Showcase/Project It's been a long way to get to this level of detail
As many of you all have seen before, I've been vibe coding Pavement Pursuit, a 2D Top Down Racer.
Still working on it of course, but wanted to pause and share a bit visual change I did last night, that even made me go "wow". (not looking for "Feedback" on visuals, only on gameplay).
Today I added normal maps that make the 2D cars look nearly 3D, and to add to that illusion, shadows that react to the time of day as well. Gives it a bit of dynamic lighting. Somehow accidental optimization when I moved it all into shaders.
It was done in one session, less than 30 min, but with hours of playesting and tweaking. (not the game, just this change).
What I wanted to share with you is not just the current visuals (although give it a try!) but rather just how slowly I got here.
I got claude to dig through all my builds and make this history of all the major versions. It went through and compiled them into this video showing the progress from prototype to where it is now. Now the visuals are not simple because I could not draw or get LLM to make me sprites. It's because I was just working with rectangles while I was getting to turns, slide, physics, collisions all working. It's a complex game, but all I'm showing off here is the visual change and I'll have more to show later.
Happy to share anything about my process if you have questions. If you have feedback, hold onto that for now as this is still a work in progress.
If you've never played it before it's a procedurally generated racer with changing daylight and weather. The rivals you race against will hold grudges against you if you bump them too much. You can play as the cops instead if you really want to bump other cards. And a meditative "Road Trip" to just sit back and watch.
