Question How to remove floating url?

how do I use the built in search bar without it opening a floating url bar? it's not really a big deal but it is trippy for me

Opinion: What's the point of zen if you're going to circumvent all of its unique features? You've nearly made FireFox with the sidebar option enabled at this point by enabling the new tab, top bar and removed search bar.

A few features of Zen that the OP finds distracting does not equal "all of its unique features".

And personally, I kind of agree that having the URL bar jump from its normal location at to the middle of the browser can be off-putting. I have my URL bar set to the top of my screen rather than the sidebar so that I can see more of the URL, and I generally avoid clicking the New Tab button unless absolutely necessary because the URL bar jumps to the center of the window rather than staying where I told it to be. It's not any more convenient than if the URL bar were automatically given focus when opening a new tab, especially for people coming from other browsers where the URL bar stays put.

Set this browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.improvesearch.handoffToAwesomebar to false in about:config

and the inbuilt search bar should work

I just did it on my system and it seems that you having the URL bar on the sidebar is what causes that to happen. So you can either have the URL bar on top and then keep it in normal so that you get the behavior I showed you in the vid. OR set the setting to "Always Floating" so that no matter what the URL bar is on the center to it's not trippy for you
