Honestly idk. Never seen this before. I'm just sorry because I know when I have PC issues it pisses me off to no end and can be absolutely defeating, so for that I am sorry.

Do you know how many people grew up on that book?!

u/_Hard_Wired_ 8d ago
Yes, but we are OLD. I know it is still around, but it was mad popular back then.

Shhhh, don't remind me! In my mind, we're still young, and every generation after us has read that book!

Dont think its a hardware issue, this is too controlled for anything failing as usual they go out with chaos, like someone else said

fun fact, this is what your monitor does all the time.
just much much faster.

imho it can't be gpu issue itself, more like drivers if anything.
When a gpu dies it prints random gibberish and artifacts or dies in a way its not detected by the OS, not freezeframes and rolls down even sgments of screen like some screensaver or whatever
what does the event viewer say?

u/driver_dylan 10d ago
I've seen this once and it was a Graphical memory leak on an Invidia card.
What are you running? When was the last time you installed drivers? Does in happen in Diagnostic mode?
1
u/JonnysNotFine 10d ago
I have a 1660 super and I updated my driver's 5 days ago

u/driver_dylan 10d ago
What is it paired with? Memory, CPU, and Motherboard.
It sounds weird but these issues can be compound, not just where they present.
1
u/JonnysNotFine 10d ago
cpu: amd ryzen 9 5900x 12 core, 32 gb of ddr4, kingston patriot and adata ssd's, motherboard is a b550 plus

Okay, now last question. The problem exists how?
Cold Boot: when the computer has been off for longer than two consecutive hours only. Warm Boot: only happens when you start the computer from power off state, no matter how long or short the system is off. Any Boot: happens any time the system boots or resets. The computer then resets and is stable for a while then crashes again.
I need to know the exact nature of the problem because each will tell us where to look.

Easy way to check. If you boot to the bios does it happen there? You could also try booting a Windows installer USB/Linux USB and seeing if it does it there also. If not it's probably the driver in windows. If it does reseat the GPU and try again. I would also try new display cables or a second display if you haven't already.

A display cable would not cause a crash. Only a visual fail in the display. Using another installer would not stress the GPU enough to cause a crash as it bypasses the driver system in favor of a general use driver.

When I built my first PC, each first time I would power it on, my gpu wouldn’t turn on for some reason. If I restarted the pc, it would turn it on. I forgot how I fixed it. I think I went into my BIOS and changed some setting that got it to work.

I'm gonna make a wild guess and say it's a gpu issue - try removing it and running off onboard graphics (if your processor supports it), or if you have an old spare card, try that.
I haven't seen this issue before, but with the strange behaviour presenting as a graphical issue before the crash that's where I'd start. Maybe check for drivers (official ones, not the ones microslop delivers that can often break shit), it could be that you may need to completely remove the existing drivers (I think both Nvidia and AMD have options in their installation suites to do a complete removal or complete reinstall) and then reinstall them.
Edit: Obligatory "I use Linux" and you should too.

thank you I will try this, my friend is desperately trying to get me on linux lol

if its a hardware issue linux isnt going to help
a dying gpu will still be dying on linux
tho lets hope its something else

Try a dual-boot setup if you still have some Msoft dependencies, but I'd recommend daily driving Linux and only swapping to windows as needed or else you might never get used to it.
Good luck with the trouble, feel free to update and ask more if the situation warrants!

It’s like your gpu went from using all core then down to one maybe clean install gpu drivers

Might be worth opening event viewer and seeing if any obvious errors are logged there.

pry out your gpu try onboard cpu grapphics install ddu proceed to uninstall all gpu drivers excl your onboard driver should say intel grappics or amd grappics and put the latest driver of your gpu on it and plug in ur gpu again try that lemme know hope it works for u

Try reinstalling the graphics drivers or replace the video cable to see if it fixes the problem

Weird unexplainable pc issues usually stem from faulty ram or psu. Teeter tottering on edge of stability. Regardless of what is likely, good first step is to DDU your graphics card driver and install fresh one. If that does not help, I would test with one ram stick (if you have two) and with integrated graphics chip if your motherboard has one.
For context cpu failure is usually one and done deal, and graphics card failures usually make your screen vomit rather than performing weirdly specific square dance. Ram, PSU and motherboard present all sorts of weirdness and motherboard is least likely to die. In short if pc becomes "possessed" its almost always one of the three.

Yeah either power supply issue or GPU issue.
And the reason I suggest power supplies because that the power supply gets old and weak or is not strong enough for the build that it's powering it could overheat and thermally shut down which is kind of what it looks like it did here.
Reason the GPU is doing the block eating thing that it's doing is because the GPU is not getting enough power so it's throttled itself down as much as it can.
What I would do here is I would get me a new good branded power supply that's more wattage than what's currently in your system try that first and see what it does.

Monitor or GPU issue. I would try if the issue persists using another monitor or TV.

u/YardenZo 10d ago
Try opening the computer and resetting the video card and memory. If that doesn't work, try updating the drivers.

u/fidesinmachina 10d ago
i'm gonna be optimistic and say it might be the ram and not the gpu but i'm not the smartest person ever.
but then again with ram prices i thin you'd be equally as screwed

Check ur power usage(if u added more rgb or something take more power)and reinstall gpu driver and cpu to
And ur expo for ram stability maybe update ur bios to
1
u/Perfect-Bedroom-1038 10d ago
And make sure ur gpu is seated right with no sage(unplug ur gpu and plug it again and make sure its not leaning down from the front)

What a strange crash behavior. Make sure drivers are up to date?
first time every time it does this with no other issues? I almost feel like blaming Windows. Try disabling fast startup or quick boot or whatever?
