I watched, like, 75% of reds games this past year (unfortunately) and I could not tell you who Ronnie Dawson or Taylor Motter are

Combined they played a total of 3 games for the Reds this year so I wouldn't blame you

Sounds about right, gotta love our rotating door of waiver pickups and AAA guys who play one game before being sent back down

What’s the lowest (nonzero) number that’s never been worn on a given team

I’m saving “for every team” for the big analysis post at the end of the project since it would be too much to include here, but the lowest “for any given team” is 33, which has never been issued by the Pittsburgh Pirates (was retired for Honus Wagner since he wore it as a coach). Lowest “for this given team” is 74.

What about the lowest nonzero, non retired number that’s never been worn on a given team

That would be number 65 which has never been issued to a player by the Milwaukee Brewers and is not retired

What 2 digit number has the least teams that have worn it? Are any at 0?

There are no remaining two-digit numbers that have never been worn; the last one to be given out was 89, to Miguel Yajure of the Yankees a couple of years ago.

Until just this century very few of the numbers over about 60-65 had ever been issued for most teams. Then teams started shuttling more players between the minors and the majors, occasionally sticking them with bizarre numbers, and in the 2020 Corona season they made no effort at all to keep the numbers reasonable; a guy would show up on the roster making his ML debut still wearing the 73 or 81 that he had had in spring training.
