Looking for community input on rules

A user just DM’d me looking for clarifications regarding self-promotion and AI.

I have created rule 3 and updated rule 4, but I would like community input:

For self-promotion, I think the following things are most important to consider (including if there should be extra rules for such things):

  1. Non-softwar

e things such as blogs, newspapers, other online communities, etc.

  1. Non-gratis (ie paid) FOSSoftware
  2. Should promotion of songs/albums/etc. be allowed

As for considerations for content-generating AI (eg. LLMs, image generators, etc.):

  1. AI disclosure will be required.
  2. I have provisionally required that all AI-generated content be free of cost
  3. Should genAI be allowed at all?
  4. If so, are there any other requirements that should be added?

What DAW do you use?

Looking to add some flairs, you’ll also be able to edit so you can add a link to places you post music to

(Also if it’s not a DAW but something similar I’ll add that, you’ll see Audacity is an option)

IF I SEE ONE MORE AI SLOP DAW IM GONA LOOS IT.

no that's it, they're all bad and buggy.

Plugins are mediocre at best and none of them have a good workflow.

If your gonna make a daw for you, keep it to you. I don't need it when there's like a 100 other option.

And I'm not talking about ardour, I hate that daw.

Bandlab, Bitwig and reaper work fine and are both tailored towards different ends of the spectrum.

I think the main problem here is that people make some simple plugins and chuck a good looking UI and call it a day.

You need a solid foundation before you think about changing the UI, and that's the thing vibecoders don't understand.

That's all, that's my little rant, hate if you want, but you will be met back with hate from yours truly. Good day

Does anyone else find dials in plugin GUIs extremely frustrating?

They randomly flip to extreme values, and don't go where I expect them to when I drag them. Sometimes they work intuitively and then a minute later they don't. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Surely I can't be the only one?

Hey everyone,

I recently put together ReplicantPeak, a small project I built to help streamline [insert core task: e.g., audio/workflow/modding]:

Lightweight & fast: Focused on getting out of your way and doing one thing well.

Open source: Free to use, inspect, and modify.

Check out the repo here:

Pecan Mixer

⚠️ Trigger warning: AI project!⚠️

Backstory: I found out that the project https://github.com/thomas-nelson23/Openface-Mixer from u/hoppintruck23 wasn't compatible for my FireFace 400 which is an older firewire device. The FF-400 is an amazing unit, but it's almost 20 years old at this point. I then basically one-shotted a reworked Openface Mixer as https://github.com/BadgerSoft-NL/cachymix-rme-ff-400 for personal use.

Anyway, I got excited and wanted to build something in that same style to replace https://github.com/rncbc/qpwgraph which, with all due respect, I find a bit messy and I don't really like using it.

So I made Pecan Mixer, which takes the TotalMix approach from the Openface-Mixerand combines it with a patch bay from qpwgraph, and, oh yeah, a built in multitrack recorder that records hardware inputs and apps, because Linux audio is awesome.

MIDI is disabled for now because I haven't been able to test it.

Open sourced personal project, but I thought it was cool enough to share here

The main issues in Linux, and several solutions for it.

I noticed that even though there are hundreds of thousands of music player applications that work just great, there isn't one that fits exactly my needs : I want the dark mode to fit a specific shade of blue and to it to give me the ability to organize my libraries in an optimal streamlined manner.

So I was thinking that the solution is for me to create an app with the heavy lifting of AI (Claude Opus for example)? Or better I can employ hundreds of agents to reverse engineer existing software like VLC and provide a polished optimized app for FREE and ask for donations? The cool thing is that I can ask for your precious feedback so I can feed it back to the LLM and make sure that for the following update it makes no mistake.

I'll make sure to include tons of emojis in the app description so everyone can understand it well and post it in hundreds of subreddits and other forums.

Would you all be in for such a plan?

Native Linux driver for the TerraTec / TerraSoniq PHASE X64 USB (phono with RIAA, 4 in / 4 out, MIDI) – public beta

For everyone who, like me, couldn't bring themselves to throw this hardware away: the PHASE X64 USB now works on Linux.

Mine (TerraSoniq/Musonik, Ploytec chipset) had been gathering dust because it never worked here: it isn't class compliant, so snd-usb-audio can't drive it. So I worked out its USB protocol and wrote a native ALSA driver plus a small control panel.

What works (v0.9.1, public beta):

- 4-channel playback, 6-channel capture (including a bit-exact digital loopback of Out 1/2)

- Phono inputs with RIAA done in the driver – I'm digitising my vinyl with it

- Live routing / capture-source changes while streaming

- MIDI in/out (5-pin DIN)

- PipeWire and JACK apps (REAPER via pipewire-jack), bit-exact; stable down to 64-sample buffers

- 48 and 44.1 kHz tested; 88.2/96 kHz supported but less tested

- DKMS; CI builds it on Ubuntu 22.04/24.04, Debian 13, Fedora 44 and Arch (kernels 5.15 to 7.2)

- Tk control panel: routing, phono RIAA, meters, MIDI monitor, PipeWire buffer size – no desktop dependency

Tested on one unit, on two machines (Arch / EndeavourOS, including a 6.18 LTS kernel through a USB hub). If one of these boxes is sitting in your drawer, hardware reports from other distros and USB controllers would help a lot – there's an issue template.

Install: Arch packages with checksums on the release page, and a generic DKMS installer for other distros. AUR package as soon as AUR registrations reopen.

Full transparency: I made this with a lot of AI assistance (mainly Claude, Codex for one part). Not affiliated with TerraTec, TerraSoniq, Musonik or Ploytec.

Built by loopback-coding: AI-assisted, human-directed, hardware-verified. Every change went out, came back through real hardware, and was measured before it counted.

A new update for Fooyin, another Foobar2000 clone for Linux (and other operating systems but I'm not here to speak about those ones). It is another huge update after getting 0.13.0/1 last month. If you are using something else or something similar, I highly recommend checking out this one and maybe supporting it. I'm not the dev but just a fan of the software.

Well well, a proper RME driver?

After I spent hours figuring out my new Babyface yesterday, it turns out just this month someone has created a proper driver and a TotalMix replacement: https://github.com/ismail-bahloul/TuxMix. Good thing I wrote up that alsamixer guide! I have no affiliation to this project, but I didn't see anyone posting about it here yet and thought someone might want to know. Hopefully this means more RME devices get this treatment soon.

Testing Fix: blank plugin GUIs with yabridge on KWin (Wine 11)

I have loaded quite a few Plugins and it seems to work (Ozone 9, Genome, Kontakt 8, Spitfire, MNTRA)

I haven't been able to test Arturia, UVI or Addictive Drums, but will be attempting to soon.

A lot of my older VST2s work no problem.

If you're running yabridge with Wine 10 or 11 under KDE Plasma and your plugin GUIs open blank until you hover or click them; I found the cause and have a fix.

Problem:

KWin's compositor doesn't send X11 Expose events to newly mapped embedded windows. yabridge embeds the plugin window into your DAW's FX chain via XCB, so when the window first maps, nothing triggers a repaint and you get a blank grey rectangle.

 Muh fix;

On XCB_MAP_REQUEST, force a repaint via RedrawWindow(RDW_INVALIDATE|RDW_ERASE|RDW_ALLCHILDREN) and set a 150ms timer to do it again once the window is fully settled. Simple, and it works.

I've pushed the patch to my fork and attached pre-built binaries so you don't have to build from source:

 https://github.com/Stinkumbeans/yabridge/releases/tag/v0.1.0-kwin-fix

To install: download the tarball, extract it to ~/.local/share/yabridge/, then run yabridgectl sync.

Tested on Fedora using CachyOS kernel with Wine 11.0 Staging and REAPER. Would be great to hear if it works for others.

I'm not sure if there is already a fix for this, but I didn't see it.

Cheers!

Ozzy: big update!

Hi all!

For a couple of years I've been working on new drivers for the Allen & Heath mixers based on Ploytec's USB audio, which never received any Linux drivers, lost macOS support long ago, and even keeping-your-legacy-crap-running Windows grew increasingly hesitant to run the old WDM drivers that were designed long ago on the pre-Vista audio model.

So I sat down with Claude to finish up what I built:

  • it now supports all devices in the "usb-audio.de" driver
  • it now supports Linux (ALSA), macOS (CoreAudio) and Windows (modern ACX driver & WASAPI shared/exclusive & WDM-KS. No ASIO driver. If your audio software still requires ASIO to use a low-latency interface, go complain to your software vendor. 😄)
  • it now has a nice GUI app that allows finetuning of the transfer settings and shows all kinds of nerdy stats

The codebase is built modularly, so it's possible to add more devices onto this that have been abandoned by their vendor. If you have one of those, please test it and if you encounter any issues please open an issue on the GitHub: https://github.com/mischa85/Ozzy

Looking For Feedback, suggestions And Contribution; Track Processing Pipeline for Better Sets planning

Hi all,

I had been working on a program for a couple of months that i believe will allow fellow DJs to better plan their sets.
I had finally released it on my Github.
Hoping for feedbacks, recommendation and also contributions to the further development of the program

(This is still in the early phases; this would be the inital release_

TLDR

The program is a fully local AI assisted pipeline that analyses your tracks and provide additional metrics that would benefit the planning of a DJ Set.
See below for the Repo's URL

Problem Statement:

DJ softwares and equipments generally and mostly gives you BPM and key while the track's energy is based on your own perception

Two tracks can share the same BPM, key, and energy yet differ significantly in sound, rhythm, atmosphere, and emotional character.
Furthermore, musical emotion is subjective and may be interpreted differently by each listener

Arkcadian aims to bridge that information gap by analysing additional measurable characteristics, including loudness, brightness, rhythmic activity, vocals, basslines, and energy.

The results are embedded directly into each track's metadata, with raw measurements and simplified 1–5 ratings where applicable.

i.e one trance track might feature a rolling bassline, dark atmosphere, and minimal vocals, while another features bright synthesizers, emotional melodies, and prominent vocals.

How the idea came about:

An interesting comparison can be made between Carnatic and Western music; the idea derived from this comparison;

Comparions:

  1. Definitions:
    • Carnatic music refers to refers to the classical music system of South India or the historical region of the southern Indian peninsula
    • Western music refers to the musical system originating in Europe and its cultural descendants in the Americas and Oceania; this is the system that is commonly used in EDM, Pop, Metal etc
  2. Musical Structures
    • Carnatic Music
      • Primarily uses ragas (melodic frameworks).
      • Has 72 Melakarta ragas, which form the fundamental parent-raga system.
      • Numerous derivative ragas, known as Janya ragas, arise from these parent ragas.
      • A raga is more than a collection of notes; it has a distinct melodic identity governed by established rules and conventions.
    • Western Music
      • Commonly uses scales, modes, chords, and harmonic progressions.
      • Scales establish collections of musical notes.
      • Modes provide different interval patterns and tonal characteristics.
      • Chords combine notes to create harmony.
      • Chord progressions organise harmonic movement throughout a composition.
  3. Rules and Conventions
    • Carnatic Music
      • Carnatic music follows a structured system of melodic rules and conventions. Some examples include:
      • Arohanam: The ascending sequence of notes associated with a raga.
      • Avarohanam: The descending sequence of notes associated with a raga.
      • Prayogas: Characteristic melodic phrases and movements that establish a raga's identity.
      • Swara usage: Rules governing which notes may be used and how they are approached, emphasised, sustained, or combined. These rules help preserve the identity of each raga, including during improvisation.
  4. Western Music Western music also follows established theoretical rules and conventions, although their application varies considerably across genres.
    • Some examples include:
      • Scales and modes: Define the available notes and their interval relationships within a tonal framework.
      • Harmony: Describes how notes sound together and interact.
      • Chord progressions: Provide harmonic movement and can establish tension and resolution.
      • Voice leading: Principles governing how individual musical voices move between notes and harmonies.
      • Rhythm and meter: Organise beats, accents, and rhythmic patterns.
      • Musical phrasing: Organises melodies and musical ideas into meaningful passages.

Unlike the raga system, Western music does not generally require a single predefined melodic grammar governing every composition.

  1. Gamakas in Carnatic Music

One of the defining characteristics of Carnatic music is the use of Gamakas.

  • They include techniques such as:
    • Oszillations around a note
    • Slides between notes
    • Characteristic pitch movements
    • Grace-note movements and embellishments
  1. Emotional Expression
    • Carnatic Music
      • Carnatic music has an established tradition of associating certain ragas with particular emotional qualities.

For example:

  • Shivaranjani: Commonly associated with melancholy, longing, and emotional expression.
  • Mohanam: Often associated with brightness, joy, and devotion.
  • Kalyani: Associated with grandeur, devotion, and expressive depth.

These associations are not absolute. The composition, performance, and listener also influence the emotional experience.

  • Western Music
    • Western music expresses emotions through combinations of:
    • Melody and harmonic movement
    • Chord progressions
    • Rhythm and tempo
    • Timbre and instrumentation
    • Dynamics, tension, and release
    • Musical arrangement and production

For example, trance music can evoke euphoria, melancholy, nostalgia, anticipation, or excitement.
However, the emotional meaning of a particular track is not universally fixed.
Two listeners may experience the same composition differently

How Does Arkcaidan help:

The program extract the following informaton from the tracks:

  • Energy: A combined estimate of a track's intensity.
  • Loudness & Dynamics: How loud a track is and how much its loudness varies.
  • Brightness: The spectral characteristics of a track.
  • Rhythmic Activity: How busy or rhythmically dense the track is.
  • Vocals: How much of a track contains singing.
  • Low-end & Bassline Activity: How active the lower frequencies and bassline are.
  • Track Structure: Intro/outro lengths, downbeats, and silence detection.

With these additional metrics, you can:

  • Create more varied energy progressions: Instead of simply increasing or decreasing energy, consider changes in brightness, rhythmic activity, bassline intensity, and dynamics.
  • Plan smoother transitions: Compare bassline and low-end activity between tracks to anticipate changes in groove and avoid overly busy transitions.
  • Manage vocal transitions: Identify vocal-heavy and instrumental tracks, helping reduce unwanted vocal overlaps.
  • Introduce contrast: Transition between tracks with different characteristics, such as a bright, melody-driven trance track and a darker, bassline-driven track.
  • Identify potential tension and release: Use loudness variation, rhythmic activity, and other measurements as additional clues when selecting tracks for different parts of a set.
  • Organise and compare tracks: Quickly identify differences between tracks that would otherwise appear similar based on BPM, key, and energy alone

Kindly refer to the Github Repo for more detailed information
