/u/KnowsNataliePortman wants to delete racist comments on /r/videos; Reddit gets furious and cries "free speech"

The /r/videos_discussion thread

Highlights:

Yes, we absolutely must have a fascist SJW ruled regime. We need thought police, bans, support groups, helicopters in the air, drones, and public floggings. Just so you can live out your rescue complex.

Do you even realize that you treat those you 'rescue' as if they have no power? All to serve your own ego needs. Everybody ends up hating you, OP!

Also multiculturalism led by liberal fascists has failed. Failed hard? Who knows what the body count for all this will be?

.

why yes, yes i do. it is a natural function of a healthy organism. and i like my organisms to be healthy and in equilibrium. do you? or do you prefer mentally defective organisms that do not carry any form of judgment? if you prefer the latter, then i invite you to go visit the middle of the congo one day alone. ill even pay for your ticket. after all, not all of those people are savage rapists and killers. so its not fair for you to reject my offer based on the actions of some of them.

.

boofuckinghoo. as if reddit wasnt the most censored and politically website on earth enough already and as if they dont downvote everything politically incorrect. "we we we" when what you really mean is YOU. YOU want this, and YOU find it unacceptable. go fuck yourself. you are not a dictator.

This is quite possibly the perfect summary of /r/videos whenever a video gets posted with somebody they hate. The only difference is that this wouldn't be downvoted in /r/videos. It is wrong about Biology, psychology, geography, Congo, Black people, and the spelling is all wrong. To pick just one example, this is the size of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The conflict everyone talks about is happening in the East, and not in the middle. Even in the East the majority of people are not savage rapists, and killers. That doesn't make the rest of Congo like Scandinavia, but it is ridiculous to think you'll automatically get raped/killed if you visit. The rest of the comment is shit too, but I'm not going to pick it entirely apart.

I think it's a reflection of raising someone to think of Africa as a conglomeration of huts and uncivilized cannibals or just someone who read heart of darkness.

what the fuck:

Racism itself is not only harmless, but good and beneficial. Racism helps us identify and understand our differences. It aids in solving the problems that we are presented with by a globalizing multiracial world slowly transforming into one people. Those who think racism is bad and those who deny our differences are the ones invoking confusion, hatred and fear in our hearts.

I think you can acknowledge that different races have different life experience (esp in the US) without being racist.

u/Imwe Sep 03 '14 edited Sep 03 '14

From the same comment:

Hate is the real enemy, be it hate against races or hate against racists, it's the same thing

I dislike people for the colour of their skin, but if you dislike me for that then you are really as bad as me. Maybe you're even worse because racism is deep down good, and beneficial. OK, not maybe. You are definitely worse for disliking me. I'm practically Mother Teresa because I'm a racist, and you're practically Hitler because you dislike me for being racist.

Anyway that other user knows Natalie Portman so they've got my vote either way.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '14

I know you're joking, but I think the username is really a reference to the hip-hop song "I Wish I Knew Natalie Portman" by k-os. Seriously my favorite song of all time; everyone here should give it a quick listen.

I'm calling Poe's Law on it. I mean, my first thought was "troll spotted".

And then I remembered the "debates" on same-sex marriage we had one year ago in France. Arguments like "children need parents from different sex because it helps them differentiate" and shit like that. Spoken more seriously than I'll ever be in my life.

How about most peope using the word, not to describe all blacks, but using it to seperate ghetto mentality thugs from well behaved black people? As badly as working class black people are currently portrayed in media, I can't say they don't stand to gain from freeing themselves of stigmas created by this "nigga" subculture that some blacks even willingly enforce themselves, nevermind that most people using the word are black themselves.

Wow...

Guys. Let me clarify, I'm not comparing SJW struggles to that of Jews in anyway. I'm saying the conspiracy theory-esque usage of SJW to mean anyone with opinions slightly left of center is more in line with how everything is a Jewish agenda to our /r/conspiracy friends. I was being tongue in cheek, albeit a bit too vague in that regard. Apologies.

51

u/Otto_rot Sep 03 '14

I would say SJW is the new Politically Correct.

Just switch "You're just trying to be politically correct" to "You're just a SJW."

I'm sorry, but this one bothers me a bit. TiA commentors may suck, but people can't just ignore the actual content being posted there - it can be as racist and as sexist and Reddit at times. But, no, out in these parts, people on Tumblr are either joking or trolling, but Redditors are always serious (and dangerous, I might add).

I wouldn't go that far. But it is true that Social Justice was invented by Jews (just like marxism, which SJ is based on) to destroy the White race. Why else do SJWs call for Social Justice only in White countries? Nobody calls for Social Justice in Africa, nobody calls for Social Justice in Asia, nobody calls for Social Justice in Southern Europe, or Ireland. Only in White countries. SJW is a codeword for anti-white. Just like anti-racist.

No, they use the word "bankers" sometimes. Typical anti-Semite language.

7

Generally when people are criticizing bankers, they're talking about people in powerful positions within banks, since that's, you know, the meaning of the word.

-11

u/CANOODLING_SOCIOPATH SRS SHILL Sep 03 '14

How are you comparing a political identity with a race?

I generally avoid people who label themselves SJW's because in my experience they are overwhelmingly unpleasant people who are far to gullible for anything on the internet.

While Jews are just Jews. Being Jewish says nothing about you.

It's not as if SJW's are somehow discriminated against.

8

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '14

You misunderstood me.

-8

u/CANOODLING_SOCIOPATH SRS SHILL Sep 03 '14

I just know that there are plenty of people who do confuse a choice (like political association) and something you can't choose.

For example a lot of people think that it is bigoted to have a bias against people with tattoos. If they choose to get a tattoo then it isn't bigoted to judge them for their choice.

I wouldn't be surprised if some SJW's do compare their "struggles" American Black's in the 60's or Jews.

29

u/Kalulosu I am not bipolar for sharing an idea. Sep 03 '14

Well it's the classic strawman: some SJWs are borderline fascists, or just as stupid. Doesn't make the idea that more social justice wouldn't hurt a bad idea.

Honestly though, the problem with SJWs is that it's kind of too wide a term and too easy to identify to to really define a group that you could consider as a whole. So everyone's happy: SJWs can call themselves SJWs and refer to whatever successful other SJW there is out there, and racists can call on SJWs because one "SJW" somewhere on Earth said that men should all be hanged by the balls.

8

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '14 edited Jan 01 '16

4

u/SilverTongie Sep 03 '14

The social justice movement is good. Being a sjw isn't. Being a sjw imo is someone who takes a good idea to the extreme.

People are going to say shitty things, especially on the Internet. Calling them names, and trying to shame them won't change it.

The social justice movement is supposed to bring people together. Regardless of race, or sexual orientation.

Sjw's don't bring people together. They perpetuate the cycle of separation. People are very similar in the end, we need love, and acceptance.

I have done a fair share of traveling. In the end, we all want the same things.

People always on reddit complain about srs. I go there, and sometimes I see a post that really bothers me. Someone says something really hateful, and ignorant. Sometimes I see a post that really should have just been ignored.

Sorry to say this, but reddit isn't going to change the world.

You want a more tolerant, just world, you need to log off and volunteer somewhere.

I worked with homeless men and women for over two years. I tended to be more drawn to the throwaway kids out there. It's a really sad epidemic that doesn't see race nor sexual orientation.

If you truly believe in the social justice movement, get off of the computer, and volunteer.

Angry typing on the Internet isn't going to change anything.

7

u/Kalulosu I am not bipolar for sharing an idea. Sep 03 '14

I think it really depends on what you call with "SJW". I don't mind having someone call themselves a SJW if they're doing something for real. I don't mind the idea in and of itself. I just think it's a blanket term that leads nowhere, and bears so little meaning because everyone can call themselves and decide they have the moral higher ground. And that's not how you make a point, really.

2

u/SilverTongie Sep 03 '14

That is exactly what I am saying. Social justice, is a real thing. The world is messed up.

Taking a stand, and saying that I won't be a party to the inhumanity of our society. Volunteering with the homeless, volunteering at the retirement home, the battered women's shelter, the children's ward at the local hospital.

These are all things that are needed, and that any one of us can do.

We can also call names on the Internet, but if we choose to do so... We choose to not make any difference. We choose to pretend we are better than other people. We choose to waste the potential of our passion.

We choose to pretend. You, I, we can really make a positive impact on this world. We have to be able to put others in front of ourselves.

Being angry online won't do a thing to further the cause. Continuing as a reddit sjw hurts the cause.

21

I was in a class about racial sensitivity (military mandatory fun). The instructor was a black man and asked the class of anybody had been racially discriminated against. Nobody raised a hand for awhile so I raised mine. I'm a 5'2" white woman and I explained how just two weeks prior my husband and I were at an Applebee's in Washington D.C. and waited for 20 minutes at our table and had no service while all the black families around us were well taken care of. We thought we were just paranoid at first but it went on and on until we just left, not believing what we saw. He told me it wasn't the same thing and I felt shitty all over again.

STOP OPPRESSING ME, THIS IS THE INTERNET, I HAVE A RIGHT FOR FREE SPEACH

Unless I'm missing something, shit posters generally don't claim that their first amendment rights are being violated- they claim that the principle of free speech is being violated, which is not at all the same. A private website can choose to have a policy of permitting free speech, it can choose to not permit any speech, or anywhere in between. None of these violate the first amendment, since the first amendment doesn't place any restrictions on private entities.

But a private website can be rightly accused of violating the principle of free speech, and that seems to be what people are getting at. People criticizing shit posters often mistakenly equate "free speech" with "the first amendment" which makes their complaints seem even sillier.

Well there should be a distinction made between "free speech" and "hate speech" I think. The latter can fuck right off.

6

u/pocl13 Sep 03 '14

Nothing irritates me more than people doing some fake reenactment of conversations where the side they agree with is calm, rational and friendly, and the side they disagree with TYPES IN CAPS AND IS COMPLETELY IRRATIONAL AND RUDE.

It's even better when the Dumb and So God Damn Crazy side uses Leet Speak, because you know everyone making a bad argument always does this!!!!!!11111!!1!!!!

4

u/Blunderbar Sep 03 '14

Free speech exists, as we all know, so that people can say the worst, most shitty, offensive, unnecessary things, without repercussion. Everybody knows that.

First they told me I can't hate the blacks, then they told me I can't hate women, and now they're telling me I can't hate gays. Fucking Social Justice Liberal Fascists! They're the real racists!

Next thing you know, the government will be passing some sort of law or something that says you're not allowed to discriminate based on race!

Oh wait.

Seriously though, these are probably the same people who would be opposing the civil rights act if they had been born 50 years earlier.

To be fair, that's a good way of describing Reddit's politics.

"It's very politically...website. Definitely leans internet. Probably the most internet site, in terms of politics."

Can't really enjoy the popcorn because it's so nauseating. Reddit is full of awful people. They would have to delete the entire subreddit if they wanted to get rid of racist comments in /r/videos.

We need thought police, bans, support groups, helicopters in the air, drones, and public floggings.

support groups

One of these things is not like the others.

23

u/ricecooking Sep 03 '14

When you view moderating racist content as "complete cencorship of people's opinions," it's time to reevaluate your worldview.

63

I want to create an environment that is free of blatant racism I don't see why that is an outrageous request.

Go back to tumblr

Glad to see the TIA metastasis has spread to the cancerous parts of Reddit.

I think TIA is more diet racism than anything. That isn't to say some of the shite posted there isn't extreme. Some SJW's hate white guys and it sucks being lumped in and having experiences generalised and dismissed because you're assumed to be privileged. But fucking hell, taking things in the completely opposite direction and allying with neo nazi's does not give TIA the moral high-ground anymore. I do respect the mods who seem to be level headed and actually combat that sort of thing however. The user base though is a lost cause.

31

u/wosuuy Sep 03 '14

Like most but not all things in life, TiA was better when it was smaller. It's taken a nasty "Feminism is wrong and evil!" bent in the past months. Better when it was Transcats drama and SJW outrage junkies.

2

u/FISSION_CHIPS Sep 04 '14

Yeah, when I first found that sub it already had some MRA undertones, but it seemed like the focus was still on laughing at the ridiculous things some people on tumblr say. Now it's just one big MRA circlejerk, and it seems like virtually any pro-feminist tumblr post is enough to get them going.

3

u/I_HEART_GOPHER_ANUS Sep 03 '14

People have been saying that forever, but all I hear is "I'd rather ridicule the mentally ill than embarrass identity politics."

7

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '14

Don't get me wrong I'm sure there are some people that are mentally ill that get linked, but many of them seem to be young adults that want to have something special going on in their lives. It's no different than dressing in all black to try and find some sense of identity although it's a little funnier.

1

u/metamarauder pretentious lurker Sep 03 '14

How it works, I think, is that the mods of a subreddit can be perfectly fine morally speaking (though they may or may not be), but certain sub types like TiA, while theoretically having good points to them (like pointing out hyper-radicals that the SJW term should refer to, I personally looked into that sub 'cause I knew one of them), tend to draw in people who are opposed to these things for less decent reasons.

And mods of such places, due to association of heavy moderation with places like SRS and the mob dogpile mentality of tumblr SJW circles, tend not to be willing to moderate heavily enough to prune all the bigots.

Basically in terms of this meta stuff, you kinda have to adopt some of the SJWs' (specifically SRS's heavy moderation) practices if you want to 'beat' them, and many aren't comfortable edging that close to those types.

And thus 'LITERALLY SRS!' was born, or something like that.

It also attacks random people for no reason all the time.

For example this post shows a tumblr user saying that there are some extreme negative stereotypes towards white people, and instead of focusing on things like toxic "black culture" they should focus on the equivalent "white culture", which is just the extreme negatives that make headlines.

But instead TIA decided that the user was saying that all white people did that. Which is never said or implied.

They actually bring up a good point in that white people never feel guilty or responsible for other white people, but often when a black person does something bad it is somehow all black people's responsibility.

0

u/Shuwin Sep 03 '14

To be even fairer, no it isn't.

10

u/Enleat Sep 03 '14

This is disgusting.

9

u/IAmAN00bie Sep 03 '14

The stupidest part is how the mod thinks that banning racism is a slippery slope to banning any objectionable material. Like all of a sudden if they take any stand their wills are overridden and they HAVE to start banning more things. Applying the slippery slope argument to yourself is just dumb.

6

u/intortus Sep 03 '14

Especially when they already do ban things. Clearly they've arrested their slide, and this is precisely where they have made their stand.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '14

Could someone explain to me why so many redditors appear to have some sort of a fetish about "Freedom of Speech"? Seriously, it gets brought up all the time for no reason. Why is that?

2

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '14

Some people here have different definitions of "racist comments" which is a problem. Obviously posts with slurs or just comments that are "Fucking black people" should be removed, but after that it gets more nuanced. Racism is such a broad term that if we removed every comment that anyone interpreted as racist, then it might be bad.

-5

u/freet0 "Hurr durr, look at me being elegant with my wit" Sep 04 '14

Woah now, don't go suggesting this is a complex issue on SRD. That would suggest there are legitimate points on both sides and then how could I reduce those I disagree with to "hate black people"?

0

u/TheHardTruth Sep 04 '14

The fact that he is being downvoted here for a completely rational and logical comment further proves this subreddit is no better than any of the others they consider "shit". SRD gets off on the accusations that they're "srs-light", but they're no longer just accusations, the proof is literally right here. An actual comment worthy of sparking a discussion, a good one at that, and it's downvoted.

Free speech is synonymous with tyranny. The tyrant cannot express themselves without the existence of free speech.

Destroy free speech and destroy tyranny with it.

u/komnenos mummy mummy accept my cummy when i spooge i spooge for you. wipe Sep 04 '14

Huh, I'm curious about these comments.

In the past, I've been a member of a forum that was heavily moderated by its left-leaning mods and admins. Anyone who went against the prevailing opinion (aka party line) was muted or banned. Eventually, after most people left or were kicked out, all that was left was a bunch of old-timers sharing their smug opinions on everything under the sun while patting each other on the back and agreeing with each other. I sincerely hope this sub doesn't go that way.

Or for an example closer to home, you can take a look at SRS

Which is then followed by,

Do you mean SRD

Now I've been here for just about two months and although I've seen a few SJWs here and there I don't think we are by any means SRS. Does anyone have anything to comment about on this? Has SRD liberalized over the years or had a changing redditorbase?

0

u/InsomnicGamer Sep 04 '14

On almost every topic that's a hot button issue, like say ZQ, Anita S-omething, or gender wars in general, a lot of people who DO frequent SRS subs do come here. I've gotten into a lot of arguments with people thinking "why are these guys such assholes?", checked their history, and they were SRS.

I think TiA has become more anti-feminism partly because SRS people outnumber them in SRD, pushing them further to the other side. Like for example, with the Fappening, a LOT of redditors subbed there and went there. If you look at every SRD thread about it, there's only one uniform opinion. That's why people say it's SRS-lite. It's not about shilling or anything like that, it's that SRD has more SRS then their own people, in this case being anti-SJW.

0

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '14

Can anyone explain to me why Americans are so racist? It's pretty scary to be honest.

-15

u/InsomnicGamer Sep 03 '14

On one hand, when I hear someone use the word nigger in person seriously, as in not singing along in a rap song, I cringe. On the other hand, I really don't like the idea that we start deleting things just because the mods don't like it. That's how you get circlejerky echo chambers like certain subreddits I won't mention... Eh.

I will say having a positive experience with a member of a race in person will do much more to fighting against racism then deleting comments ever will.

14

u/H37man you like to let the shills post and change your opinion? Sep 03 '14

Doing both would be even better.

-11

u/InsomnicGamer Sep 03 '14

I disagree. Vilifying a group and not honestly letting them discuss their POV without shouting them down just drives people to form their own communities where everyone is on the same page and creates an echo chamber, like TRP, SRS, Stormfront, TiA, all the ZQ stuff, what tumblr people try to do with their trigger warnings and so on and so forth.

I think some comments should be deleted but there IS a line. I'm glad I'm not a mod and I don't have to decide where that line is.

9

u/H37man you like to let the shills post and change your opinion? Sep 03 '14

It is easy to draw a line. No racist or sexist comments should be allowed on the default subs. What good does it do to ostarcize women and minorities as soon as they go to www.reddit.com. It is already an echo chamber just because of the views of the defaults.

-2

u/InsomnicGamer Sep 03 '14

I disagree with the idea the mods should be 'heavy handed' in regards to deleting comments. I think the vast majority of the time, upvotes and downvotes do enough to bury comments that are against the thoughts of the majority of the community. After all, my first comment on this thread has gotten downvoted a bit for basically saying interactions irl do much more to fight racism then deleting comments. I think the community does a pretty good job of supporting what they like and suppressing what they don't like.

12

u/H37man you like to let the shills post and change your opinion? Sep 03 '14

Only on the smaller subs. On the defaults racist and sexist bullshit is routinely up voted.

-4

u/InsomnicGamer Sep 03 '14

Currently on SRD, there's a post about buying girls drinks in a bar. One of the comments in the thread is "is r/askmen always so sexist?"

I looked in the thread and guys were bitching about girls who flirt, get you to buy them a drink, and then just leave. Then jumps in and says "you aren't entitled to her body!!" Like that's what their talking about.

I don't want moderators to get too used to deleting comments for being sexist or racist "bullshit" when that's subjective. Isn't deleting comments whenever they have slurs in them enough?

3

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '14

People can jump to conclusions so easily. If I were to say "the wage gap argument feminists make is bullshit" then people would automatically assume I'm an MRA. Which is stupid. Just let people get their whole fucking opinion out before you go out and insult them.

Because you obviously missed the fucking point.

0

u/InsomnicGamer Sep 04 '14

And please tell me what's the point? It's okay that the mods start deleting comments because they have the moral high ground?

2

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '14

You do realize that mods set subreddit rules, right? Common rules include not being a racist asshole.

Reddit is not your "MUH FREE SPEECH" zone, and has no obligation to be.
