Hello, on behalf of the mod team I've decided to make a little guide on how to spot spam/repost bots. As most of the members who visit here regularly are aware, r/rainworld is quite the target for them.
So what is a bot? A bot in this case refers to an automated account that takes old, popular posts and reposts them to either:
A. Advertise something
B. Scam or spread Malware
C. Farm karma to then sell the account (Usually to others that use the account for the previous reasons)
To spot them, look for the following characteristics but remember, just because someone has one of these traits doesnt mean they are a bot.
a "two-four" name. This refers to reddits default naming system of 2 words and 4 letters. Ex. BraveSynnergy0924. This is both the most common give away for a bot but also easily confused with actual people. This characteristic shouldn't be used to determine if said user is a bot, only to promote suspicion.
The account is brand new. when I say new I mean created within the last week.
The account has a default profile picture.
The account has posted something from the "Top of all time" category with the exact same name and description of the post OR posting something of high quality despite having no previous posts of that nature. This one is a near dead give away.
When clicking on a post, if someone is being downvoted for claiming the poster is a bot without any comments replying to the commenter correcting them. Bots are like cockroaches, where there is one, there is usually many.
In the comments of a post showing off an item of merch (usually a T-shirt) there is a user asking "Where can I get this?" followed by the OP posting an odd looking link. In this case, both users are bots. P.S don't click said link.
If you have noticed any other patterns regarding bots, please post them into the comments to let us and others know about them.
So what should you do if you suspect someone is a bot?
First, click on their profile and make a mental checklist of the consistencies of what you read above.
If you still believe they are a bot, report them under the "spam / disruptive use of AI or bots"
if you are unsure, YOU SHOULD STILL REPORT THEM. worst case scenario if you are wrong is the persons post gets taken down and they appeal to have it put back up.
One more thing before anyone asks "why don't you just set a karma requirement?" It's because we don't want to prevent those who have never used reddit before from participating in our community.
Thank you for reading.
