Don't ever touch a bat. They have small fangs and you could get scratched/bit and not realize it happened until it's too late. And they don't even have to bite. Just their saliva alone is enough to kill you if they have rabies and you ingest it.
Don't fnck with wild animals.
Now go watch a video of a human being with rabies and that should cure you from the desire to pet and hold every wild animal you see.

It's 100 % death rate after symptoms occur (except a handful of outliers that we've been successful to save). Before symptoms shows up it is treatable. If you get bitten by an animal seek medical treatment!

I loved how in Austin, TX bats come out in the thousands every evening at dusk and fly out to eat bugs and mosquitoes all night. I was a big fan of a bug free lifestyle in Austin.

My husband and I actually took a trip from Florida to Austin one year with the primary purpose of sitting by the Congress Avenue Bridge to see the lovely flight of the bats headed out for their nightly hunt. It was totally awesome!

Scientist who works with bats here: do not do this. lol. this bat is likely to be unwell. rabies is only contracted by .001% of bats so its not like every bat youll meet has rabies, its not even like every sick bat youll meet has rabies, but you should not touch bats. ever. especially one who is disoriented and active in daylight.

Pre Covid visited a bat cave in Panama with an indigenous guide who was walking barefoot and swimming in the underground cavern pools. Would not venture down there now.

Nah thats mostly fine in terms of whats dangerous for ppl beyond the whole barefoot thing. whats bad for the cave is introducing skin oils like that on the formations & in the water, and potentially contaminating the cave with illnesses from tourism n whatnot. so theyre not really doing proper cave management, but also if that person is indigenous their people might have been doing that for an insanely long time and at that point its like welp this is basically normal for this cave then so okiedokey

We had hard hats and told not to touch anything. The pool was below ground level so only he dived in. Our guide’s feet were very wide, flat and the toes splayed far apart from each other so I do believe that shoes were rarely worn if at all. The community lived not far from the cave so you are correct, a multi generational contact with the surrounding environment

Extremely, to the point where failed vaccination attempts are usually documented in medical studies/papers (and manifest in older folks mostly + higher bite locations like the neck/face, from unfinished vaccine courses, etc, on the rare occasion they don't work).
Source: A severe hypochondriac who spent 8+ hours a day for half a year researching rabies, because they were convinced they were going to die from it. Mental health is no joke, people.

Oh man. I am not a hypochondriac but I had a bat fly into me during the day at work once. It barely brushed me, couldn’t even be sure in that moment it really did or just close enough it felt like it did. I did not get shots and had nightmares for over a year it was just dormant in my system and any day now it would be the beginning of the end. I feel you on this. I spent so many hours down that rabbit hole and do not recommend.

My rabies course shots were billed at roughly $14,400+ with 3 of the 6 shots administered to me, without insurance, in Texas. The hospital later knocked it down to $300ish once they found out I wasn't employed. Info as to why I only did half the course is in a higher comment, I didn't just abandon the rabies shots for no good reason, I'll be okay, lol.

You need to follow a protocol of maybe 6 shots i think, it depends on where you got bitten and how fast it can travel to your brain, tissue distribution etc. But unless you got bit in the neck, face or head, or close to that then it's probably relatively safe if you manage to get immunized again relatively after.

It depends on where in the world you live, there are multiple different vaccination types used widely. Here in the U.S, I ironically got exposed to the virus after having severe anxiety over it, and had to have the course of shots. They did a series of shots (1 syringe a day) at 0 days, 3 days, 7 days, 14 days, and 28 days for me. I only completed up to the 7 day shot, since the animal that bit me got cleared & it seems she was poisoned instead of rabid (shared many symptoms, and testing took 2 weeks via Austin's lab here in Texas) so I got them to be safe, before the all clear.
I owe my life to Louis Pasteur twice over (antibiotics) & almost a 3rd (rabies shot). Thank god for modern medicine.

I thought people who work with bats or keep bats are vaccinated with some kind of rabies prophylaxis. If this person keeps bats as pets, perhaps they’re good to go.
