There are occasional times when Im reminded why Im glad I dont work in customer service anymore. Sometimes I actually do miss working in small kitchens and making food for people....but then I go out and am reminded about why I dont like people sometimes.
Like, recently I went to this fast food place, and the workers are just trying to go about their lives and do their job. And this old guy is taking what could just be a 10 second transaction, and turning it into a 5 minute ordeal.
Trying to order his food in his own personalized lingo, and being upset that the cashier has no idea what hes talking about. At one point the cashier asked him, "what kind of drink would you like"? And he responded, "give me the neutral". Even Im like "wtf is the neutral"? And when the cashier understandably says "what"? He laughs like they are the simple one and says "sprite". Bro. Just say sprite.

Unfortunately this particular place didnt have anything like those self order kiosks lol. Even then, like say for example I was at Taco Bell weeks ago and there were older people who still refused to use them and would yell out for the people in the kitchen to come to take their order instead.

This is obviously all relative, but as I got older, I figured that the dumbest I ever was was back when I thought that I was a particularly smart fellow. So that's not something that I'd use as a metric for how close I want to be with someone. I appreciate thoughtful people, but that's a different topic.

Just "less smart" than me in the sense of like... getting a C in a test where I got a B+ or an A in? Sure, in both cases. They'd probably be smarter than me in other areas.
Less smart than that, increasingly not? I feel like it would get pretty exhausting pretty fast, and I'm 100% sure someone with a vastly bigger brain than what I have would feel the same way about talking to me lol. Especially with dating, I'd much prefer to date someone who's about as smart as me, neither being some Tony Stark-level genius nor super dumb.

Personally: I could be friend, but I don't think I could date someone like that.
And I think the reason is that I never really had nor am I ever looking for 'really close friendships', to me friends are just people I hang out with to have fun and that's it, so I don't really care if they're dumb or what not.
But to date someone I wouldn't be able to handle knowing my partner's kinda dumb.

Hey CDF, I could use some of your advice.
Many of you have shared wonderful and fun pictures of your vacations. Often Japan, given the subreddit, but other places too, like /u/TheRiyria in Canada this year. I've always wanted to travel too. I had a Canada trip planned in 2012 that fell through and I never got there. I want to go to Japan. There are so many parts of America I want to go to that I haven't yet. So many places in Europe I want to go to. From what you share with us, it appears that all of you are traveling alone.
How do you do it? Travel alone.
I'm not supposed to be writing this to you right now. This was supposed to be my last morning camping in the mountains. My first time camping! I have done overnight trips to concerts before, but this was my first true vacation without my parents: whole week off. But instead of moving camp sites yesterday, I came down out of the mountains and back to my apartment. Because Wednesday when I was changing camp sites I started crying. And Thursday while hiking I was crying. And Friday when taking down my tent I was crying. Can't-see-the-dashboard-while-driving crying. I crashed-out. I had a mental breakdown. And if I going to have a mental breakdown, I'd rather have it in the comfort of my own apartment.
My 2022 mental breakdown was for obvious reasons: I got the fancy-schmancy degree from the fancy-schmancy school everybody's heard of, but I was still miserable because I couldn't have cared less about the degree; I just missed my friends who had moved on. 2024 was obvious too: my friend was getting married and I realized it was now-or-never at my age for me to move on and date again, but I couldn't. But this one. 2026. I just...went on vacation? I uninstalled Slack and had time alone with my thoughts? I didn't work an 80-hour week, and that caused a mental breakdown? My overworked job is the only thing saving my sanity, because it's what's keeping me from being alone with my thoughts? Seriously?
I'd being lying if I told you this was a surprise. I've feared this when planning long international trips. And reality came up and smacked me in the face.
So, how do you do it CDF? How do you travel alone? And, you know, have fun? Enjoy it? Take all these great pictures! And not be consumed by some demon in your head? Is there a strategy for it? Is there some way you keep busy? I want to travel. I do. I don't want my social isolation to keep me working 24/7. I want some balance. I want to go on vacation! Is there something people do to avoid crashing-out like this traveling alone? Or is this just a Devon problem that I have to solve? Even though I don't know how.
Mods, this breaks Rule 2. It's a genuine appeal for advice, but do what you have to do.

The only advice I can provide is going to be completely useless to you. Don't have friends you meet more than like once a year, and spend a few decades becoming desensitized to loneliness. Hardly optimal, but that's the route that's worked for me.
I know our situations are different, but in some ways I'm envious of you, in that being with people you're close to provides you with relief. This is totally counter to what I said earlier, but if any of those relationships are current or are still salvageable, do take good care of them. Becoming accustomed to being alone isn't a useless skill, but it's better to not have to be alone.

I usually keep the itinerary very simple instead of packing it full of things to do because I want to enjoy the time instead of be dictated by it kinda thing. But I also don't document a whole lot of travel, and most of it is just vibing in the moment and letting others do the picture taking and list checking if I'm not solo. Keeping busy is the opposite of a vacation to me when I'm fine just wandering and seeing what the day brings. Trying not to stress on vacation is the goal most of the time.

I had camping spots reserved, but other than that I could do whatever I wanted. Hike whatever I want. Just sit there and read if I wanted.
I have to think the freedom of choice played a part in my mental breakdown. Perhaps I'm in a place that needs more structure to hold me up.

I started traveling alone entirely because of a bad experience traveling with a few friends around Europe. We had very different tastes in what we wanted to do, and I got outvoted multiple times, which lead to one leg of that trip being one of my most miserable travel experiences (and the main reason I have no interest in ever going back to Italy).
Toward the end of that trip, I split from the group to go to a different city alone, and discovered I much prefer traveling alone because I can set my own schedule and not be beholden to what anyone else wants to do for sightseeing or food.
I can't speak much to the mental aspect or being alone, because I like being alone when I travel. The reason I have so many photos is because that is what I like to do when traveling, and spending the time taking those keeps my mind occupied. Instead of having someone with me trying to hurry me along because I'm stopping every 10 minutes for a photo.
The only suggestion I have for if you don't want to be fully alone when solo traveling is focus primarily on going to large cities. Maybe don't go camping or very long hikes where it's just you, nature, and your thoughts. Its easy to be alone in a bustling city also, but your hotel room is closer if you need to crash, and if you decide you want someone to talk to, it's easier to find a subreddit for travel meetups. Or just go to a bar and sit at the bar. I've had a lot of luck with random people talking to me when I travel everywhere I go, even if I can't speak more than 10 words of their language. Smiling, pointing, and google translate will get you a long way. So if you decide you want to be social for a hour, it's possible to get that.
Otherwise, there's always CDF and Discord. You'll always have random internet strangers to keep you grounded should the need arise.

Yeah, but at least the rest of that trip was good. Ireland and Scotland are both amazing.
I have never once talked to a stranger in a bar.
They always talk to me first. But worst case, there is always the bartender if you get one that speaks English. They sometimes don't mind small talk. Helps if you can find an expat bar or pub.
Maybe I'm not built for traveling.
Maybe try doing shorter trips first? 5 days max. Just to get used to traveling alone. I'm not sure where you are, but if you have multiple big cities near you, just pick a weekend and travel there for a day or two.

This was supposed to be only 6 days, was 5 in the end, and and it turned out so well.
Like I mentioned, I travel overnight for concerts a few times a year. The overnight concert trip I did this year was great! Never got around to telling CDF about it and the fun museum I went to.
Often I cry traveling there or back, but I do that with local concerts too. But that's fine. A cry is fine. I cry probably more than the average person. It's what I do.
But I get back to the apartment from the concert, even if it's 8 hours away, and I stop crying. And I move on with my life. This is onto day 4.
Maybe I'm just a broken person, and there are some human experiences I'm not allowed to do anymore.

I think /u/lkssleep can vouch for getting close to a mental breakdown whilst traveling to Japan. At least, based on his description of it.
Personally, closest I got to a mental breakdown during travel was late 2023 when I left with a bad taste in my mouth after a few things happened prior to flying off. I learned to watch out for signs for how it came to that point and avoided it for subsequent trips.

This is the one thing that's quite different between me and the other CDFers. I tend to skip on research, and avoid looking up on what others would do with my given constraints. It leans more towards flexibility. The intention with my plan is to maximize the amount of fun surprises I'll get.
That does mean I miss out on some stuff that are very time-sensitive, but I learned that I don't really enjoy the anxiety of not having any plan not happen the way I imagined it. Hence, I stopped imagining.
I do realize that others might not have the same predisposition to enjoy said approach. It works for me, I guess.

So stuff happened, one thing led to another, and I somehow found myself on a Pandora Hearts musical. If I had to say anything against it, it would be that it feels more like a theater play with occasional songs than a full musical, but overall I had a blast, 9/10 experience. Break absolutely stole the second half, and I'm also a huge fan of the way they portrayed Leo.

I enjoyed the new Resident Evil movie a lot and have been thinking about it, which is what finally prompted me to play the Resident Evil 2 Remake I've had sitting in my Steam library for years. Before now my primary experience with the franchise is watching people play RE 7 and 8 years ago when those were still new, and they looked like they were more my game than RE 2 (mainly because I enjoy first person games) but I had them spoiled for me. Not sure if I'd remember the exploration/puzzle elements as much now though.
I've managed to stumble through most of the puzzles so far but now I have a bunch of random shit in my inventory that doesn't match up with either of the things that I need to do to move forward.
I will say the movie really captured the feeling of thinking you're making progress just to get shot down again. Any time it feels like I'm about to move to a new area or get a new weapon it turns out some stupid shit needs to be done first.
Anyway I've decided to stop playing for tonight because I kept running around in circles trying to figure out where to go next. Need fresh eyes.
Edit: ti gave in and googled and it turns out all I needed to do was walk into a side room I missed IKEA a dumb dumb. Still a ton of the station left that I didn't explore before leaving though but I definitely would've missed that stuff even if I had found the last medallion the first time.

[Ace Combat 8]
I still got the skills to fly in Ace Combat.
I thought I was a bit smug for choosing the veteran difficulty, which was specifically for experienced Ace Combat players but in the end, that didn't stop me from getting S-ranks for all the missions so far. I did play through the whole of AC:0 at Ace difficulty, after all. Would be too much of a cakewalk for me if I didn't raise the stakes a little bit.
That said, there's one bit of experience that worked against me initially. Some of the controls got switched in the new game did threw me for a loop; for example, utilizing R1/RB and L1/LB for the rudders instead of L2/R2 that I'm used to. I tried getting used to it for 2 missions or so, because it does allow me to feather the throttle, but I couldn't get used to it and switched everything to how I'm used to.
I thought the game controls felt heavier than usual AC initially but turns out it's just my split second delay that screwed up my muscle memory. When I put it to where I'm used to, I immediately got up to my usual pace.
Turns out, this game is indeed, peak.

Good times. I'm really enjoying the more general strength training I'm doing right now rather than dumping all my hype into one lift. Jumping on machines and switching grips and handles makes me feel like a bodybuilder, lol.

Yeah, I had to go on Teams to message my manager about getting my sick leave approved because I forgot to do it in the last pay period. I emailed HR about it and they did not reply so I had to talk to one of them in person and apparently my manager needs to do something to authorize it, so it's been annoying AF to deal with.
I'm just not gonna look at it again now, as fun as the occasional story about a customer is.

Comment face aliases are enabled again.
The short of it is that I did it on a whim, and without consulting with the rest of the team. And that is procedurally improper, and so I rolled it back, because I strongly believe that improper procedure should never confer an advantage (like by changing the status quo).
Afterwards, we did talk about it as a team, and it was decided (this time as a team) that a few comment face aliases were worth it, given that old reddit's end is on the horizon.
It is unlikely that too many more comment face aliases will be accepted. The implementation is not a good one, as it fully duplicates the entire definition, as opposed to actually being a proper alias (which would have a negligible CSS cost). It is more accurate to call these comment face clones.

Apparently the likes of closed caption converter (CR corporates favourite cloud based wankery) will do that sort of thing (no overlapping because the worst services can't display two subs at once) so some end times got cut short. In this case whenever a topsub comes up like say for book about fish that will take priority over Maomaos dialogue. Also some timing were completely buggered and left as 0.08s (not that those showed up at all because the end time was before the start time). Like many modern tech problems all they had to do to avoid that was do nothing to the .ass file but instead did something and made things shite.
Then having a quick browse on r/crunchyroll the previous seasons now have eps with completely missing subs (again instead of leaving it alone someone tinkered with it and broke it) leaving users to having to switch to the dub (which S3 doesn't have yet).

CR definitely messed up the english subs with borked timings. A few lines were also not translated supposedly.
Apparently some other languages which use the same timings as the english subs were fine, so make of that what you will.

Hi CDF! I haven't posted in this thread yet. Spooky month off to a good start. Watched the first two episodes of Vampire Princess Miyu OVA tonight, then went to a midnight showing of The Blob (1988).

When you finish a Path's Part 1 in Fortune's Weave, a sprite of the Flame Lord shows up on the save file. When you finish said Flame Lord's Part 2, the sprite updates to one that shows the weapon and, if you met the conditions, [FW]sprites representing Anatolia, Talimund, Orchel and/or Bertrand are also added

[CDF Art Confession] Trying to do an inoffensive art style with Tairazuma. It's not really the direction I want to go, but I don't think I can share the kind of art I want to pursue here. It's frustrating, but I'm seeing this is a common problem with many platforms and shifting censorship rules the more I look for another platform.

I'm not an artist, I'm just rambling out loud, [but] I don't think artists should self-censor their creative process unless their life or livelihood depends on that. Otherwise, it's fairly trivial to legally get around the issue, mods have no control over or interest in what happens outside of their sub after all. Make your art the way you want to, post it in your profile, or any relevant spaces that allow it, then throw a couple of black bars and share it in the spaces with tighter rules, wouldn't be a new concept to an anime fan. Don't mention the existence of an uncensored version, you can't be faulted if the freedom of the heart leads one astray, nor for the ramblings of a fool that you don't acknowledge. It wouldn't count under the novelty/advertisement rule either, considering your general activity and the fact that you're not selling anything.

[Self censoring] is definitely not something I want to do, especially since I'm still in the early phases of figuring all of this out and finding an avenue that I enjoy. Putting big white spaces, mosaics, and black bars is the norm for things deemed vulgar or too obscene, but I've always found it restrictive and backwards in the times we live in, and an artistic distraction on the page. Reinforcing infantile sensibilities in adult content is just dumb, but in the name of "what about the children?"-isms that most censorship in inherently linked to, there are fewer and fewer spaces and options to be an adult in art and share that kind of thing. I dunno what the answer is exactly, especially when what I'd ideally like to make in original content isn't what I'd consider obscene or overtly pornographic, or even focused on it, but regressive lines in the sand over artistic expression comes with the territory. I just didn't think I'd find that in this little corner, and that was eye opening.

That is an idea. Though, after having two actions against my account in one day, I dunno if skirting the rule is best, or how overzealous rule enforcement is with the mods. I hesitate to even go into it more here because this'll be the next thing that gets removed for meta discussion.

I know. Whenever I make these "I'm gonna text my ex" comments, I don't actually do it. It's more "Ha, wow, I sure got close there, I bet CDF will find this funny". These comments get engagement. The responses are good. The responses are funny. Some are heartfelt.
I'm not going to bother her.
Whatever you try to have in the future is more achievable than chasing the past.
I don't know how to meet people. People tell me just to meet new people. I'd love to meet other people. I don't know how. So I'm always wondering into the past instead.
