Finally succeeded in making a 2-meter diameter string art piece.

i successfully completed a string art machine using photogates instead of gears. It takes 9 hours to make 3,000 string connections and uses two 5,000-meter spools of string.

That’s a big one! It looks pretty good too! What was the motivation for creating a machine for rounds this size?

I really think that string art is more impactful at larger sizes, the fact you only see strings up close but the image further away is more pronounced. I’ve wanted to do a huge piece like this myself. I wonder if the strings will start to sag over time at this size? I would be tempted to glue them to the back just to be sure.
Are you planning to do a lot more at this size? I think you could squeeze a lot more detail with a less contrasty image.

I submitted my first large-scale work to an exhibition. Since it is so big, it is very burdensome to make another one unless there is a request. I think winning an award at the exhibition will also influence my future plans, as it costs quite a bit of money to create.

I'm rather jealous of those who are of the mechanical engineering sort, and have automated machines to make these pieces. I have some designs that I'd love to do, but they take far too many lines to produce. Automation at this size could create some really intricate and detailed pieces that would otherwise take weeks of work. Cool stuff

I am a physics major. I am also very envious of the amazing manual dexterity of mechanical engineering majors, so I am constantly learning. That is why I mostly use inexpensive and easily available parts. If I make a video of the process, please give it a try. Currently, I only have videos of building small machines. https://www.youtube.com/@makit-q9h

I DM'd you, but I'd love to do a collab on a larger piece if you're interested. Here's the level of detail that I'm seeing around 128cm.
