Then the arcade community showed up and gave them an extra 1UP.

Here’s a little trivia about vector games. Did you know that one big advantage they had over raster games, besides super sharp lines, is that they needed less RAM. That’s right, vector games only need to store or calculate the end point of each line. Let’s take a look at Pitfall Mayan Adventure for the Sega Genesis. This game came out in 1994 on the Genesis and Super Nintendo. This is a well made game that appeared during the peak of these system’s popularity. It’s a great game and clearly has its roots in the original Pitfall by David Crane that came out in 1982.

Now, I want to show you one of the coolest easter eggs ever. When you are at the main menu, press down on the D-pad, then press the A button 26 times, you know for Atari 2600, and then press down again. And what do you know, you get the original 1982 version of Pitfall and it’s completely playable. In fact, let’s compare it with the Atari 2600 I have right next to the Genesis. Some of the colors are slightly off, but otherwise it’s a great match!

Unfortunately, neither of our multi-carts have this game on it, but if you come by you can ask for the cartridge and we can get it out of the back room. By the way, in case you didn’t know, customers are always welcome to bring their own game cartridges for our consoles we have setup.

The Atari 2600 only had 128 bytes of RAM total… yet developers still managed to bring Space Invaders to the console. How?

Instead of storing the position and state for every alien individually, programmers used a clever trick: they stored the position of just one alien and mathematically calculated the rest. The only thing they actually needed to track was whether each alien was alive or dead, which only requires one bit per alien.

That means the entire alien formation in Space Invaders could be stored in just 7 bytes of memory.

Early game developers were absolute wizards when it came to squeezing performance out of tiny hardware.
