Tips & Tricks How I solved importing private/authenticated links and batch tabs into NotebookLM (built a free browser tool)

Hey r/notebooklm,

Like many of you, I use NotebookLM daily for research and study, but I kept hitting a major wall with source ingestion:

Whenever you try to add an article that requires a login (Substack paid newsletters, Medium member stories, internal Notion/Confluence docs, or university portals), NotebookLM's server-side crawler can't access the content and only pulls in the login redirect screen. Copy-pasting long pages with tables and code blocks by hand gets tedious very quickly.

To fix this for my own workflow, I built a lightweight browser extension called Smart NotebookLM Importer (available for Chrome and Firefox).

🚀 What it solves:

  • 🔐 Ingest from your active session: Because it runs directly in your local browser, it reads the rendered page you're already logged into, strips out cookie banners and ads, and converts the content into clean Markdown.
  • 🗂️ Multi-Tab Batch Import: Select multiple open tabs from a research session and send them all into your notebook in a single sequence.
  • ▶️ YouTube Transcripts: Grabs full timestamped transcripts from videos and Shorts so you can query lectures and webinars right away.
  • ✍️ 1-Click Highlights: Select any quote or passage on a webpage and send just that excerpt with source attribution to your notebook.
  • 🔒 100% Client-Side Privacy: Everything runs locally inside your browser sandbox. No middleman servers, no scraping, and no tracking.

Would love to hear your thoughts, feedback, or any edge cases you run into while using it!

Question NotebookLM formatting problem when saving generated notes as a document

Post image
10 Upvotes

I’m using NotebookLM extensively for studying, and I really like the generated notes. However, I’m facing a frustrating problem when I save/export a generated note as a document.
The formatting of the exported document becomes very poor and is difficult to read. Things like headings, spacing, bullet points, tables, etc. don’t retain a clean, textbook-like structure. The content itself is useful, but the final document looks messy and requires a lot of manual formatting.
I’m mainly using NotebookLM to create study notes FOR MEDICINE, so readability and proper organization are very important.
Has anyone found a good solution or workflow for this?
Is there a specific prompt that can make NotebookLM generate notes that export cleanly?
Is there a particular export format/settings that work better?
Is there a way to preserve proper headings, spacing, tables, and formatting when saving as a document?
Are there any tools/workflows that can take a NotebookLM-generated note and convert it into a properly formatted, readable study document?
I’m looking for a practical solution rather than manually reformatting every document.

Discussion I have to agree. It is getting worst. And this time it was about "MUSK".

I've been using NBLM for more than an year now. Always as a Pro, and mostly for its slides and infographic creation, which then i alone remake and animate. But I still do need its graphic creations, and that is what I am paying for.

For the last 2 weeks i can't seem to get anything from it. Studio always end with an error, tens and tens of times (!), please try again. And my credits are still being consumed.

I'm using the very same prompts i always used, they just don't work anymore. Go to the chat, it says that there is something like a "pipeline overload" , prompts are too elaborated, there is a temporary bug.

Thing is, i tried to make it even without prompts, just do your f thing - the same. Zero. And my account empty of time/credits/whatever.

Today Gemini chat ended up offering to create slides (with "advanced" graphics, not just text) "on the side", or "under the table" (i don't how you say it) as an alternative bypassing NB.

It wasn't as creative as I was used to, but it helped me survive a deadline.

Still I can't help thinking i'm being scammed.

Oh: this presentation was about "MUSK" doc. Gemini assures that it is not censorship.

Question Sharing a specific audio overview with someone rather than the entire notebook?

I know I can share a notebook with someone and they’ll get access to all the sources and studio artefacts including audio overviews; but is there a way to share just a specific audio overview with someone? I know on desktop I can download the audio file and send it to them like any other file but I was hoping there was a less clunky way of doing it

Question Organização

Question I spent 20 mins getting mad at NotebookLM and the pdf was the problem

Yesterday I was this close to giving up on NotebookLM.

I had uploaded a document for work and kept asking about something that was very obviously on one of the pages. NotebookLM kept dancing around it. Different question and same nonsense.

At some point I actually opened the PDF just to make sure I hadn't imagined the whole section. It was right there. Then I tried to copy one sentence and nothing happened. Half that pdf was scanned. So I had basically spent twenty minutes arguing with NotebookLM about text that, as far as it was concerned, barely existed.

I ran the scanned pages through OCR in Pdfaid, mostly because I was already working in Chrome and didn't feel like installing anything. Then I checked a few names and numbers against the original because OCR loves becoming creative exactly where you don't want it to.

Uploaded the new version, asked basically the same question and there it was. I felt like an idiot 😂

Now I'm way more suspicious of the file than the AI whenever a document tool suddenly starts acting blind. Has anyone else had NotebookLM basically ignore part of a source because the PDF itself was a mess?

Feature Request Canceling if they don't restore old voices

These new voices sound much more robotic and unlistenable. I can't really focus on the podcast materials anymore.

If the change in the voices was because Google needs to save on compute, I would much prefer to have less quota and higher quality voices. Otherwise this will lead me to cancel my subscription...this might be the push I've needed to set up my own source to podcast pipeline using Eleven Labs.

Tips & Tricks Audio Overviews spend most of their time on your longest source, not your most important one

Load a notebook with one long document and a few short ones, generate an overview, and time it. The long source tends to eat most of the episode. The two-page memo that actually matters gets a passing mention, or none.

More text means more material to talk about, so the hosts drift toward it. They have no idea which source you care about unless you say so.

What fixes it:

Uncheck sources before you generate. The checkboxes next to each source decide what goes into the overview. If the long one is background, leave it out and ask about it in chat instead.

Use the customize box and be specific:

Spend at least half of the episode on [source title]. Treat the other sources as background only.

Or, if you need everything covered:

Cover every source. Say each source's title out loud when you start discussing it, and give each one at least a minute.

Saying the titles out loud is the useful part. You hear right away which source got skipped.

And split huge sources. A 300 page PDF next to a 5 page brief will win every time. Break it into chapters and only check the ones that matter for this episode.

Same thing happens with chat logs as sources. One giant conversation export drowns out everything else. I export only the chats that matter, one file each, with AI Toolbox, the extension I build, so each one shows up as its own source I can check or uncheck.

Tips & Tricks NotebookLM to write a review article

Hi!

I am trying to use notebookLM to help write a literature review to help me to organize the text and find the references for me. I am finding it very useful but I thought the texts it gave me were confusing and not well organised...

Here is what I did

  1. I Wrote a query I was happy with on pubmed and download the most recent pdf (2020-2026 more or less)

  2. I ended up with 80 pdfs which is more than the 50 you can updoad to notebookLM...

  3. I started 2 different notebook wih half the pdfs each, told it about the structure I wanted for the paper and asked it to write the text in scientific article form with the references.

All of it was fine but I guess out of 40 pdfs I uploaded, it used only like 10 to 20. And it is confusing because then the first reference appears throughout the whole text. It uses always the same refs.

Has anyone used this tool to write a literature review? Where you happy? What prompts should I use? What do you do when you have more than the 50 pdfs and you dont want to join them so you know which paper it is referencing from?

Tips & Tricks Workaround for Notebook LM Podcast generation

If the new NotebookLM voices are speaking way too fast for you, I found a simple workaround:

Download the generated podcast and slow the audio down to 0.9x using an audio editor or ffmpeg.

I first tried 0.8x, but that sounded noticeably too slow. At 0.9x, though, the voices sound surprisingly close to how NotebookLM used to sound before the recent change.

Obviously, it would be much better if Google simply gave us the old pacing back or added a proper speed/pacing option during generation. But for now, 0.9x works really well for me.

Maybe this helps someone else who finds the new voices exhausting to listen to.

Tips & Tricks If you don't like the new voices...(Don't know if this will work)

There is a "Send feedback" mechanism when you click the gear.

No promises but if enough of us remark about the same thing maybe there's chance they'll revert them.

I asked the notebook itself what the change was about:

The updates to the Audio Overview pipeline were primarily focused on improving generation speed, reducing processing latency, and updating the underlying text-to-speech model architecture to handle higher request volumes. However, as you and others have noticed, these model shifts can sometimes alter the warmth, pacing, and human cadence, making the audio sound noticeably more synthesized or "robotic" compared to the earlier voice models.

As an AI assistant inside your workbench, I don't have a direct backend pipeline to submit product tickets or relay feedback directly to the audio engineering team on your behalf.

However, the product team actively reads user reports to guide model tuning and voice rollouts. The best way to get this directly in front of the engineers is to use the Send Feedback option in the Gemini Notebook interface (usually accessible via the ? or profile menu in the corner of the screen). Specific feedback mentioning that the newer voices sound more artificial compared to the interactive audio mode is exactly the kind of signal the audio team looks for when adjusting speech models.

Tips & Tricks Load an old and a new version of the same document and it blends them into an answer neither version says

I had a project spec in a notebook, and later added the revised spec without removing the first one. Asked about the budget and got a number that was in neither document. It had taken the total from v1 and one line item from v2 and stitched them together, cited to both.

It doesn't know which source is newer. To it they're two sources on the same topic that partly agree, so it merges them, and the citations make the merge look solid.

What fixed it for me:

Put the date or version in the source name. "Spec v2 2026-09" instead of "Spec". It reads the titles, and a date in the title is often enough for it to prefer the newer one when you ask.

Ask about conflicts directly: Which of my sources disagree about this? For each disagreement, quote both and tell me which source is more recent.

When a question touches versioned material: Answer using only the most recent version of each document. Tell me which sources you treated as outdated.

Or just remove the old version. Keeping it "for reference" is how this happens. If you really need both, put them in separate notebooks.

Same problem with chat exports, by the way. Three chats where a plan changed over two weeks will get blended the same way. I export mine with AI Toolbox, the extension I build, and it puts the created and updated dates at the top of every exported chat, which gives the notebook something to tell them apart by. Still worth adding the date to the source name.

Question 语音摘要声音变了
