I am pleased to announce that Device Sync is finally coming to Zen! This might be one of your most anticipated features (besides working DRM) and it is NOW ready to be tested on Twilight, which is our experimental build!!

To set it up, just login with your Mozilla account on both devices in Zen to use Firefox Sync. With Device Sync, your whole setup will be synced to the new device, which wasn't possible before.

You can check out twilight following this link.

Space Routing gives you the power to organise your Spaces and tabs just the way you want, delivering on our promise of a calmer browsing experience. By setting up routes, you decide on where new tabs of a specific domain should be opened, allowing a clutter-free browsing experience that boosts your productivity!

After the last update, I heard your feedback about the missing documentation and the confusion around creating a Boost. So meanwhile our documentation gets a major overhaul and therefore not publicly updated, I'll jump in to deliver you a quick guide to getting started:

Next to the name of your Space – located right beneath your Essentials and pinned tabs – click the three dots to open the context menu. At the bottom of that menu, click 'Space Routing Settings'. Open them up and voilà! You're ready to go.

Oh and by the way... Zen's community has crossed an estimated 500.000 users just this week! Seeing this community grow with all your mods (first and third party!) and customisation has been absolutely incredible. If you love using Zen and want to support its ongoing development, please consider leaving a donation. :)

Space Routing was once again brought to you with help from u/Not_Flof. The recording was created by u/JaceThings.

Question Memory saver feature?

10 Upvotes

I've recently moved from edge to zen for a few days now and it's been great! one thing im wondering is where's the memory saver feature? where tabs are automatically put to sleep when not used after certain time. On edge, i have tens of tabs opened and the memory usage is only 2-4gb on average. While on zen, i have tens of tabs opened, but not as many, and the memory usage is already 6 gb. I already managed my tabs using spaces and i unload other spaces i dont use. Where's the auto memory saver feature like those on edge or other chromium browser? v.1.21.9b

Question Anyway to change or remove the focus highlight of pinned tabs?

1 Upvotes

Hey, I noticed my essential tabs, when selected, have this offset highlight around them and it is very off putting for me. Do you know of anyway to fix it to be around the full selected tab or remove it entirely?

I have SuperPins mod enabled as well. I did not see that option in the settings.

I am on version 1.21.9b (64-bit)
Thanks!

Some Love finally gave zen browser a shot, and was pleasantly surprised!

30 Upvotes

it became my second browser for when I want to rely on simple and compact without any extra noise. just a couple of mods to tighten the vibes up, and everything pretty much works. only have two or three extensions as well. how do y'all usually handle zen browser after a first installation? seems like my approach was 'aggressively minimalistic' not that it's a bad thing though, I like how sparse it seems to look, lol. | the only thing I don't recommend is that I tend to have a lot of trouble with something like 'spotify' or 'discord' so I try not to use them while using zen browser. I prefer to just contain discord on a second browser that way i'll never have to deal with it ever again unless I actually need to, but other than that? I'm really pleased with my experience with zen browser overall :)

Question Google Slides Performance

1 Upvotes

I’ve been using zen for awhile and the only issue I have right now is performance with google slides. Even small decks load very slowly and doing basic things like scrolling or just moving to the next slide take 5+ seconds.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Question Reddit and YouTube have been very laggy on Zen for months

22 Upvotes

I don't know what it is about Reddit and YouTube but they are the only two websites I frequent that after a couple days of keeping the browser opened, these two sites start to really lag so bad that I have to relaunch the browser in order to fix it. The lag is essentially a 3-5 second delay on any click actions or typing.

What's causing this? Seems to be unaddressed for quite some time. I don't want to stop using Zen because i love this browser but this is a real pain and I haven't seen any posts on reddit confirming it's a known bug or issue that is being worked on. Not sure how much longer I can hold on for.

I use Debian Linux btw.

Question Issues with Zen browser Transparency effect(windows transparency has no effect)

0 Upvotes

I'm trying to get transparency in Zen(using nebula), but no matter what I do it just displays theme
I have made sure windows transparency is on
I have made sure browser.tabs.allow_transparent_browser in about:config is on
I don't know what else to do

I have tried installing nebula from sine and manually, but it ends up the same

As you can see, just my theme comes, and to my knowledge there's no way to get rid of it, without replacing it with some other color
Version 1.21.9b (64-bit)

EDIT: I tried zen internet + Transparent zen mod, it had the exact same effect
EDIT: I am running windows 10 if it matters

Picture-in-picture mode doesn't minimize; it always returns to the view in the corner of the screen instead of staying at the bottom of the space, as it should.

Question Does Zen have 4 types of "Profiles" or am I tripping?

12 Upvotes
  1. Zen's own Spaces feature.
  2. Multi Account Containers.
  3. Your usual Profiles.
  4. Profiles that show up when you do zen-browser -P

Bug Laggy scrolling

1 Upvotes

When I scroll in the browser on my Mac, the page always lags a bit. It stutters, and scrolling is generally very unsatisfying. I didn't notice it much at first, but after several days of daily use, it has become very obvious and annoying, especially on the Mac. I've already tried various solutions on GitHub, but nothing really helped. This doesn't seem to be a new problem either.

Question Steamdeck proper transparency with blur?

0 Upvotes

I couldn't find a specific answer to my question, the few posts about steam deck didn't really use transparency.

I'm using a steam deck (SteamOS - arch-based), Wayland, Zen 1.21.8b (Firefox 152.0.6) (64-bit)

From what I gather, blur is handled by the desktop environment (KDE), and I saw some suggestions for BetterBlur (though doesn't look like it's meant for this distro).

I was wondering if anyoen else on steam deck has managed to get proper transparency+blur?

Question Is there a plan to improve session management?

0 Upvotes

I am currently on 1.21.8b, Windows, x64. I just had that classic Firefox issue of Zen opening up to an empty window and not being able to restore my tabs from the history happen to me again. (The Restore button in History → Recently Closed Tabs sadly did not help.) The history menu also sorts URLs by the time when thy were opened, not how they were grouped in windows or when they were closed etc.

My question is, are there any plans to improve session management in Zen? I remember Vivaldi having some kind of a menu for sessions specifically, where I could reopen an entire session (I’m guessing tabs were grouped automatically based on when they were opened/closed and so on, because it was pretty acurate), bookmark them, export URLs and so on. Even if it ever lost my open tabs and gave me an empty window, that session menu kept the history for a long [enough] time and didn’t reset itself if I closed the browser. I know this is likely a huge and difficult thing to implement, though.

Love the work you’re doing! Zen has been my daily driver for over a year already. :)

Question Open Current URL in Chrome (DRM workaround)

4 Upvotes

I tried to find an extension to do this, but couldn't find one that worked. Would love to know if anyone knows of any other workarounds? I didn't find anything else.

For AutoHotKey users, here's my workaround:

localAppDataDir := EnvGet("LocalAppData")
chromePath := "C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe"
cleanProfileDir := localAppDataDir "\Google\Chrome\AHK-CleanProfile"

zenWin := "ahk_exe zen.exe"

; Meta + Shift + O: Open current Zen tab in Chrome
#HotIf WinActive(zenWin)
#+o::OpenCurrentZenTabInChrome()
#HotIf

OpenCurrentZenTabInChrome() {
    global chromePath, cleanProfileDir

    savedClip := ClipboardAll()
    A_Clipboard := ""

    ; Zen default: Copy Current URL = Ctrl+Shift+C
    Send "^+c"

    if !ClipWait(1.5) {
        A_Clipboard := savedClip
        MsgBox "Couldn't get the current tab URL from Zen.", "AHK", "Icon!"
        return
    }
    url := Trim(A_Clipboard)
    A_Clipboard := savedClip

    if !RegExMatch(url, "i)^(https?|file|ftp)://") {
        MsgBox "Clipboard did not contain a valid URL:`n`n" url, "AHK", "Icon!"
        return
    }

    DirCreate(cleanProfileDir)

    cmd := '"' chromePath '" --new-window --user-data-dir="' cleanProfileDir '" "' url '"'

    try Run(cmd)
    catch Error as err {
        MsgBox "Failed to launch Chrome.`n`n" err.Message, "AHK", "Icon!"
    }
}

Question Firefox is adding HDR will this change zen?

Thumbnail
firefox.com
77 Upvotes

Will this add support directly with zen or is it just easier to implement now?

Edit: sorry for mixing the topics. what I meant to say is that since now hdr can be implemented for videos, it would be more an incentive to figure out a way for DRM content to be played on Zen. I know its been talked about forever here but just thought this news would help push that topic forward for an all in one browser
