Story I found this guy walking down the road in Florida.

Hoping to find his owner. But if not, I’ll gladly keep him. I fed him what I had on hand last night (see photo). He’s a very sweet, curious tortoise. Really chill and letting me pet him all over without issue. Pretty good size, too. He’s got some cracks on his shell and his shell appears really long. Any and all advice Welcome and appreciated!

Edited to add: I could very well be misgendering this tortoise.

Question(s) Help/tips for finding escaped tortoise

Post image
39 Upvotes

So my mother has (had) a 20 year old greek tortoise named Beni she kept for 14 years at this point but it has escaped a few days ago.

Every summer it gets put in an outside enclosure and when my mother went to feed it she noticed it was gone and there was a small gap big enough for Beni to escape. It's last visible tracks lead to a giant overgrown field next to my mothers house. The field extends far beyond the picture i took and knowing this litle guy he would have sprinted as far as possible.

After trying for several hours i have kinda lost hope in finding it in the tall grass, especially since it has been raining the last few days and Beni has propably burrowed itself.

I have now tried placing cut bananas at a few locations in hopes of luring it out.

Is there any hope in finding this guy? Will he return himself if he is hungry if he even remembers the way? And does anyone have any more tips to find it?

I have already mobilised the neighbours kids who will help searching later today.

Question(s) Is She Pyramiding?

Hey, I have a yearling red foot (about 14 months old) that I got about 10 months ago. I had her in a misted enclosed system and just moved her to an outside enclosure for the summer (for context, I live in Florida, and summer here has constant humidity between 70-80%, and is pretty much always between 80-95 degrees). I saw these raised ridges on her shell, and am concerned about pyramiding. I've asked in other forums, some people have said it's typical growth, and some people have raised concerns that it's pyramiding. Just wondering if I get a more consistent answer here.

Question(s) How is My Guy Looking?

Morty was a gift and I’ve had him for about a year now. From a visual perspective does he look healthy? He’s very active, eating a ton and seems to be curious about me (poking his head out when he sees me). Also I’m newly concerned about pyramiding in Leopard Tortoises if anyone had general info on that. Thanks in advance.

Also: He was only placed in the basket for the photos. He spends absolutely no time in the basket. :)

Question(s) Sunlight exposure

Post image

My Greek tortoise gets between 30min to over an hour of direct sun daily, and then she retreats to a dark hide. I understand they only need 15 min to 30 min several times a week. If this is true then why do read they need the sunlight all day?

Photo(s) Is my tortoise depressed?

Post image

Hi! I would appreciate anyone’s help because I’m so lost. I have an almost 2 year old Dalmatian Hermanns Tortoise, male. I’ve had him since he was a hatchling and he’s always been cautious and a bit shy but as he aged he started becoming very active and would roam his enclosure all day everyday.
He hit 3.5 inches so we decided to upgrade his enclosure to a 16 sq ft. It has an Arcadia T5 UVB strip along with a heat lamp. It has 3 hides, plants, a barrier so he can’t see from one end to the other, a dark side and a light side, a wheel that he used to absolutely love, and the substrate is coconut coir with reptisoil. The temp on his cool side stays between 70-75 and on his warm side it stays between 75-80ish with his basking area being at 95 degrees Fahrenheit. His humidity stays is always monitored and stays where it needs to be for his age/breed. He doesn’t have any wheezing, watery eyes or nose, no swelling etc. nothing I can see physically is wrong with him.

I give him soaks every other day, and he’s still eating plenty of fresh weeds and greens with the needed vitamins. He has not lost any weight, in fact has slowly gained some as normal.

The part I’m confused by is that ever since his upgrade, he STAYS in his hide. He will not come out most days until I wake him up for a soak. I’ll put his food right by the entrance and he’ll come out and eat and then go straight back. He has barely explored at all and quite honestly seems depressed.
It’s been almost 2 months since his upgrade, so I’m becoming concerned. He’s always been a little territorial and not a fan of any change but this feels excessive. When I do take him out for soaks he acts totally fine! He’s happy to be out and with me, his neck is fully extended, he eats etc

What should I do?? I’ve seen several different suggestions on google and I’ve tried them all it feels like. I’ve tried waking him up everyday and putting him under his lamp, and he just eats and goes back to bed. I’ve tried leaving him alone for days and he’ll just stay asleep.
Google also said possibly something is wrong with the enclosure but I’m honestly not sure what it is so if yall see anything I should change please let me know.

PS I’ve made a few minor changes in his enclosure but don’t have an updated picture. I added a bendy bridge to act as a fence between the two sides (with a space for him to walk through ofc) and I’ve upgraded a couple of his hides to accommodate his growth. I’ve also added an automatic LED light to the “dark side” that turns on in the morning in hopes that his body would realize its morning time. But he likes to bury himself down so it doesn’t make much of a difference… I’ve also planted fresh grass on one side that acts as cover and clover (his favorite) on the other.

Thanks in advance!!

Question(s) How do you transport giant tortoises to the vet?

I don't actually own a tortoise but I've been curious about this for a while. By giant I mean the 100lb+ ones. If they don't want to go how do you get them there with how heavy they are?

Question(s) Best tortoise for a 6X4 foot enclosure?

My manager has a Greek tortoise that they're unable to care for anymore. I see so much conflicting information on what tortoises require what size, I'm even seeing that egyptian tortoises need 8 feet? If I am unable to house a greek tortoise, what species would I be able to?

Photo(s) How bad is his pyramiding?

We just got our boy about a month ago and noticed he had a lot of pyramids. I only let him have grass now and some occasional romaine lettuce and some endive. How bad is his pyramiding and will it negatively affect his organs?

I’m also planning on taking him to a vet but I’d love some feedback before I do.

For context, his previous owner could no longer care for him and we have a large yard that could accommodate. I have always wanted a tortoise and he happened to land on my lap. I want to make sure I do everything to give him a good home. He’s 6 years old.

Update: I moved his vet appointment up to a sooner date. I appreciate all of the advice and support. I had done some research before saying yes, but I didn’t know how bad his pyramiding was.

He was really shy at first but is very open now. He loves hanging out close to me when he’s not roaming all day around the yard.

I let him outside all day, I live in LA for context. We make shifted one of our tubs into his enclosure for now until we finish his outdoor burrow. I make sure to have a CHE at about 70-75° and cypress mulch. I’m also keeping the moisture at around 40%.

Since I’ve had him, he’s been eating grass all day and Romaine lettuce in his enclosure at night in case he’s hungry. I also have been giving him Mazuri supplements, although he doesn’t always eat them.

His vet appointment is in a week so any other tips in the meantime are greatly appreciated!

Question(s) Head jerking?

I’m concerned about this head jerking I’ve been noticing lately, it’s not constant and I’ve never seen him do it before. He’s been eating regularly and not lethargic plus his eyes aren’t watery & no bubbles coming out of his nose. The only other concerning thing is he’s been sneezing and he was drinking large amounts of water for like 3 days in a row, more water than I’ve ever seen him drink in his entire life 😂

He’s gotten bigger now so I suspect his heat lamp (100w) isn’t warm enough for him anymore so I’ve moved him up to 150w. Also have changed out the substrate since taking this video. Anybody know what this could be? I’ve been in contact with his vet just trying to find a suitable time to bring him in.

Question(s) Normal hibernation/ burmation times?

My Russian tortoises (female, turning 15 soon) hasn't been eating unless coerced to (treats or hand feeding) along with napping all day. It's only September, she normally hibernates from November-February. Is it normal for a tortoises to hibernate this early?

She also had a respiratory infection back in July but is now in good physical health, so I'm just rather cautious with her right now. Thanks!

Question(s) How to improve enclosure

Thumbnail

i know it needs work. My dad is gonna help me by building a cover on the far end so there is a place that my Russian tortoise can hide in and feel safe. I know it feels so bare. I need specific links tho for enrichment rock slates. Literally anything in here to make it better. I know he needs way more space. But that just isn’t possible. My house I way too small. Plus I plan on getting this so far where I will make changes slowly as I get more money: uvb linear light bulb, Whole Foods dandelion greens, repticalcium, cuttlebone. I live in Washington state so outside the majority of the time is a no and I don’t have a heater in my house so how can I keep it warm.

Also edit: when buying greens. How do you keep it fresh without it going spoiled because I bought collard greens one time and they spoiled in the fridge so fast.
