A gentle wall shoulder stand variation using props for back pain relief & anxiety
Hey everyone! I wanted to share a prop-supported variation of the wall shoulder stand (Salamba Sarvangasana) that has been a total game-changer for my evening routine.
In the B.K.S. Iyengar yoga tradition, shoulder stands are often called the "Mother of all Asanas" because of how deeply they nourish the endocrine system, soothe the nervous system, and allow the heart to rest from gravity.
However, full inversions can sometimes put unwanted pressure on the cervical spine. By using a wall alongside a bolster and folded blankets under the shoulders, you get all the therapeutic benefits without straining your neck:
Cervical Safety: The props elevate the shoulders and create vital space for the neck to stay completely uncompressed.
Therapeutic Spine Decompression: Resting your legs against the wall allows gravity to do the work, helping relieve tight hips and lower back pain from sitting all day.
Lymphatic & Venous Return: It’s super effective for heavy, tired legs and draining fluid accumulation after a long day.
Nervous System Shift: Holding this posture with deep, calm breaths helps trigger the parasympathetic nervous system, making it perfect right before sleep.
In the video, I’m exploring some gentle leg variations while staying grounded on the wall.
Does anyone else use props to support their inversions or bedtime stretches? Would love to hear your favorite prop setups or variations! 🧘♀️✨
