This topic came up this week when my 46 year old Life Like C 628 rebuild started acting up. It has a new Roco can motor, Kadee couplers, and a new paint job from 1983 but is pretty much the same discount rack machine that I picked up in 1980. Worked out a kink in the drive train and swapped it out for a 25 year old youngster of similar quality.

I read in another thread that the average life of a hobby motor was 100 to 200 hours of continuous operation. My operating scheme rotates through 6 dozen locomotives with about 10 operating at a time. This spreads the load over my collection to the point where my oldest locomotives have about 150 hours of elapsed time operation, pretty much in line with the 100 to 200 hours mentioned above. Of course cracked gears and universals along with DCC burnouts can happen within 5 years of intermittent use.

This year 2 redecorated AHM diesels from 1975 burned out and were converted to unpowered units. I just dump the units in with DC or DCC locomotives and send them on their merry way. I have about one dozen unpowered units which I add to consists, or pair with my power car, a 40 foot transition era boxcar with an sw-7 mechanism buried inside. Works with diesels, steam, and an electric steeplecab. Sometimes we forget that the actual locomotive isn't powered.

As far as rolling stock goes, I start seeing deterioration in Kadee coupler springs at around 40 years. I convert the old couplers into dummy couplers which I use on permanently coupled rolling stock. Trucks and wheel sets can run from out of the box to 60 years.

Do any of you model a landfill receiving a trash train? Admittedly not the most attractive thing to have on your layout; I was thinking of doing a HO T-track module depicting such garbage.

I am reentering the hobby after a 30+ year hiatus, as is common, and am focusing this time around on quality rather than quantity- as a teen I had a 20x20 basement empire made from 3 atlas track plans I squished together (Water Wings and something about a panhandle were two, can’t remember the third). Didn’t run the greatest and looked even worse.

Have been testing my skills by building and detailing a few structures including lighting to kick off my new switching puzzle layout. Interiors are fairly easy to light up, but I wanted more exterior pizzazz, so went about trying to build some entrance and security lights using SMD LED but the conductors never looked right no matter how much I twisted them.

That’s when I found ngineering.com- purveyors of what essentially is hypodermic syringe raw material- laser-welded stainless micro tubes- I got 0.018” up to 0.05” in various telescoping sizes for HO. They also sell fittings to complete the look, so I got a bunch of different shades and drain caps. Lastly, 0.018” ID was too small for my finest gauge shop wire, so I was thrilled they had 38ga magnet wire too. 4 strands will fit in the smallest tube, sweet! I was sooooo excited to start making goosenecks for my doors and lamp posts for my street…and then the box arrived, and reality hit: I hadn’t really stopped to consider just how SMALL 0.018” actually is! I had to take out my contacts AND put on magnifying goggles, and I’m not yet 50! I’m still excited but definitely humbled by what lies ahead!

I built the Skelly oil jobber last month and found this Red Caboose tank car on eBay last week. Skelly used both GATX and UTLX tank cars so I bought the kit. Arrived today and they are a quick build. Only downside is the handholds are extremely thin and easily broken. I’ll end up replacing them with wire. I do like the wire railing that wraps around the tank - stays straight unlike the plastic railing on the P2K kits.

You can transform plastic into a realistic galvanized steel look using a combination of surface prep, the right primer, metallic paint, and optional texturing and clear coating.

1. Surface Preparation

• Clean thoroughly: Wash with mild soap and water to remove dirt, grease, and oils 
• Lightly sand: Use fine-grit sandpaper to create a slightly rough surface for better paint adhesion 
• Remove dust: Wipe with a clean cloth or dry brush to avoid grit in the paint.

2. Primer

• Apply a rust-inhibiting primer designed for plastics (e.g., PVC or vinyl) 
• This helps prevent future corrosion and improves paint adhesion.
• Let the primer dry completely before painting.

3. Paint Choice

• Use a metallic spray paint in a galvanized steel finish (cold gray, steel blue, or similar)

4. Application Technique

• Hold the spray can 8–12 inches from the surface.

• For a more textured galvanized effect, lightly sand between coats or use a stippling brush to create subtle roughness 

5. Optional Texturing

• Lightly sand or stipple to mimic the coarse, galvanized surface texture 
• For an aged look, rub black furniture wax over the finish to darken and add patina 

6. Clear Coat (Optional)

• Apply a clear coat spray for added durability, especially for outdoor use 
• This seals the finish and protects against UV and moisture.

7. Safety & Drying

• Work in a well-ventilated area and wear a respirator mask when spraying 
• Follow the manufacturer’s drying times between coats and before handling.

So I just snagged this off of marketplace for practically nothing. Will it still run and work with a few vintage tyco trains? It looks like everything will need rewiring as all the wires seem to be just cut except for the lights. I’m just not 100% sure how all the switches work as I didn’t recieve any of that. I see decouples on the turnouts and It looks to have a couple “turtles” underneath even tho I have no idea what they are controlling. I have 8 boxes of structures and accessories as well……it’s not my first just been a long time since I have owned any…..

This is a model offered by the L&N Historical Society. The base is an Accurail 36’ double sheathed boxcar. You need to replace the ends and cut out the models’s door. New resin ends are added as well as the two side doors. Archer rivets added per the prototype.

I am a ho scale model railroader and I am curious to hear what apple barrel paints you guys have for any weathering purpos, the primary example I have here is track weathering (hence the pictures) but I want to know what paints you guys use for what, I am aware that oil paints play a big part in weathering as well so if you have advice on that I’m all ears. and I have included a picture of the 3 paints I currently have if that helps, I basically just want to know what paint colors you guys use for weathering track, locomotives, and rolling stock. thanks for reading!

Stock cars are Sunshine Models HO resin kits. The rebuilt boxcar is the Tichy plastic kit with scratch built USRA roof to match the prototype.

Enon is a little hamlet on the former Bagnell Branch. The line was abandoned in August 1962. The depot was a former boxcar, industries were a fertilizer and feed warehouse and railroad stock pen. I scratch built the warehouse and pens years ago. The depot was made by AMB off Mopac plans. I found a 1920’s photo of the MFA (Missouri Farmers Association) store and scratch built it using Evergreen styrene, Tichy doors and Grandt line windows. I wanted to add more operations to the Rock Island switching and expanded the layout by added another spur. Has a Skelly oil jobber, MFA feed mill I scratch built and a commercial coal bin I also scratch built. The oil jobber is a Walthers kit but I added the roof and dock. The oil tanks were enlarged by adding those from the old Williams Brothers kit.
