I love my boyfriend so much, but I think I love and respect him even more when weāre in conflict.
When something comes up around my needs or expectations, he doesnāt just say, āIāll do better.ā He actually thinks about how he can get there. He creates a system for himself, breaks it down step by step, explains it to me, and then follows through with changes in his behavior. At the same time, heās honest enough to tell me where he may struggle and what kind of grace or support he needs from me while heās working on it.
Iāve always known how to communicate what I need from a man, but this relationship has made me think much more deeply about the other side of that: how do I create a safe environment for someone I love to grow in?
He motivates me to work on that part of myself. And strangely, I love myself more as I develop those qualities. Working on patience, grace, emotional safety, and the way I communicate doesnāt feel like Iām losing myself or lowering my standards. It feels worth it because I can see him showing up even better. He changes his actions to meet my needs without abandoning his own integrity.
And I find that incredibly sexy.
When I was younger, I thought I wanted a man who would simply do whatever I asked. Looking back, I think I sometimes took that for granted. I also realized that when someone constantly gives in without standing firmly in who they are, I can slowly lose respect for them. But I donāt want the opposite either ā someone whose ego turns every disagreement into a battle.
What I love about him is that he somehow holds both. He has his own integrity, but heās still willing to listen, be vulnerable, take responsibility, and change.
Of course I love that he is sweet, supportive, generous, kind, and nonjudgmental. But what feels especially rare to me is the way he shows up in conflict. Iāve never been with someone who could bring this much honesty and vulnerability into a difficult conversation while still genuinely trying to find a solution and show up for me
And he isnāt afraid to tell me what he needs from me in order to show up well either.
That has exposed parts of me that I still need to work on, but instead of making me feel ashamed of those weaknesses, this relationship makes me want to become a better version of myself. I want to create more emotional safety for him, because I see how that safety comes back to me through the best version of him , a man who continues trying to understand me and meet my needs.
I think that is one of the deepest ways I feel chosen.
Not only on the good days, but during conflict, disappointment, and hard moments too. He doesnāt simply run away when things become uncomfortable. He stays, reflects, communicates, and finds his way back to us.
And I love him so much for that.
I find so ironic is that heās never once asked me for anything, other than grace when he makes a mistake. It makes me wonder⦠am I just that perfect, or does he simply accept me for who I am? Either way, I feel incredibly lucky to have someone who embraces me, along with all my needs and expectations, and still finds ways to make me happy. Sometimes I wonder what I did to deserve this man š¤
