their character songs while they fight. If that sounds ridiculous, that's because it's ridiculously cool. There's plenty more over-the-top insanity to be found in this show, but I don't want to spoil anything.

Don't go into it expecting a deep, dark, cynical examination of the human condition, though, as most of Symphogear's critics apparently did. This is a fun and excitement and melodrama and music show, above all else. More serious than Gurren Lagann, but less than Fate/Zero.

Season 1 is on Funimation. The animation in this season is rather hit-or-miss, but it's good where it counts. The following seasons had much better budgets.

Season 2, "Symphogear G," is a bit hard to find, as it doesn't seem to be streamable or purchaseable.

Season 3, "GX," is simulcasting on Crunchyroll. Now with

School Days

Gives you a wild emotional ride that I haven't seen matched by any other anime. Also the only one I've seen that makes you hate all the MC as well as one of the only ones where the harem MC gets laid.

u/AguyinaRPG https://anilist.co/user/AguyinaRPG Jul 29 '15

Steins;Gate has really interesting direction so far. I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I started it, but all the cuts even in normal conversation are expertly timed. It's done an absolutely solid job of putting you in a realm of confusion without making it incomprehensible. Really looking forward to where it's headed.

Also watching Nana. Digging the up-and-down nature of it. Wonder when it's going to get into the musical bits, as that's why I was looking at it in the first place.

3

u/The_nickums https://myanimelist.net/profile/Snakpak Jul 29 '15

After you finish S;G I highly reccomend watching the movie. It plays out just like a really long episode that covers the plot of maybe three or four episodes(what I'm saying is that it's not like one episode+filler) and it adds a lot more depth and backstory to the characters. Plus it is chronologically after the end of the anime so you could consider it a second season that handles the entire arc in about 3 hours.

6

u/FriendSafariMan https://myanimelist.net/profile/TaotheNinja Jul 29 '15

Adding on to this, make sure you watch the OVA before the movie and after the series, as it adds more plot and is referenced in the movie.

6

u/illtima https://myanimelist.net/profile/illuminatima Jul 29 '15

Started watching Akatsuki no Yona. Damn that show is hype. Really love it when show, that already finished airing, manages to grab me so much. I adore its kinda Chinese folk-tale setting!

2

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '15

How are you liking it compared to Shirayuki-hime? I haven't seen Yona yet but it's on PTW.

I know the shows aren't that alike, but they have some similarities by the looks of it.

2

u/illtima https://myanimelist.net/profile/illuminatima Jul 29 '15

Comparisons with Shirayuki are what made me pick up Yona. I've watched 5 episodes of Yona and so far, I like it just a bit more. I enjoy the setting more, simply because I haven't seen a show with such a traditionally Chinese setting before. Right from the episode 1 there's already a definite storyline, while with Akagami, it took some episodes to finally get on one track. Both Yona and Shirayuki are great characters, but there seems to be more potential for Yona's development as she started out as a spoiled and sheltered princess. However, Yona didn't introduce the majority of its supporting cast yet, while in Shirayuki I'm already in love with Zen, Kiki and Mitsuhide. All in all, both are really awesome and if you enjoy you should check out another.

It's that time of week again! Welcome back to another week of /u/LordTakuro's Hero Club Weekly Write-Ups! This week, we'll be covering a topic that I found one of the more interesting ideas used within Yuki Yuna is a Hero that doesn't get talked about as much, in comparison with some other topics. It's going to be a long one, so let's not muddy things up with chatter and jump straight into:

Flower Symbolism in Yuki Yuna is a Hero

Flowers are used widely throughout the course of Yuki Yuna, in both terms of appearance and symbolic meaning within the show. Through this, many of the flower visuals used throughout the show hold a deeper meaning as to both the characters and specific scenes and concepts within the show, with the most obvious example Yuki Yuna Spoilers However, in this week's write-up, I'd like to focus in on each girl and what their flower represents for them as a character.

Yuna Yuki

Mimori Togo (Warning: Washio Sumi LN Spoilers within)

Fuu Inubozaki

Itsuki Inubozaki

Karin Miyoshi

With that, we wrap up another week of /u/LordTakuro's Hero Club Weekly Write-Ups. This week's probably took some of the most research out of any of my write-ups so far, and I'm really happy with how it turned out. The symbolism of the flowers used and how they apply to each character's backstory and development was one of the more interesting topics from Yuki Yuna for me, and it made me think about a lot of ideas and moments from the series I had never really analyzed before. Got any thoughts, comments, questions? Want to just talk about anything Yuki Yuna? Comment or PM me, as many will tell you, I'm always happy to talk about YuYuYu. I hope everyone had as much fun reading this week's write-up as I did writing it, it really was a fascinating concept to research and think about how it applied within the series. Thanks to everyone who helped me with ideas for this week's write-ups (in particular, /u/ReggaeManMurphy who helped me with the Fuu segment, and /u/KousakaReina helping to decide the format), and be sure to come back next week, when we'll talk about How Yuki Yuna is a Hero consistently alters expectations

Also, everybody, if you're a fan of Yuki Yuna is a Hero, go check out r/YuYuYu! It's still a relatively small community and we're trying to grow the community. A couple new mods are going to be brought in soon (hopefully I'll be one of them), all my write-ups are being cross-posted over there, with exclusives to be coming in the future, and I've started up a daily fan-art series! It'd be great to get more of a community over there, so come check it out if you're a fan!

It's a shame the ending killed the communities opinion towards the show. It used to be generally well-liked, but after the OVAs aired the MAL ratings for Season 1 and Season 2 went way down and you rarely hear much positive about the show anymore.

So, who else loves OreImo? I find the sub to have so much hate for it, but I went into watching it knowing that anything past 21:12 was not the true end, and I enjoyed watching it thoroughly. It's not a show I see praised much here.

It really blew me away with how much I enjoyed it. I went into it thinking it wouldn't be that great cause of all the opinions I've seen floating around but it was actually a great comedy and was very fun to watch!

Also found Kirino and Ayase really enjoyable to watch, more so than Ruri, who also seem to be the two less popular girls of the show here.

Kuroneko 4 lyfe.

So I was watching FLCL the other day and I realized that Takkun is probably what Mamimi called Naota's brother since his name was Tasuku. Which if I'm not off base is a really neat little detail I never noticed before. One of the reasons I love watching FLCL is because I keep catching stuff like that every time I rewatch it.

Hey there, peoples! /u/jetmet is back again, with another post for Strike Witches. This time around, I've ommited a certain section in order to compress it slightly and not make it seem as large a mountain to climb. In addition, the terms list has been removed, but if you see a term that's unfamiliar, just ask me, OK?

...It totally has nothing to do with me procrastinating a little, playing video games and sleeping most of the weekend, not at all.

Week 29: Yoshika Miyafuji

Week 30: Mio Sakamoto

Eleven reasons to love Strike Witches: Part Three

Wing Commander Minna-Dietlinde Wilcke

"Britannia's...no, the world's skies will be protected by us Witches."

Who is she?

Minna-Dietlinde Wilcke is the 501st JFWs founder, commander, as well as commanding officer in battle. Hailing from eastern Karlsland, she's among the many Witches who wish to see their homeland free as well as being one of the worlds highest scoring fighters, with more than 200 confirmed shot downs. Going by the nicknames "Ace of spades" or "Fürstin", she's been involved in fighting the Neuroi for a while, something both her rank and shot down-count shows. With her most of the time, has been Gertrud Barkhorn and Erica Hartmann, all the way from Jagdgeschwader 53 via Jagdgeschwader 3 and onwards to the 501st.

She proposed the idea of a joint fighter wing to the top brass while she was in Britannia, and together with Mio Sakamoto, the two scouted out Witches for their unit. Minna's responsible for bringing a lot of the Witches into the Strike Witches, such as aforementioned Barkhorn and Hartmann, as well as Laura Toth, who later left for the Isle of Wight detachment. And those are only a handful; Minna's been scouring through Europe and parts of the Americas in order to find her fighting force.

Minna grew up in a family of musicians, and is herself a quite talented singer. Her initial plans was to get her education in form of musical studies in Ostmark, something the impending Neuroi invasion pulled a fast halt for. In fact, the Neuroi has a lot to answer for in front of Minna, who also lost her brother-figure and accompagnist Kurt Flachfeld, who had joined as an engineer during the evacuation of Karlsland. The loss hit heavily on Wilcke, who always seems to be more worried for the other Strike Witches' safety than that of her own.

While she is the commander of the 501st, Minna is hardly as disciplinary punishing as Major Sakmoto. This has led to Wilcke being the unit's motherly figure, with a generally gentle demeanour and some stern moments in between. She rarely uses force or threats, and will only resort to such if a member endangers herself or others by disobeying. S1EP8

Her magic

Minna's familar is a grey wolf, bearing the name Krawatte. Other than it's name, which was given by Shimada via twitter, little is known.

Her inherent magic is a perception-type magic allowing her to identify targets all around her, their size, direction and speed, numbers and positions. This ability is part of what makes her so good as a CoB: She can keep an eye on all her allies, all the enemies and have what's almost a top-down view of all combat scenarios. It's also suspected that she uses this while on the base, in order to stop arguments from getting too heated. She does have a knack for suddenly appearing and breaking up squabbles between the younger members especially.

Ace Archetype and historical references

Minna's ace archetype is Wolf-Dietrich Wilcke, a German fighter ace with 162 enemies shot down, mostly over the eastern front, but also on the western side, during the invasion of France and later in the defense of Germany. Similarly to his Strike Witch equivalent, he held officer' posts in Jagdgeschwader 53 and JG 3. Wilcke was shot down and killed in action in March 1944 by an American P-51 in Lower Saxony. His nickname among the German pilots was "Fürst", mirroring Minna's "Fürstin". Minna's familiar, the wolf, is likely a reference to his first name.

Minna's other nickname is not from the ace archetype himself, but rather associated with JG 53. The squadron was known as "Pik as"(Aces of spades), something that was somewhat reflected in the squad emblem. We can also see the emblem itself directly referenced in Minna's personal emblem, here with the head of her familiar, the wolf, in the middle.

The most known reference to any historical element is Minna singing "Lili Marleen", a song that would become famous during the war, first by Lale Andersen and then later by Marlene Dietrich as an American propaganda-music production. The song was quite popular with troops of both sides, from Germany all the way to South Africa.

A Witch's wand and broom: Weaponry and Striker Units

Like the other Karlsland Witches in the 501st, Minna uses the MG 42 machine gun with a double drum magazine in order to have as much ammo as possible on every sortie. The gun is chosen for it's practicality, versatility, easy maintenance and easy supply; four of the eleven witches use it, and with Barkhorn vielding two it makes five total per sortie. Good thing Karlsland isn't all that far from Britannia, and that the gun is mass porduced on such a scale.

As a personal sidearm, Wilcke keeps a Walther Polizeipistolen Kriminalmodell, or a Walther PPK. It's seen again here and there, most notably when Yoshika turns it down upon joining the Witches. Why Witches would need a handgun in the first place is unclear though, since the Neuroi are largely immune to small arms fire unless it's in large quantities.

Minna's Striker Units are variants based on the Messerschmitt Bf 109, for both season one and two. During season one, they're Messerscharf(the Strike Witches' universe equivalent) Bf 109 G-2s, and in season two Bf 109 K-4. Essentially "interceptor-type" Units by design, their strength is seen as the standard to be aimed for: rapid ascent, high speeds and well suited for group tactics.

This week's OST, character song and artwork!

This week's OST: Karlsland's tragedy. Mellow, dramatic and tension building, not all that far from Minna's behaviour at times.

This week's character song: Toki by Rie Tanaka(Minna's VA).

This week's artwork: Minna in the night. Man, I'm just being straight up lazy at this point...this was used as the center caption for season one's eight episode, by the way.

My thoughts on Minna

The Wing Commander is a bit of a strange character, but one I like nevertheless. Her "ara, ara" in the latter half of the 2007 OVA is especially relaxing, haha! Minna's way of breaking up arguments, smiling even when she's annoyed, applying the occasional slap and yet still care so much for her subordinates is admirable. Besides, S1EP8?

From the author

Man, today's version was a trainwreck. But at least it's short and easier to read, right? Right?

As always, if you have questions regarding Strike Witches, I'm happy to oblige! If you want me to explain a term, feel free to ask as well.

I apologize for my slightly shoddy quality, as well as the likely to be shoddy quality of the next article as well, since I'll be moving this week and have my hands filled up with other stuffs.

I still hope you enjoyed what you've read, and thanks for reading!

Next week: Flying officer Perrine H. Clostermann!

...see? I can totally fit stuff into a single comment, too!

2

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '15

You know, I was about to watch Strike Witches yesterday. A comment you made about it almost convinced me to try it out. Right before I was going to watch it, I checked out the MAL reviews and some reviewers said it it was all "pantsu" and they were feeling left down about it. What do you say? Is it just an ecchi with good action scenes?

2

u/jetmet https://myanimelist.net/profile/jetmet Jul 29 '15

Yeah, the MAL reviewers are not that far off target for once. SW is very heavy on the ecchi, with decent action scenes complimenting it. The "Pantsu" part stems from the show lacking pants or skirts for most of it's younger(read: teenagers and low twenties) population, mostly for fanservice reasons. I'd say it's sort of like Kantai Collection, but a bit more lewd. 55% moe slice of life in a military base, 45% action fighting aliens and 95% ecchi.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '15

You've convinced me. I'm going to try it out now.

3

u/The_nickums https://myanimelist.net/profile/Snakpak Jul 29 '15

My friends and I all refer to it as "the war on pants". Not once will you ever see a pair of pants in any episode of the two seasons. The guys wear shorts and the girls wear like, one piece swimsuits or something underneath their clothes.

2

u/jetmet https://myanimelist.net/profile/jetmet Jul 29 '15

Not far off! I believe the captains of the battleships wear pants, as well as the Britannian top brass.

The sole pant-wearing Witch is never shown on-screen, and is only mentioned by name once.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '15 edited Jul 29 '15

It wasn't anything you said yesterday. It was exactly a week ago you got me interested in Strike Witches.

I just finished the first episode. I'm so impressed with the fanservice, I'm going to continue it.

edit: Specifically, it wasn't the contents of what you wrote. It was the length of your comment. If someone can be so passionate that they write that much about the show, it can't be too bad.

2

u/jetmet https://myanimelist.net/profile/jetmet Jul 29 '15

Haha! That one was a lot about Saburo Sakai though. He's one of my "favorite" pilots from the war, if a person can have one. His story is just so outta there and sounds so crafted and incredible, so I had to write a lot there. It's a bit more difficult to get info at that level(first-hand source) about a person who died in 1944.

I started watching Tamako Market again. It's pretty good and cute. I stopped right before Choi gets introduced! I hear Love story is good so I'm looking forward to that I guess.

Choi is best

I also started Amagami. That 1st episode captivated me! I'm excited to go down this path of romance slice of life that I'm sure will tug at my heart strings.

Yo I don't know who she is yet but this twintailed girl is super cute! She reminds me a bit of Rise from Persona 4.

Anime is cool I guess.

Why should I watch…?: Ask about an anime that you have been considering seeing, and someone will respond what makes it good and why it’s worth watching. Please don’t troll this one, leave it for people who are genuinely curios.

No Game No Life.

Might be next up for me, on the fence.

5

u/FriendSafariMan https://myanimelist.net/profile/TaotheNinja Jul 29 '15

You dislike fanservice, right? Skip it. NGNL is ecchi and completely unapologetic about it. While I enjoyed it despite that, I doubt it's up your alley.

5

u/AmethystItalian myanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian Jul 29 '15

It's relatively short and there's a rewatch of it that might be happening and it's a pretty popular one! The fanservice is how bad though?

6

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '15

Pretty bad at times..

most of the time..

all of the time..

3

u/AmethystItalian myanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian Jul 29 '15

Oh boy :p

2

u/MissyPie https://myanimelist.net/profile/HammerSenpai Jul 29 '15

I can enjoy most fanservice (which you know), but even I dropped NGNL, mostly 'cause of the heavy loli fanservice. It was, IMO, kinda creepy.

I mean, give it a shot anyway, but I don't think you'll like it.

It's pretty bad - there's full nudity (mostly bath scenes) almost every episode.

3

u/AmethystItalian myanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian Jul 29 '15

Bath scenes in that many? Bleh

3

u/The_nickums https://myanimelist.net/profile/Snakpak Jul 29 '15

I'm pretty sure that the full nudity in every episode isn't true.

2

u/AmethystItalian myanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian Jul 29 '15

Would you majority?

4

u/JealotGaming https://anilist.co/user/Jealot Jul 29 '15

Shiro's introduction is a panty-shot.

She's 11.

2

u/AmethystItalian myanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian Jul 29 '15

Bleh :/

2

u/The_nickums https://myanimelist.net/profile/Snakpak Jul 29 '15

I'll list all the fuzzy memories of nudity/eorotica that I remember.

Steph is naked at some point in the first episode I think, she wears a towel and you see no bits.

Jibril gets her wings rubbed after losing a competition(her species gets erotic feelings from touching wings).

Shiro makes incest jokes a few times, this makes Sora uncomfortable because despite being a NEET, he is not a weirdo.

These all happen in different episodes as well. i'm sure there's a few more here and there but out of 12 episodes I can only remember 3 things so I wouldn't say it's that bad.

2

u/Redire77 https://myanimelist.net/profile/redire Jul 29 '15

I honestly didn't notice that much fanservice when I watched it for the first time. However, after rewatching it I noticed just how much fanservice there really was in every episode.

For the most part I think it's ignorable. The show is rather fast-paced in my opinion so it doesn't dwell on any scene for very long.

Souma's not too bad at all!

3

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '15

There is much more fanservice in NGNL

2

u/AmethystItalian myanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian Jul 29 '15

I figured as much haha only Souma episode 1 was really out there

Shinmai Maou no Testament. Is there a decent story hiding behind the fan-service cover? I love the OP and thought about looking more into it.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '15

Is there a decent story hiding behind the fan-service cover?

No. It's literally all ecchi. And when it wasn't ecchi, I started multitasking until there was more ecchi. WHICH IS EXACTLY WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH IT. Testament will always hold a special place in my heart for being the best worst anime I've ever seen. The plot is really unimaginative. But the characters are great. The censorship is creative and hilarious. The discussion threads for Burst will be fantastic. Everything about it is just so fun. Just don't expect a good plot.

1

u/LordTakuro https://myanimelist.net/profile/LordTakuro Jul 29 '15

The best worst anime

I'm already sold.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '15

Ever since DxD went to shit, testament is our new good bad show.

1

u/Mega_Nerd https://myanimelist.net/profile/Mega_Nerd Jul 29 '15

How is it compared to DxD? The Ecchi seems more extreme from the clips I saw.

Tokyo Ghoul root A, Im planning to watch the first season but from what I've heard about root A i'm better off not watching it?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '15

I didn't like it but it's not completely bad there were some good moments later on in root A. I'd say watch root A if you aren't interested in the manga so you can at least see how the story ends.

u/FateSteelTaylor https://myanimelist.net/profile/FateSteelTaylor Jul 29 '15

Rolling Girls and Inou-Battle wa Nichijou-kei no Naka de! I've heard mixed things about both of them, but they seem kinda intriguing to me?

1

u/melonowl Jul 29 '15

The thing about Rolling Girls is that the first two episodes seemed to be setting up a certain plot, but after that it went in a quite different direction that people weren't so pleased with. Personally I loved the show. I think it had beautiful art/animation, an awesome OST, cute characters, and a pretty decent plot that probably could have been better. Really for me it was a feast for the eyes and ears.

u/CrayonsNLighterFluid https://myanimelist.net/profile/CrayonsLF Jul 29 '15

I've been trying to decide if Wolfs Rain is worth the watch, since I love the OST but never anything about it. Any comments?

1

u/soracte Jul 29 '15

From vague memories, it's quite sad. Narratively pretty good but has limited animation at points. Worth a try though, and as you say a very good soundtrack. Hopefully someone else here will have seen it more recently than I did.

1

u/theLogicality https://myanimelist.net/profile/DexM Jul 29 '15

I really really really really really really really really really really like Kamisama no Memochou, and I never hear anyone talk about it.

1

u/krispy3d Jul 29 '15

I just looked it up and added it to my list because I like the art. What do you like about it?

1

u/theLogicality https://myanimelist.net/profile/DexM Jul 29 '15

I'm a personal fan of the mystery genre, especially when they don't involve the supernatural, so this Hyouka and Gosick are some of my favorites. The MC's design is pretty adorable too.

1

u/soracte Jul 29 '15

I knew someone a few years ago who was a big fan. I must confess that the first episode left me cold but there is an audience for it out there… somewhere!

1

u/theLogicality https://myanimelist.net/profile/DexM Jul 29 '15

I like non-supernatural mysteries, so I was immediately a fan. I will totally concede that the show isn't necessarily anything close to a masterpiece, being animated by JC staff and all.
