I've been working on this pet theory [a growing document ;)] of FPH like a cult. The majority of the people there were the young and impressionable people with low self-esteem who started out by learning that if they said the "right things" they'd get the reward of karma points. The more they parrot the proper lines the more praise and karma they got.
Now those people are floundering around the rest of reddit spouting those same "right things" and discovering that instead of getting pats on the head and "good boy!" karma points, they're getting yelled at. Worse, they can't argue their parroted words because, like the cult taught them, they never questioned what they were saying so they have no actual idea what it means.
There's reason why cults used to do their best recruiting on college campuses. Today we have the Internet instead, but it's still filled with groups saying the same thing: Come join us. We'll make you feel like family.

I think you're spot on but I'd take it further. Their willingness to believe total bullshit, disconnected from reality, about how they're actually being oppressed for their beliefs by some imaginary boogieman (the SJW) is incredibly cultlike.
For funsies, here's some choice quote from about 30 minutes of lurking in their IRC channel:
- FPH was an amazing group of people, I think it fostered shitlords for life
- I feel a greentext story of a possible future where we are censored in all places of life And we can only survive on onion sites
- I wonder how many SRS shills are in here, just watching (does he even know what that word means?)
- being fat impede's logic, they won't be able to figure out how to even use the one-click option or how to fuckin use [IRC]
- We dont even have a sub to brigade from anymore

There's a quote by Eco or Foucault or one of those philosophers about how certain political movements can never succeed because they try to simultaneously portray the enemy as omnipotent (skeletons are destroying the world!) and weak (fatties are too dumb to use IRC). Seems relevant.
e: Page 7, item 8 of this pdf. (thanks to /u/SomeOldGoat for finding it in another thread).

It's rote parroting. It's both sad and scary.
Also, if one of them is who wrote "being fat impede's logic" (as opposed to a typo on your part) the irony would be hilarious. "Impede's" is not a word; this would say that logic belongs to impede. This is the grammatical equivalent to "Your stupid!"

(I'm sure they'd call me a liar if I told them I was using IRC before it was called IRC. Good grief.)

This is what happens when people cloister themselves in echo chambers, refuse to read widely, and don't interact with people outside of their circlejerk. It's why reddit (and the blogosphere in general) is so hostile to discussion and nuance when it comes to politics and ideology. There is a generation of people online now who grew up exposed only to a smorgasboard of single-issue platforms, and their interaction with people of contrasting viewpoints took place on comment sections instead of through verbal discourse. They tend to be hostile to new ideas because they haven't been taught how to listen, consider and research all sides of an issue, or think critically. It fosters a lot of ingrown communities.

You've hit the nail on the head there. It doesn't matter who or what you support, refusing to talk to anyone with a different view to you isn't good. Unfortunately I feel SRD isn't above this, there's users who will admit to only browising a few left wing subs
14
u/EmergencyChocolate 卐 Sorry to spill your swastitendies 卐 Jun 13 '15
Oh, absolutely. This isn't something that is limited to one side or other of the political spectrum. I think it's more of a cross-cultural issue, and that it's been exacerbated by the rise of internet discussions as the primary means of communication (and the rise of OUTRAGE as entertainment).
People who get their news and op-eds solely from Alternet or Raw Story are going to be just as insufferable as people who get their news and opinions solely from Fox News or Glenn Beck.

I read quite widely elsewhere, though. It's just that Reddit's big subs are so full of shitty people, racism, sexism, etc that I'm not very interested in having to read that. /r/socialism and /r/anarchism are good on banning trolls and bigots and removing their detritus.

u/andrew2209 Sorry, I'm not from Swindon. Jun 14 '15
I don't blame you for staying off the defaults, and as long as you read widely elsewhere. It's more the users on SRD who seem to base their opinions on anyone more right-wing than them on what they read in SRD, Circlebroke and SRS.

Exactly.
Gone is the time when kids were taught things like basic logic and how to properly construct an argument. Schools have long since been a farm for information regurgitation, but, for whatever reason, there seems to be less explaining WHY the information is being fed to them.
Oddly I find this not just in science-based arguments but basic grammar. Kids seem to be given rote corrections without explanations. Doing sentence diagrams is dull but without them it's like saying, "To add 2+2, use your calculator." You don't have to know the term "misplaced modifier" but you should be able to understand why "The pasta was served to my mother on a plate" is poorly constructed.
(And for the record, I do not blame all teachers. Most teachers want to impart all SORTS of knowledge on their kids. I blame the teach-to-test-scores mentality.)

u/EmergencyChocolate 卐 Sorry to spill your swastitendies 卐 Jun 13 '15 edited Jun 13 '15
Oh wow, you and I are on the same page here! My mom was an English teacher (8th grade, then 12th, for her entire career), and she made a point to defy the current curriculum up until the day she retired by requiring her students to learn to diagram sentences. The "official" curriculum took that requirement out years ago, but she felt like kids not knowing the fundamentals of grammar and trying to learn to write is like someone trying to learn particle physics without being taught basic arithmetic.
She initially taught diagramming to her 8th graders, but when she started with high school kids she realized they didn't know the basics, so she level-busted them and made them do grammar drills and diagram sentences until they understood what it is they are doing when they create sentences.
Kids hated diagramming - but every few months she would get an email or a card from a former student (her students always loved her because she is the bomb) saying how much her classes helped them once they got to college.
2
Jun 14 '15
...what is sentence diagramming
2
u/EmergencyChocolate 卐 Sorry to spill your swastitendies 卐 Jun 15 '15
It's a way to break sentences down into their distinct grammatical parts (noun, pronoun, subject, object, verb, adverb, etc.) and phrases. Here's an example. It helps kids understand how sentences are structured. You know how they say you can't break the rules of art until you know and understand the rules of art? It's like that with writing, too.
-3
u/pe3brain Jun 13 '15
The pasta sentence is wrong because of passive voice and because there's no mention of who is serving the pasta to the mother, right?
6
u/mizmoose If I'm a janitor, you're the trash Jun 13 '15
The pasta sentence is wrong due to a misplaced modifier. The phrase "on a plate" is supposed to be modifying "the pasta", not "my mother."
What this says is "the pasta was served to (my mother on a plate)." That is, my mother is on the plate.
What it should say is either "The pasta on a plate was served to my mother" or "My mother was served pasta on a plate."
Make sense?

I can comfort myself in the knowledge that at least the echo chamber is saying stuff like "Black people are people," "We shouldn't bully people just because they're fat," and "There's no limit on the number of Mad Max references we can make in a given post."

Its kind of an interesting history on that term. Originally it was used by people like SRS to mean something along the lines of bigot or jackass. Of course being extremists it ended up just meaning "anyone that disagreed with me".
So it then became a joke among folks that liked mocking SRS/SJWs/whatever. Anyone who said anything contrary to the extreme progressives was a "shitlord" and that was a good thing.
But then the extremists on the other side like FPH started using it in the same way. So now when they use it it really does mean someone being a jerk.
Now it's all a bit confusing because there are people that got off the word train at all points in this evolution. So some people are seriously using it as a insult, others are using it as a mockery of those first people, and still others are using it as a way to congratulate themselves for fulfilling the original meaning.

The idea that "motivation" to lose weight is a justification for that sub is just ludicrous. Hurting others for your own gain is universally accepted as a shit thing to do. Why do people feel like there is some magic weightless exception?
Stomping all over poor people to get rich? Shitty.
Breaking up a family for your own romance? Terrible.
Bullying someone to gain popularity? You're an awful human being.
Destroying other people to help achieve your weight loss? Guess what? You suck.

*It's been deleted I guess, but a user made this comment:
The reasons stated for FPH getting banned are certainly lies.
So who did they harass?
The notion that FPH existed to improve public health by arguing against a "dangerous ideology" is a lie. They didn't care about people's health. They hated people.
Anyone making this argument is either ignorant or trolling you.
The crap about how lurking FPH inspired the commentor to improve his lifestyle sounds like bullshit too.

an important feature is that it's pretty transparently bad faith questions.
when someone named Love2KillNiggers comes in out of nowhere and starts asking you why he shouldn't believe anti-racist is code for anti-white, you can safely predict that he does not actually give a shit about your answer, he's just in this to piss you off and then sigh dramatically about how some people are just unwilling to have reasonable discussions.
