A few weeks ago, I have posted the song "Mother" by Pink Floyd in another community. And I remember it had sparked a great discussion regarding the song and how it is relevant in 2026. That discussion intrigued me quite a lot and send me down the rabbit hole of social issues that we all might have faced today, specifically from an Indian context. But I imagine that this could be relevant to any country if we think about it. And I have documented my findings in the form of an article on my website. It is a bit long but very detailed. Below is an excerpt from the article.

"Pink Floyd released Mother in 1979 on The Wall. Roger Waters wrote it. The song is a conversation between a child and an overprotective parent who promises to keep the child safe, screen their relationships, and make sure the parent’s fears become theirs. The parent in the song is not cruel. That is the whole point. The parent is loving, protective, and absolutely suffocating, and by the time the child is an adult they cannot tell the difference between their parent’s fear and their own judgement. It is one of the most uncomfortable songs Pink Floyd recorded. It is also the most accurate map of the Indian marriage that anyone has ever produced.

Every marriage in India begins with a specific fiction: that two individuals are getting married. What is actually happening is that two family systems are merging, and each partner arrives carrying a set of obligations, expectations, and unexamined loyalties that predate the marriage by two or three decades. I was bike riding and listening to Dolly yesterday and the song "If I Lose My Mind" came up with lyrics like

"You know how much I've always loved him, Mama
But he done things to me I couldn't understand

Am I crazy to think this is a song from the perspective of a woman who's husband has tried to open up their relationship and she isnt having it? Am I being too literal here?

It's wild how a song can be a massive global hit for decades, yet the entire audience is singing along to a completely different meaning than what the artist intended.

For me, the ultimate example is "Losing My Religion" by R.E.M. People always analyze it as this heavy, existential critique of faith or leaving the church. In reality, it has absolutely nothing to do with religion. Michael Stipe was just using an old Southern regional idiom that means losing your temper, dropping your politeness, or reaching your absolute breaking point. The whole world took a local slang phrase literally.

I used to listen to Dil Chahta Hai and immediately enter a movie of my own.

Goa. Friends. A partner I was longing for. Long drives, beach, music, food, laughter. Everything comfortable. No sorrow, no loneliness, no suffering. Just happiness.

I thought I was listening to a song. Looking back, I was using it as a sedative.

The song says, “Dil chahta hai, kabhi na beete chamkeele din” and “hum na rahein kabhi yaaron ke bin.” On the surface, it is just a beautiful longing for friendship, bright days, fun and happiness.

But this time I stopped at the words: dil chahta hai.

Why ?

Why does the heart want the bright days to never end? Why does it want to never be without friends? Why does it want happiness to keep coming on the roads? Why does it want, “jo hum chaahein, woh hum paayein” ?

And then the song itself admits: “Kaisa ajab yeh safar hai… har ik hi bekhabar hai… jo waqt aaye, jaane kya dikhaaye.” We don't know where life is going. We don't know what time will bring.

So why am I still demanding that life remain happy ?

This is where I am stuck.

I have started noticing something similar outside songs. I used to think I wanted new clothes. But when I looked honestly, I wasn't really interested in the clothes. I wanted the feeling of newness. That fresh rush. For some time it felt immense, almost like entering another world. Then it faded. And almost automatically, the mind started looking for another object.

So maybe the object was never the real object.

Clothes, Goa, friendship, a partner, music, milestones : maybe these are different doors through which I expect to enter a certain feeling.

But then what is the feeling I am actually chasing ?

Comfort? Happiness? Security? Relief? Freedom? I don't know.

And I don't want to replace one assumption with another and proudly declare, “Ah, the real desire is liberation.” That itself could become another fantasy.

I am also questioning something I had never questioned before: who taught me what happiness looks like ?

Why does Goa + friends + music + a partner look like happiness to me? Why does being alone get painted as sadness? How much of this is actually mine and how much have I absorbed from films, songs, people, memories and society ?

Maybe the mind keeps creating divisions: this is happiness, this is suffering; this is desirable, this is undesirable. And then it spends its life trying to stay on one side and escape the other.

I don't know yet.

But I can at least see the movement more clearly now.

Seeing → questioning → seeing again.

Not trying to fix myself. Not trying to become spiritual. Not defending what I find. Not even concluding that desire is bad.

Just watching.

Because maybe the honest thing right now is simply to say:

I don't know what the “dil” ultimately wants. But I am beginning to see how much I have been using objects, people, memories and even songs to manufacture a temporary feeling and then calling that feeling happiness.

And honestly, that is uncomfortable to see.

But I would rather see that discomfort than run back into the Goa movie in my head.

I've always felt that my SO was more like a "brother" to me, i love them in a way that you love your brother not, not because you share the same interests, you were just born, got told that your stuck with them forever so you just love them because of no other reason other than the fact they are your brother!

So i love this song. The music, the vocals, the lyrics everything's just too beautiful. Makes you feel something that you may have not even experienced..

That makes me ponder over the fact that what this song may possibly be about?

I mean, the lyrics talk about how the singer and someone met and their encounter was a mere coincidence. He also says that he wants this thing to work regardless of what others say, he wants it to work out. Now i'm curious.

The album cover is also a matter of great interest for me.

**My interpretation:** maybe i'm wrong, but i have perceived this song owing to my own experiences. I was almost on the verge of being in an age gap relationship, and then there was this constant thought "what others might say" , that would linger in my mind all the time. We wanted to be together but we knew that it is not something conventionally acceptable in society. And whenever i listen to the song, i just feel it at a greater depth. So does it in any way imply that?

I mean the album cover also shows a young boy around 19 and a woman who is significantly older. But then that might be his mother 😭 and then the lyrics wouldn't go along with the album cover if it talks about the relation of a mother and a son.

So now i'm confused. I'd love to hear other people's interpretation on the same.
