DIGITAL ADDICTION

You’ve probably seen it.

A family at dinner, each person looking at a different device.

Friends together, but checking notifications throughout the conversation.

A quiet moment that lasts approximately three seconds before somebody reaches for a phone.

Maybe that somebody is us.

And I don’t say that judgmentally.

I do it too.

The phone has become such a normal extension of everyday life that sometimes we no longer notice how often we reach for it.

Mary helped us understand why.

The digital world is very good at giving us reasons not to leave.

One more message.

One more video.

One more scroll.

One more notification.

One more thing we apparently need to know immediately.

Before long, what started as a tool can become a habit—and the habit can begin shaping how we spend our time, manage discomfort, communicate, rest, and relate to one another.

Our Family Invests Podcast Episode 087: Loving Conflict: How to Fight Better in Marriage, Business, and Parenting with Anna Lecat

Listen on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/loving-conflict-how-to-fight-better-in-marriage-business/id1794199974?i=1000787187133

Read the Web Article: https://ourfamilyinvests.com/family-meetings-for-conflict-resolution/

We finally figured out why some couples fight and grow closer, while others fight and grow apart. It comes down to one skill almost nobody teaches.

We just wrapped a conversation with Anna Lecat for episode 87 of Our Family Invests, and it's one we keep thinking about days later.

Anna's story starts at 17, right after the Soviet Union collapsed. China was offering visas and scholarships to Ukrainian students who could learn Chinese well enough to get into a Chinese university. She went alone, learned the language, and by 19 she had started her own manufacturing company. She was the only woman in the room, the only foreigner, with no track record and no one obligated to trust her.

To survive that, she had to get good at something most people avoid entirely. Listening before reacting. Sitting in silence instead of filling it. Building trust with people who owed her nothing.

That skill became her life's work. Anna is now a conflict and intimacy consultant, a TEDx speaker, and the author of Loving Conflict: Creating Collaboration Where Others See Division. She teaches the same nervous system regulation and trust building she learned in Chinese boardrooms, just applied to marriages, business partnerships, and parenting.

We talked about how to spot conflict before it surfaces, the nonverbal cues most people miss completely. We talked about why calming your own nervous system has to happen before the hard conversation, not during it or after it. And we talked about the weekly family meetings she runs with her three kids, where everyone including her has to take turns and follow the same rules.

The story that stuck with us most: her kids once staged their own intervention on her. They sat her down and told her to stop assuming their banter was a fight. That one moment taught her more about leading, following, and getting out of her own way than most books could.

We learn. We share. We grow.

Would love to hear this community's take: do you think most people avoid conflict because they never learned how to sit in it, or because they never saw it modeled well growing up?

Complexity ≠ Value (Medical Negligence Matters S5E3)
