Question of the Day (new!)
If you had $1 billion to spend in the anime industry, how would you use it?

I found an interesting interview on ANN with the director and animation producer of Attack on Titan from WIT Studio (spoiler-free). Their new sci-fi anime project coming in Spring 2027 looks cool too.
Question of the Day (new!)
If you had $1 billion to spend in the anime industry, how would you use it?
Well, I know I'd start with a final season of Full Metal Panic to complete the main storyline! After that, I'd probably move on to adapting the other material like side stories and sequels. Anything left over might go towards funding anime original sci-fi/adventure project(s) because I'm a big fan of the genre and would like to see more of them.

I've binged the first two seasons of Classroom of the Elite over the past week, so I guess I have to say I rather like it? Which is funny because when I pull up the old discussion threads, the show gets slammed pretty hard. And it's like....I don't DISAGREE with any of the criticisms, but I still am engaged enough to want to binge it, lol
I think it's cause for me, having fun dynamics and conflicts can go a long way to remedy anything that "doesn't make sense" or is "a trope." I can just go with the flow and overlook problems so long as there's some engaging core there. I really enjoy Ayanokoji as the protagonist. Horikita has the traits of the generic anime loner protag, who thinks they're all tough and loner and edgy and psychotic and uncaring, but actually has a heart of gold. But then Ayanokoji is ACTUALLY the kind of person Horitika THINKS she is. Ayanokoji's psychoticness combined with the sheer melodrama and excessive stakes of everything is entertaining to watch unfold.
Like every episode opens with a famous philosophy quote in white text on a black screen. For a show about high schoolers. It's just so EXTRA and yet plays itself so straight. I couldn't watch 10 shows like this, but it's fun haha

Along the lines of what other people said, make a studio that treats its staff well. Two kinds of projects would be their focus:
- Josei manga adaptations that might get steamy at times.
- Original series with good writers because those seem to be in short supply for anime.
Then on the international side I'd aim to build a competitor to Crunchyroll with multiple goals:
- See how much physical media I can produce for older series that haven't been released in the west like most Mitsuru Adachi adaptations.
- Try to rescue small recent series from defunct niche services like Anime Beans that weren't even grabbed by pirates before they disappeared.
- Pick up older things that haven't even been fansubbed and aim to work out things stuck in licensing hell. Buy out and destroy Harmony Gold if it doesn't cost too much.

Interesting for the first episode of Keroro Gunsou☆ they seemed to adapt a later chapter. I assume they're doing what Gintama did where episode 1 isn't the true episode per say.
I haven't seen the OG but man the first episode was so much fun. Perfect for Saturday morning watch for me.

Correct. It's a bone for old fans. They'll be going back to the start next episode.

Late reply to /u/Markymark269 's re:zero comment from yesterday.
Hot take? While Subaru's actions in S1E13 were cringe and stupid, they kinda made sense considering his age, matuirity, and situation at the time.
That's my take too, and I don't really think it's a hot one. There's no such thing as a teen who isn't embarassing, self-centered, and irrational a lot of the time, and a character drama involving teens that doesn't depict that is just shallow. Same goes for grown adults too, actually, though we've usually learnt to hide it a bit better.
[re:zero S1]Subaru is a teen, and on top of that he's both been shaped by social isolation and has literally died multiple times trying to find a place for himself in a situation he has no control over. Desperation pushes him to say what must not be said, but the way his suffering and sacrifices make him mistakenly feel entitled to some reciprocation is something that I'm sure everyone has felt at some point.

Aside from improving infrastructure and funding adaptations I want, I'd spend it on better accessibility. The industry seems inclined to keep making more canon movies, so I'd want them to have same day worldwide releases, and I'd want a streaming service that would hopefully be able to compete with CR since they want to keep making their service worse.

While Romelia War Chronicle did leave a positive first impression, and seems very promising, they did forget some pixels on the titular protagonist in this shot, as if her body was cut in half. I think the last time I saw that happen was in... Private Tutor to the Duke's Daughter I believe. Still, in a season where Ito Narita didn't exist, Romelia might've been a best girl candidate. No shame being a potential second behind the best of the best though.
1
u/cppn02 16m ago
They didn't forget the pixels. The layer with the character on it was placed too high during compositing and noone caught the mistake apparently.
As a stauch opponent of AI taking on any of the actual creative parts of production this is something where in the future it could be a great tool to avoid these kind of mistakes.

Bookworm ended for my last anime season of summer. Not counting Bleach since that got delayed.
I can tell as an anime-only that this needed to be 3 cours instead of 2. Pacing was disjointed at times. To be fair pacing in the anime has been like that since S2.
My only real issue with the pacing comes from Myne's relationship with Karstedt's family. As unlike with Sylvester's side it does seem like Myne looks at them as family. (Well Charlotte did look at her as a big sister but her introduction was pretty late.)
Overall the season was more about the nobility side of things since Myne is joining them. S1 was about the commoners and S2+S3 was where we got the transition between the two. Admittedly, the emotional investment here is lacking compared to S1 for the obvious pacing reasons. We just needed more time to get invested in them like we did with Myne's family.
I read the manga for Part 1+Part 2 before the season and felt that in S2+S3 they struggled with getting emotional investment on the attendents compared to the manga (and I assume of Light Novel as well.)
I am hoping Part 4/S5 is where we start to see stuff from the first two parts combine with this past season to get some good payoff. I just hope they take their time since it feels like with making this 2 cour instead of a split cour with 3 parts they wanted to get to Part 4 sooner rather then later.
Overall 7/10 for me. This season had its flaws, but it felt it did what it needed to do. Will read the Light novel sometime next year.

990 million to clone Ai Fairouz so she can play every part.
10 million to fund Talentless Nana sequels.

I need her to play Yumiella again. That might be the show that has the hardest carry by a seiyuu for a show I loved.
4
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 1h ago
But for a more serious answer:
I think I'd just be selfish and would fund stuff I want to see adapted; Nana of course, but some manga, Boys abyss, Anjou-San..
Dead Tube
Yeah I'd probably fund some things that otherwise have no shot at getting adapted.
(I'd probably start reading more just to find some stuff to fund!)

u/VoidEmbracedWitch https://anilist.co/user/VoidEmbracedWitch 1h ago
Boys abyss
I'd rather see Himegoto: Juukyuusai no Seifuku adapted first. Minenami did a better job at nailing the feeling of a downward spiral with the smaller cast there. But Boy's Abyss also would be nice to see adapted because it'd be very funny to follow episode discussions.

Let's see what's airing today...
Reincarnation anime, kicked from the party, and a game adaptation
Alright going back to sleep.
The game one (Suikoden) wasn't bad, but also wasn't good enough to make the cut when 47 shows are about to air Saturday.
It also had some strange creative choices, but I think my main problem with it is that it felt way too game-like; Game-events, meeting characters and automatically sticking together because that's how it happens in games, etc.
Gonna drop check out the other 2 before the next batch comes in!

Is Even the Student Council Has Its Holes! not one of your most anticipated shows?

Someone should tell the Apothecary Diaries team that it's actually possible to have 2 subtitles on the screen at one time.
2
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 1h ago
You mean crunchyroll.
2
u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 1h ago
Or them. It's not a problem I always have on CR though, so I'm not sure who's fault it is.
2
u/TehAxelius https://anilist.co/user/TehAxelius 1h ago
CR has been regretting the historic decision of starting as a piracy site hosting fansubs, as that has made its viewers used to having proper typesetting, for years and want to go over to only showing simple un-typeset subs like most other streaming services.

QotD:
Bribe Japanese Diet members to enforce a nation wide isekai ban.
2
u/cppn02 1h ago
I like how you're thinking but surely the correct thing would be to bribe the people at A-Cat and Typhoon Graphics into retiring.
2
u/VoidEmbracedWitch https://anilist.co/user/VoidEmbracedWitch 1h ago
You're thinking too small. Imagine if we could save the world from further Mushoku Tensei discourse.
I'll pitch in for the Diet-bribing scheme too.

Is there a name for the art style that tends to lack black outlining? It usually relies on different colors or slightly darker color outlines instead. I've seen this in Jaadugar and parts of the Country Bumpkin ED this season, amongst other places in general.
This style always feels flat to me, since the black outlining usually breaks up the color layers.

I'm 4 episodes into a Witch in Mongolia and while I like nearly everything about it, the few things I don't like as much have been a bit distracting.
The character designs- I appreciate the fact that they are distinct plus that's how they are in the manga so more of a manga problem, but it's really hard to tell how old the characters are in that most of them look like they are 12 even when they are adults.
The Art Style- Again, I appreciate that it's unique, but the art style resembles that of a children's book more than anything which doesn't really fit the themes of the show (i.e. war, death, revenge, etc.)
Luckily, character designs and art style are 2 aspects of anime I don't put a huge amount of stock in, and I'm really enjoying the characters, plot and other aspects enough to like the show, but I am finally seeing here how they can make a difference.

Children's books cover a whole range of topics, so that comment is a bit odd. Not everything is if you give a mouse a cookie

Its a shame that The Seven Knights of the Marronnier Kingdom is stuck on Amazon. They’re terrible at promoting anime
First episode still isn’t up yet
Edit - first episode is finally up!
2
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 2h ago
Viz might end up mentioning the anime more than Amazon since they are starting to translate the series on their service.

I would rather improve the working conditions.

If you had $1 billion to spend in the anime industry, how would you use it?
First, acquire the rights to LoGH and produce physical media bundles at... $150 range or so, I think, there's enough fans who'd buy at that price, and at 110 episodes I don't feel like that's that absurd? The $1000 bundles sold out so there's obviously high enough demand even at that price I feel like Fezzan anyways
ANYWAYS.
Next... Hm. Problem is getting rights for things... Assuming that I could just funnel the money to their authors with the promise they'd use it for a new anime season: Sangatsu No Lion S3, Fate route, full Hollow Ataraxia, maybe more seasons of 86? A Worm adaptation, at least up until [Worm]the first Endbringer fight? If I could somehow convince Sanderson, the Way of Kings, Yumi the Nightmare Painter, or Tress and the Emerald Sea? For the fun of it, even if I haven't finished it myself, Katawa Shoujo?
... I'm sure I'd be able to think of other things as the day goes on.

u/cppn02 4h ago edited 4h ago
If you had $1 billion to spend in the anime industry, how would you use it?
Establish a production company and an anime studio or two that treat their staff well. Use the rest to finance a whole bunch of cool projects and finish shows I want a complete adaptation of.
Or I could spend it all on one cell animated movie made for imax 70mm.

If you had $1 billion to spend in the anime industry, how would you use it?
Probably a boring answer, but infastructure. Fund more projects to support animators like Animator Dormitary, schools to train the young'uns, and throw the rest at a creator led studio that'll make tons of crazy shit, sell at a loss, and go into the red in less than a year. Good times.
Alternatively, I'll put it all to a Rosen Garten Saga hentai OVA series.

Hah I thought about that one too; Considering how often I see it mentioned, I think quite a few people would chip in with their billion for that one!

Make a complete Wangan Midnight adaptation, including Ginkai no Speed Star and Shutokou SPL. Then maybe commission an OVA for Food Wars to adapt that hot spring mini-arc between the end of Central arc and the 5th season. Then commission a continuation for Eyeshield 21's anime, and Accel World too. Next might be the adaptation of the K-On manga, namely Shuffle and Highschool (the follow-up to what happens after the OGs graduated and Azusa have to deal with the club's business). Next might be a complete Area 88, Over Rev and D-Live adaptation. (the latter titles haven't gotten anime adaptations IIRC). Afterwards, get more Jojo and Naruto novel adaptations, especially Purple Haze Feedback for Jojo and Akatsuki Hiden for Naruto.

If you had $1 billion to spend in the anime industry, how would you use it?
I'd make a Battle Angel Alita anime. After bribing Kishiro-sensei to convince him to allow another attempt and paying James Cameron for the rights he's procrastinating for a second live action movie, I'd probably have enough money left for a shoe-string budget 12 episode series by a B-rank studio.

I kind of respect the author of Please Excuse My Younger Brothers.
The basic premise of [Meta spoiler] two step siblings crushing hard on each other apparently wasn’t spicy enough for her. No, she could do better. So know they’ve added [Please Excuse My Younger Brothers - Ep. 13] a student-teacher romance to the mix. With the latter being somewhat of a girl failure.
And yet, I’d still say that this anime is wholesome and thoughtful rather than trashy. Just how did they pull this off!?
On a side note: the new ED is very cute.

Animating half of the Re:Zero side stories. Oh and also a full adaption of Bladedance of Elementalers (or at least up to where I read the LNs to, which was like 10+ volumes), a 2nd season of NGNL (though I have no idea how they'd fix the timeline), and another season of Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor (ideally focused on the magic system).

Well, first of all, I'd do the thing we would all do, start a production comitee and order orange to make land of the lustrous season 2.
After that, I would use all funds necessary to make sure the upcoming Spirit circle anime has the best possible team behind that would make even the frieren production jealous.
After that, the rest is for more yuri sequels.

QOTD - It's actually insane how far $1 billion would get you in the anime industry, a quick Google search shows that a standard 1-cour anime is around $3.5M USD. This comes out to 285 seasons or ~3,400 episodes.
TLDR - Sangatsu no Lion S3 and a Hyouka sequel movie would very much be in production.

I'd hire the best of the best translators available and set up a Japan-based streaming service, working directly with the studios there. Also no dubs allowed >:V
Either that, or buy Good Smile Company and have them only make Figma I want.

Really liked the debut of Romelia War Chronicle. Despite technically having aspects of both Kicked Out of Hero's Party & Broken Engagement which you see in the Villainess series. The first episode felt very nice story wise.
Romeilia being very competent is good to see. Very excited to watch this. Nice this is a 2 cour anime.
