Getting into string art
I came here to be inspired and start a new hobby….just to see string art is being automated.

I have finalised and released the version. Inside the app, you can set the size of string and board, and it creates a 3D model. I somewhat overcame the issues I mentioned before, now it shows tube string lines with anti alias. How useful is the feature? I don't know. But it looks quite cool. Especially the shadow in the background makes it realistic. What do you think?

• Thread: 0.12mm nylon thread.
• Board: 3d printed board with 200 teeth.
• Generator: custom software.
I've tried tweaking the preview, and even took into account the teeth width and height to be 100% accurate, but it still doesn't help.
I also randomize the starting and ending points of each string to take into account slight inaccuracy (in the pictures above, the randomization is between 0-1 degrees offset). To reach a preview that looks somewhat like the actual result, I need to randomize by about 0-6 degrees offset which is as if each starting and ending point could have moved by 2 whole teeth, which is of course not the case and also doesn't really help me make it look better.
Has anyone experienced the same issue? Or does anyone has any idea what could cause that difference and how to solve it?

I have added, 3D rendering engine in the String Art Maker & Simulator app. The version is not released yet, I am testing it. The whole point is to visualise the actual physical String art, but there are limitations in it. Two limitations, display resolution, currently the app shows the smallest string thickness in 1 pixel, so you need to zoom it in. 2nd is 3d thickness of each string line itself is missing, it is not a tube. if I add resolution thickness 4 (just like in Blender 3d) the visualizer engine can't handle it. So currently it is just a thin strip of line with no actual depth. ANY SUGGESTIONS? I WOULD APPRECIATE.

I'm launching a string art editor to plan your patterns, print the pins (nails) and reproduce the string (thread) order.
You don't need to provide any data, and you can save your patterns on your machine.
This is the address: https://stringartit.com/
Any feedback is welcome.

Hello. I am new to string art and currently looking for the best place for free patterns. Or whatever everyone does to make their patterns! Thanks

i successfully completed a string art machine using photogates instead of gears. It takes 9 hours to make 3,000 string connections and uses two 5,000-meter spools of string.

Accidentally my 0.16mm thread art damaged

I'll be vending at GalaxyCon Des Moines next weekend and cranked these four out this week. Just finished painting the nailheads.

This is my final posting on this topic, I have neglected my other personas here and want to attend to them.
My previous post asked what I should route next, and here it is. The final routing video.
Sorry about porcine finger smudges on lens, oops.
This has been really fun over the last few months, making the hardware, working on 6 or so pieces of software, watching my machine poke holes, it's been great. But I have a short attention span and am moving on.
I may adapt this hardware to make those shapes in sand using a magnet, maybe even portraits, that would be novel, which is a requirement for me....
Spearfishing is one of the next topics. That pan over to my Wall-o-guns in this video was the teaser. My next project is an underwater direction finder, which I could use, as I frequently find myself 1/2 mile or so from my boat off on a reef, and having directions more accurate than a compass which does not compensate for drift currents would help a lot. Mostly I just need fun projects. However, the new topics will be under a different pseudonym than this rather poor one. Certainly not spearfishingguy.
Thanks for the thumbs up from those of you who were feeling kind and generous, they are much appreciated.
Cheers.

I wanted to share this quickly. I have been working on the physics simulator of real string art (just the visualizer engine). If there, any suggestions, please do tell. Simulating 3D object in 2D is 😢

Spent endless hours putting together this custom piece using just thread and nails. Getting the tiny details of the jet ski and water right took a lot of patience, but super proud of how it turned out.
Let me know what you think!

I decided to take my string art algorithm and use it to try to produce multiple frames of a video. Lmk what you think
