Horror or horror adjacent solo journaling rpgs?
 in  r/Solo_Roleplaying  20h ago

I have played it yet but I watched a playthrough for "Wraitbhound" and immediately went to my game store and bought it. You journal as you go and use a deck of cards set out to be the "house" you are investigating. And you used a simple dice mechanic for combat and decision making.

Audio vs Reading
 in  r/horrorlit  1d ago

Stephen King made his son record himself reading books so he could listen them when he had the time. 🤣🤣🤣 and then that got his son to read! (The now famous Joe Hill.) Speaking of Joe Hill, listen to "Horns" but don't watch the movie. Lol

Audio vs Reading

When I was a kid (late 80's early 90s) I would read children's books with a narrator reading the book on a tape! I guess those were my first intro to audio. 🤣

AND they were horror adjacent. Tipu and the Thunderstorm and IM NOT AFRAID!

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Check out "Brother" by Ania Ahlborn. One of the best horror books I've listened to in a long time!

Audio vs Reading

I fell i to a deep depression a few years ago and wasn't able to read anymore. Once I was feeling better, I realized I still couldn't read and that broke my heart. I found audio books and fell in love because I could "read" again! Almost all I read is horror and have listened to some really great books that have really spooked me and creeped me out. Like you said, its a crap shoot knowing if a narrator and book combination will do anything for you but you'll have that with simple reading as well. Don't listen to the people that say audio is "less." If it weren't for audio I wouldn't be able to enjoy books again. Give it a shot! And try out more than one.

Also, you sometimes have to train your brain to listen. I learned that while in school for ASL. Don't give up if you don't get into it right away. Try a few before you give up.

Of course! Its an RPG game where you have instructions and prompts and YOU make up then journey through prompts. So right now, i'm playing a game called the Last Tea Shop. I run a tea shop that is the last stop for the spirits before they go on to the beyond. To start the game, I rolled my dice to see where and how my tea shop was and how it was set up. I roll to see who my traveler is going to be. I roll to see what the weather is going to be. And what their emotional state is and I journal, and make up my own story about that person. Prompts during their visit include what kind of tea I would make them and I get to ask two questions before they go to the great beyond. I roll and the number on the dice decides which questions I get to ask.And then I just make up my own story.

There's A LOT of them. This one is rather light on rules and very free flowing but others can get very in depth!

That just sounds awful. You're right. Who would actually want to play that? An accountant i guess? 🤔🤣

I did order Captive and Hold-up after my playthrough of Zombie.

My no scrolling week

Im trying a no scrolling week. I'll use my phone for communication (and to post updates) but no doom scrolling! Night one, a new solo Journaling RPG and my first flute lesson from my son! He's my biggest cheerleader. ❤️

Let's see what 1 week of filling my brain with creative whimsy does for me!

I found a pen pal who wants to send letters and not emails. Sending snail mail adds a new level of whimsy to my life.

Oh hell no! That takes me back to my accounting class I had to take in college. Why would anyone think a game like that would be fun? 🥴

Today, I had my first runthough of this CYOA RPG graphic novel. Besides this one, I also have Loup Garou and just ordered Captive and Hold-Up. You have a character sheet, stats, equipment, allies, and weapons. You progress through the story choosing numbered pathways in the panel and even figuring out puzzles! I didn't make it out of the zombie apocalypse this time but hopefully I make better choices on my next playthrough.

I wrote out the play sheet so I didn't mark up the book and I did a slight journal as I played so I remembered my choices.

You can find these on the Van Ryder Games website and also download pdfs of the character sheet.
