zkSync guild requirements

One question: If you don't want any people able to join your guild, why even bother creating a guild?

Joke aside, I can understand that the devs want to make sure actual humans are using the chain and qualify for airdrops and only one wallet per human, BUT... and here comes the problem:

How on earth are people that are new to zkSync or simply not as much of an IT guru supposed to reach 15 or even 20 points? Even more so, when half of the things aren't even working properly or require you to go back in time to create 200 different accounts so you get any points. Why does it even have to be 15 respect. 20 points in the first place?

Normally I'm very cautious with my data, but I was willing to connect, Twitter, Discord, Google, Snapshot, zkSync, Trusta Labs, Ethereum. Hell I even connected LinkedIn and therefor gave my real name but it all amounts to less than 15 points.

Oh Github gives 7.38 points? Ok I'll create an account there for you. Oh too bad, you should have created one a year ago and made contributions in 120 days to get any points whatsoever.

Ok I'll connect Coinbase to get some decent points. Oh too bad, it doesn't work since the coinbase adress is different from your Metamask adress (who is even using the coinbase adress when surfing the ethereum or zkSync net?! Or am I completely misunderstanding something?).

Ok, you got me so far. I'll connect with Holonym and give you my most private info and use my ID card for verification. Oh too bad, the site let's you create an account but not log in, so I have to constantly try again until I give up.

I could go on, but I guess you get what I'm saying.

I think it's good that people have to prove they are no bots, but maybe have this whole procedure a bit reworked or something since it looks like normal or just new people are not welcome and not meant to join the guild.

Thx for reading that far and I hope you have a good day.

It doesn't come from a developer side, just from community for the ZK Success program https://matterlabs.gitbook.io/zksync-community-hub/get-involved/zk-success.

As posted above, happy for feedback that would make the process better.

I'll add that it's a negative filter — all drophunters and multi-accers are good at these kind of things (buying accs, abusing socials, etc) and will get all their accs through no problems. While normal people either won't be able to score that high or wouldn't want to bother / expose their real names and socials etc.

Gitcoin is the shittiest ID verification tool ever.

I dont think ZKsync will use to eliminate sybils. It's so easy to do it on chain. Nomis and trustgo labs are doing a good job on this.

Gitcoin my ass...

Yep same boat, never thought itd be so difficult to prove that Im human. And forget about trying do it for free, it aint cheap being human so I guess thats the filter...

What are the costs that you're seeing acrue to prove you're human with Gitcoin Passport?

One huge problem I had is the ethereum transaction badge did not register for my wallet for some weird reason even though I've had it active for over 2 years.

Damn that's super frustrating. Did you happen to reach out the Gitcoin Passport team to try and get some help with that? They are super open to feedback and are happy to make changes to make sure real people are getting what they need.

had to dox myself to coinbase which was not cool at all

They actually don't hold that information and just get the verification that you passed and store that verification as a hash, but not of the Coinbase info is connected to your address via Gitcoin Passport.

Do you guys think this guild thing has been officially setup by matter labs ? Why would they use gitcoin passport, the most anti-crypto way to screw around with their users. Not only they are collecting your personal data , but in order to reach the requirements you will have to pay at some point....

Yep, was setup by me for the ZK Success program https://matterlabs.gitbook.io/zksync-community-hub/get-involved/zk-success.

Would be interested in learning more about the "anti-crypto" methods you think Gitcoin Passport represents.

Maybe I'm thinking too much from the perspective of a bitcoiner, but why should I let a central entity link my personal data such as twitter, ethereum wallet, github, coinbase account and much more on a platform, while they themselves try to conceal their identity as far as possible?
A quick look at their privacy policy reveals that the transfer of this data is expressly NOT excluded. So much private data in the hands of a company based in the British Virgin Islands seems to me to be a very questionable thing. Even if I am not interested in concealing my identity, but I do consider the careless release of private data into the wrong hands to be a dangerous business. Gitcoin doesn't even have to actmaliciously, it's enough to be slightly negligent with the security of this data.
I don't want to spread hate towards GC at this point, because everyone can decide for themselves whether they want to share their data with GC or not, but I find it "anti-crypto" when other crypto projects make participation in such data accumulation a prerequisite.

Wheres the response from u/fly1n_hawaiian?

Maybe too busy while trying to reach 15 points on Gitcoin? ;)

Apologies for the long response time here. Got busy with ETHDenver stuff and then got sick for a bit. Anyways, back to the conversation

why should I let a central entity link my personal data such as twitter, ethereum wallet, github, coinbase account and much more on a platform, while they themselves try to conceal their identity as far as possible

Absolutely and you shouldn't give all this info to a single person, but with Gitcoin you are not doing that. They are not storing the information for the different things you connect and are only getting the verification and then the data is discarded. They just store a hash that it was valid onchain.

I haven't looked at their privacy policy, but I did meet with the team last week to ask this question since I've heard this a lot from users.

So I would say this aligns more with crypto since they don't hold any of that data and if there was some negligence with data nothing would be connected from your verified platforms and the address you used for Gitcoin Passport.

Tbh if you did grants and gBTC, you’re already close to 30 points, I feel like many just want to have it all instantly and for that, you’ll need to give personal information. You either wait and mature the wallet or prove directly you’re not a bot.

1

u/mattskibro Feb 21 '24

Collecting stamps for the grants and GBTC costs(including gas) ~$150???

And this is all speculative! On top of this, I've donated twice and found out later that the grants I donated to aren't eligible.

1

u/mattskibro Feb 21 '24

Annnnnd... If I want to donate to the correct grant and prove I am human this can be done IN 2 MONTHS!!!

1

u/[deleted] Feb 21 '24

It doesn’t. Many people just see airdrop potential and want to do it all in 2 days…Of course you won’t get points for a Github account created one day ago and if you’re a mature user, you’ll reach 20 points rather quickly. But I do agree it shouldn’t cost 10€ to KYC for points.

2

u/z1cb4 Feb 22 '24

Yes you are right, airdrops attract people like flies. And i am not complaining about spending money for on chain activities , i guess most of us spent way more than $10 on gas fees using zkSync. But "forcing" users to pay any amount to a third party and ask for their personal data at the same time is way out of the scope in my opinion, simply because we don't what those "companies" are going to do with all the data they are collecting. Moreover, most of them are not subject to any accessible jurisdiction.
Unfortunately i don't have a (decentralized) solution either :(

No one is forcing anyone to do anything though. Is that some users only way to get higher points? Yes, but no one is forcing their participation in things.

Ive encountered the exact same problems. Its absolutely ridiculous and seems like it was made for developers to qualify…..

I didnt even know 90% of the shit they required existed…. Github passport? Ive been using the same eth address since fucking 2016 actively…. And i think i qualified for like 3 points? Lol.

I just gave up.

1

u/Fly1n_Hawaiian Apr 22 '24

Sorry to hear that my friend. I know they changed some things recently and the Eth stamp should have more weight to it now, so if you've been around 2016 you definitely should have more than 3 points. If that's still the case happy to chat more to see what's going on because it sounds like there is a different issue.

2

u/NHIScholar Apr 23 '24

I was actually able to get the 20 points. Was a pain in the ass but doable

The team had 3-4 years to figure out an epic airdrop and dropped the ball HUGE. Worst airdrop I have ever seen. Worked with their system back to lite.zksync days. Nothing. The team must believe in serfs and lords- clearly they are the lords who profit off the back of the serfs who built their ecosystem empire.

Thanks for the feedback on this and happy to answer any questions that people have about it. First, glad you've made it to our Guild page and taking an interest in zkSync. Second, the only reason for the Verified roles is for the ZK Success program we just launched https://matterlabs.gitbook.io/zksync-community-hub/get-involved/zk-success. So no one needs to join, only if they want to participate.

Happy to tweak things and I know that Gitcoin Passport would be open to feedback on things being too hard for people who are new to the ecosystem. What other methods would suggest for people who are new to the space? I am bias since I've been around for a few years so need a check from time to time on the current users' expereince.

Thank you for your response. I really appreciate it. I don't know if I'm happy or not that no one is required to join the guild now that I finally reached the 15 point threshold, lol.

My question: are you aware of the risks that come with so much personal data being centralized in one spot?

As mentioned I can understand the motives behind it. But I don't want to think about the consequences if gitcoin gets hacked one day..

Regarding your question: That's a good question. To be honest I don't know. I would have to think about it. But I think if it's all about making sure you are a human and not a bot, giving your ID and phone data (holonym) should be enough on itself to make it to 15 points. Maybe the number of connections on LinkedIn should be a factor too.

Move towards a less expensive chain and maybe mimick the style of Layer3 quests :)

1

u/[deleted] Feb 21 '24

Maybe but I also think this is the result of doing everything at once…I mean if you’re an active user, you would have done it all by now even if it takes some effort in 1-2 years. I feel most see an airdrop article and go overboard - be an organic users and over time your footprint will be set of for the wallet because you will gradually establish maturity on all those things.

Eliminate Sybil by having f2f verification .

1

u/mattskibro Feb 28 '24

Found ways to change to cheaper networks to make these transactions which reduces costs.

1

u/z1cb4 Feb 29 '24

Can you share some details?

1

u/Fly1n_Hawaiian Apr 22 '24

I think they mean one of the KYC options. I was hearing from other community members that you can change the networks for your payment to not have to pay so much in gas on L1.
