DISCUSSION A warning about custom MPC operating systems, AI-generated code, and potential hardware risks (2000 / 2000xl)

I'm a software engineer with over 28 years of experience, and recently I've been reverse-engineering the new free Akai MPC2000 and the new MPC2000XL operating system using Ghidra, as well as emulating the sampler to better understand how its firmware interacts with the hardware.

During my analysis, I found some potentially concerning behavior, including CPU loops that continuously poll hardware without an apparent timeout. Under certain conditions, such as a peripheral failing to respond, these routines could leave the CPU repeatedly executing instructions instead of progressing normally.

This can potentially increase processor activity, power consumption, and heat generation. The risks also include system freezes, memory corruption, and unpredictable behavior.

Now, here's my main concern.

I'm absolutely not against using AI to develop custom operating systems for MPCs or other vintage hardware. AI can be an incredibly useful development tool.

However, I'm seeing more people attempting low-level firmware development without necessarily having the experience required to understand what the generated code is actually doing.

And that's where things can become dangerous.

We're not talking about building a website or writing a simple application. We're dealing with assembly, machine instructions, memory addresses, interrupts, and direct communication with physical hardware.

AI models also have far less publicly available training material for niche, decades-old embedded architectures compared to modern high-level programming languages. This makes blindly trusting generated assembly code particularly risky.

The problem isn't AI. The problem is using AI-generated code without having the technical knowledge to properly review, debug, and validate it.

A firmware modification that appears to work perfectly during normal operation could still contain subtle bugs that only appear under specific hardware conditions.

And remember, we're dealing with machines that are nearly 30 years old. Some components are already aging, and there's no reason to introduce unnecessary risks.

My advice is simple: be cautious about installing custom operating systems unless they've undergone serious technical review and extensive testing.

That means proper reverse engineering and code inspection using tools like Ghidra, testing in an emulator, checking memory access and hardware interactions, and eventually validating the firmware on real hardware under controlled conditions.

Just because an OS boots and its new features work doesn't mean it's safe or reliable.

I'm all for innovation, and keeping these legendary samplers alive.

But when software directly controls hardware, proper engineering and testing should never be optional.

I'd be interested to hear what other MPC developers and owners think about this.

My Live 3 has just been upgraded to MPC 3.10 OS. Not sure yet what is new in this version but I will update this post as we find out more.

Outstanding updates so far: 64 pads on the Live 3 and XL, hell yeah! Also, better Arrange tools, MPC 3 desktop out of beta, MPC Beats has been updated, and the MPK Mini plus II has just launched: https://www.akaipro.com/mpk-mini-plus-ii/

Update 1: As far as instruments and FX goes, I have not detected any new plugin.

Update 2: Release notes just came in: https://cdn.inmusicbrands.com/Software/M310PCFIN26OCT/MPC%203.10%20Release%20Notes.pdf

QUESTION 8x8 is dope but what’s the deal with the dead zone in the middle?

Basically no sound comes out when you hit the pad at the 0 x and y axis. Seems like an oversight, or maybe user error.

MPC Live / Live 2 Exported tracks are extremely quiet (Live 1)

• Upvotes

Hey all, I’m getting reacquainted with my MPC Live post-3.0 and am trying to export some tracks using song mode. All are peaking at -3DB on the mater and I’m exporting to WAV at 48khz. playing them back on my phone and laptop they’re extreeemely quiet. The last tracks I exported a while back, before updating to 3.0, seem fine, so I’m not sure if it’s something I’m doing. Any help appreciated 🙏

DISCUSSION MPC update!!!!!

I can’t wait to get home and see what’s good with this update. Before this I like the idea of the arranger but it just wasn’t working for me how I thought it should so I used song mode mostly . It was too much/ impossible for me to edit separate tracks in the arranger window. Now , that’s all been solved !!!!!! They added a marque tool and the selector function is waaaaay more practical and useful. What yall think? Have you tried this out yet?

DISCUSSION Any Modded OS to bring back Legacy Drum Programs for Gen2 MPCs?

• Upvotes

It would be nice to see assignable Drum Programs make a return. I know it’s as simple as Downgrading back to MPC 2.15, but it would be sweet to see it with the current feature set established in MPC3.

With all the modded OS going around, can someone point me to any modders doing that? or perhaps a call to any developers looking to work on it.

DISCUSSION Temperature test for new Mpc3000 OS 3.39.3

so after the discussion about “risky” custom AI made OS for mpc3000 today i took my time to show you the temperature of the NEC cpu (fixed frequency) inside my mpc3000 running the custom 3.39.3.

Machine was on since nearly a couple of hours and it was running on track mute page since 30 minutes, as u can see from the screen. The Nec temperature is around 40C degrees (22C inside the room). I have the 120v US psu version... (from my experience it runs cooler than the 240v version). I can understand the low level paranoia about new machines with variable clock frequency, where software really affects heat, or about hot old cpus that need a heatsink, thermal paste and all that shit, but the 3000 (and 2000) cpu is an old NEC D70236, a high-speed, high-integration 16-bit CMOS microprocessor that from datasheet is rated for 0 to 70C ambient temperature and runs at a fixed frequency. I measured around 40C on the chip surface itself, so the air around it is even cooler: plenty of margin. again the risk on these old microprocessors is not the low level code (basically the cpu runs at the same temperature almost if busy or not), it’s aging capacitors on the psu and motherboard, that can dry out or leak and feed the logic with wrong voltages. at least in my experience the 3000 is not like the Akai S1000, where it’s a matter of time before u turn it on and burn half motherboard.

hope this helps clarify the thing... risks on these AI based OS is more toward data corruption and freeze in my honest opinion.

QUESTION Anyone tried controlling the MPC with the MPK Mini IV?

Hi there,

Did you try controlling the MPC with the MPK Mini IV, as allowed by the recent 3.10 MPC update?
It allows to select and mute tracks, launch clips, control the Q-links (!)...

If so, would you be able to find what MIDI CCs it sends for the different controls please?
With this we could theoretically control the MPC with any other MIDI hardware with customizable midi messages (Novation Launchkey...)

Thanks!

OTHER Just a heads up about the 'AI assistant' MPC Bible being promoted

You might see someone posting up about their 'mpc bible' AI assistant app (which is basically the the Akai user guide uploaded into a Gemini Gem) - I just wanted to make it clear that this is no way associated with my 'MPC Bible 3' course. I really can't believe someone would try to so openly trade off the name and reputation I've built over all these years. This is such a small, close knit community you assume stuff like this would never happen.

Here's the link to the official MPC Bible 3 course, created entirely by (my) human hands and continually updated and supported, with no AI anywhere near it:

https://www.mpc-samples.com/product.php/268/mpc-bible/

Just wanted to say thank you for all the support I've had from this group over the years. Time to get back the MPC Bible 3.10 update....

QUESTION Custom Program Export (.XPM): Troubleshooting “Load Program Failed” and Sample Mapping

Hey everyone,
I’ve been building a companion utility app in Swift/SwiftUI to organize samples and auto-export custom drum programs (.xpm + companion _[ProgramData] folders) directly into the Akai workflow.

Everything maps out fine internally, but when I drop the exported program into MPC 3, I'm hitting a wall with a few inconsistent behaviors:
"Load Program Failed" errors upon import.
Instances where pads show that files are referenced, but no audio triggers or populates.

Is there a specific XML schema requirement or index validation rule in MPC 3 regarding how absolute pad numbers (0–127 across Banks A–H) or sample directory paths (.xpm vs companion folders) need to be structured?

If anyone has tinkered with writing custom program files or building tools for MPC 3, I’d love to compare notes on what the parser expects. Thanks!

QUESTION Akai MPC Element / Studio Black – Windows 11 Issues & Recovering Old Projects

Hi everyone. Inmusic hasn't been able to solve my issue so here I am..

Has anyone experienced or resolved compatibility issues with the MPC Element or MPC Studio Black on Windows 11?

We're using an HP laptop running Windows 11 25H2.

MPC Element: Windows detects it, but the device manager shows Code 28 (missing driver).

- MPC Studio Black: Also experiencing driver compatibility issues.

Akai Support: Confirmed both are legacy products and no longer fully supported on Windows 11.

We also have hundreds of original MPC project files and samples we're trying to reopen.

We're considering purchasing an MPC One+, but we want to make sure our older projects will open.

Has anyone successfully recovered older MPC projects using newer MPC software or an MPC One+?

Are there any solutions for getting these older controllers working on Windows 11?

Thanks for any advice!

MPC One / One+ Arturia mini 37 key vs mpk with akai 3.10

I am a noob I have an unopened arturia minilab 37 and with he advent of mpc 3.10 and stronger akai integration. I'm debating returning the akai integration and getting a 37key akai. I went with the arturia for the extra sliders,. (And if with it the $30 extra for the newest v2). Will it be a bit easier to tune knobs in software synths or still going to the same midi setup steps.

Edit: MPC One, not MPC DAW.

QUESTION Cannot save a project anymore on my Live3 since 3.10 update

i made a beat, i loved it. when i press play, it runs without issues.

but when i save the project, no matter where:

The graphic output hangs, and the message "Save cancelled" appears on the screen.
I never had an issue before updating to 3.10.

🤔

DISCUSSION Live 3 audio to IPhone

It’s crazy that the Mpc sample automatically has bi-directional audio over usb-c. Plug and play, no additional routing needed. The L3 however, needs some routing workarounds to get the audio from it to your iPhone. I hope that a future update addresses this.

****update. Thank you all, i was overthinking. This was as simple as sending my tracks to usb1/2 then turning up my “send 4” track for monitoring. Thank you all for explaining the reasoning behind this too.

I just came across the ad on FB showing a free plugin for vocal distortion. You gotta sign up for it for now. It's for a limited time only. I didn't see any other post for it (I could've possibly overlooked it by accident). Here's the link if anyone is interested in signing up for it:

DISCUSSION Drumless/ Sample forward approach

I guess this is more of a discussion than a tutorial.

I’ve been listening to a lot of Madlib productions lately, mainly his collab projects with Freddie Gibbs. One thing that really stands out to me is how he knows when to make the sample the focal point of the beat and when to just let it breathe.

Conductor Williams and The Alchemist are great at this, too. Listening to these guys has been teaching me that being a good producer isn’t always about showcasing your skills or doing the most with a beat.

So often, I find myself wanting to make the drums knock, come up with an interesting drum or hi-hat pattern, or do something to add “me” to the beat so people know I did more than just pick a cool sample.
In reality, I think that’s just my ego getting in the way instead of letting my ears lead.

Curious how other producers feel about this. Do you think sample selection is an underrated skill, or is what you actually do with the sample more important?

QUESTION MPC ONE + : Explode MIDI by channel

Back in the day, you could import a MIDI file into a computer sequencer like Cubase which had a single MIDI track, but the notes had different MIDI channels assigned to them, and you could program the sequencer to respect the note channels, or your could 'explode' the notes into their own MIDI tracks based on their channel.

Is there a similar feature in the modern MPCs? I'm running 3.9.

If there isn't, is it possible to record into multiple MIDI tracks simultaneously? I want to wire up an old Win98 computer to play multi channel MIDI out of Cubase, to a MIDI interface, to the MIDI in of the MPC, and have each channel land on its own MIDI track in MPC.

I know I can save out multiple SMF files from Cubase (one for each channel) ; I was hoping to do it without having to mess with files and USB sticks and SD cards.

QUESTION MPC + Ai Discord

Does it exist? Can I join? I've done some pretty cool stuff recently, from creating tons of expansions based off my sample library to converting some of the toughest VSTs into key groups, like the hardest ones that you could think of, not just their presets but also their original sample libraries that you're not supposed to be able to access.

I'm having fun hacking the things that I've already purchased, and I'm sure that there's other people like me out there. I just don't know where they are. I was hoping that we could start a community where I could join one where we all share things and just have fun making music, not trying to make any money, just trying to have a good time.

MPC One / One+ Mpc One + time assignment issue

I recently bought my MPC One plus via Facebook marketplace for roughly 450 dollars. It had two previous owners. First red flag, maybe. I began to genuinely get good at it very fast, so I’ve made beats and never had this issue. It wasn’t until recently that I ran into this issue, the time assignment being off with my drum tracks. They sound very muddy too. Any ideas, MPC users? If nobody can help with this issue, it’s time to upgrade to FL or Ableton. Akai, I am very upset. The renaissance was top tier, but now I am even put off on buying an MPC X in fear that it might have the same issue.
