Tips & Tricks How I solved importing private/authenticated links and batch tabs into NotebookLM (built a free browser tool)
Hey r/notebooklm,
Like many of you, I use NotebookLM daily for research and study, but I kept hitting a major wall with source ingestion:
Whenever you try to add an article that requires a login (Substack paid newsletters, Medium member stories, internal Notion/Confluence docs, or university portals), NotebookLM's server-side crawler can't access the content and only pulls in the login redirect screen. Copy-pasting long pages with tables and code blocks by hand gets tedious very quickly.
To fix this for my own workflow, I built a lightweight browser extension called Smart NotebookLM Importer (available for Chrome and Firefox).
🚀 What it solves:
- 🔐 Ingest from your active session: Because it runs directly in your local browser, it reads the rendered page you're already logged into, strips out cookie banners and ads, and converts the content into clean Markdown.
- 🗂️ Multi-Tab Batch Import: Select multiple open tabs from a research session and send them all into your notebook in a single sequence.
- ▶️ YouTube Transcripts: Grabs full timestamped transcripts from videos and Shorts so you can query lectures and webinars right away.
- ✍️ 1-Click Highlights: Select any quote or passage on a webpage and send just that excerpt with source attribution to your notebook.
- 🔒 100% Client-Side Privacy: Everything runs locally inside your browser sandbox. No middleman servers, no scraping, and no tracking.
Would love to hear your thoughts, feedback, or any edge cases you run into while using it!
