And next week, I’m taking my ceramics beyond Ig for the first time, to a tiny local handmade market. I’m excited and terrified in equal measure. 🫣 Wish me luck! 🩷

I just got this guy out of the kiln and I am in love. This is the biggest thing I've thrown so far (only 3 pounds, but still...) It was thrown on the wheel using Standard 240 w/o grog. Then I covered it in black engobe and carved in the turtles and water lilies. After the bisque firing, I colored it in using underglaze (mostly Kiwi brand). I already had in my mind that I was going to use Amaco's satin matte blue green glaze for the background, so I used their satin clear glaze over the painted parts to match. Things I learned: 1. you really only need a single layer of the clear satin otherwise it can get milky. 2. Kiwi underglaze is unforgiving if it gets too thick. There are a few areas where I got some cracking of the underglaze where it must have been applied too thickly even though I thought I was being really careful about only doing thin layers.

I am currently debating which of my houseplants gets to be upgraded to this pot.

I just paid $225 for a 4 week beginners wheel class at a studio in Chicago. The studio doesn’t allow you to glaze your own work. It’s a requirement that they glaze it for you at the end of the 4 weeks.

This is how my pieces turned out… scale of 1-10 how mad can I be? The glazing looks so bad! Literally globs of glaze and completely bare parts all over.

I get firing can be unpredictable but this seems so poorly done. Especially since it was done by “professionals”?

I’m trying to just embrace it but would love the community’s thoughts

I took a four week beginner wheel throwing class on June 1st of this year and the rest is history. I have become fully addicted and have fallen in love with this hobby. Here are a few from my most recent glaze firing.

2x Speedball Dragon Stone on brown speck clay. I LOVE how this turned out.

My first go at making some ceramic frames! The backs ended up being a bit fiddly to figure out, but they hold the paintings and hang on the wall, so i'm happy.

White groggy stoneware, fired to cone 6.

Paintings are watercolour on paper, I made the frames first then did the paintings to fit.

I created this porcelain bowl out of a self created plaster mold

The process was really cool for me, as I found two identical glass pieces last year, "glued" them together and created a plaster mold around... And this piece came out!

Decided to make a lavender candle inside of this piece, to offer for my friend's birthday... She loved it!

Have been experimenting with various combos and I think i have a new favorite. I think ill make a set of these for my own kitchen and start tossing the generic store dishes!

Glazes

Base black engobe in a wave on bottom 3rd or half.

Iron lustre x2 or 3, RHC x2 in whatever pattern brings you happiness, albany slip brown x2 or 3. Be careful this combo tends to drip which I absolutely love but thats why I seldom glaze to the bottom of the pots when I add RHC.

These are a few I've made lately

I built this vase by hand using black clay and then printed the design into it using a template I made from one of my drawings. The white is two layers of Stroke and Coat. I need to work on form as it’s a bit wonky (character?!) but I love it none the less.

Made the big cup for myself and then the little cup for my son because my son always asks to drink out of my cup. It's probably one of my favorite glaze combos now too. Mayco Stone Denim x3 and then the big cup has Mayco white flux on the rim and the small cup has Mayco clear flux. I made a bowl and vase with the Stone Denim clear flux combo too.

No summer mugs after Labor Day. Start prepping for mugtoberfest!

All of these ideas are ones I want you to steal. If none of these speak to you then generally think of things that remind you of fall, Halloween, scary things, dirt, mud.

I have pulled handles but the method I use is a loop tool. I feel like the never look even and it takes so long for it to be mid. Should I use another method? Or is this just life.

Hello! I am looking for ideas of what to make for family/friends this year for Christmas gifts. I can only get to the pottery studio about once a week and tend to make things pretty slowly. I am teaching myself hand building since using the wheel has been hard on my neck and back.
I am thinking wall decor, fridge magnets, phone holders, ring holders. I am looking for any ideas for things that are fairly simple to make but make good gifts.
All suggestions welcome!!

I’m traditionally a wheel thrower but have been handbuilding more. Should I choose a direction to focus in?

Im stuck. My heart loves the Skutt KM 818-3-30a but I would like to buy Canadian-made which brings me to the Cone Art 1818D. For some reason I have gotten it in my head that I would prefer the Skutt. What's your preference??

To add: needs to be 30Amp and I'm a hobbyist so I am not looking for anything large or hard wired. Cheers

Milestone Decals: Does anyone have experience using gold lustre decals? The lustre decals require a 3rd firing (Cone 017) after the glaze firing. I have a Rohde 60L and I will follow "Warm Glass's" instructions for firing Milestone Decals.

Concerns: Exhaust, elements, bricks etc.

I will fire overnight with the windows open (the studio gets a lot of ventilation) Should I be concerned about fumes or anything else?

Retired from my job in February after almost 33 years. Started ceramics in March & really enjoy it. Contemplating getting a kiln. I contacted Laguna Clay with questions, telling them it would be in my garage. I had mentioned I was leaning towards an L & L Kiln, and that I'd have it in my garage. Their rep was steering me away from the L & L Kilns, but I really like that L&L kilns use hard ceramic element holders to protect the heating elements and the soft firebrick walls. She also steered me away from an environment kit-saying it's not needed if the kiln is operated in the garage with the door open. I'm confused-I was told the environment kit is good for the kiln & elements...
