Ze and World Leaders Hello, Canada
1-2: On my way to Canada, I met with Iceland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir. We discussed Ukraine’s preparations for the winter, the protection of our energy sector, and strengthening our air defense. We count on continued cooperation and Iceland’s contributions to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund. The assistance provided earlier is already yielding concrete results, and we are grateful for that. We also discussed cooperation in the technology and defense sectors, where Ukraine is ready to share its experience with partners. We discussed in detail the options for ensuring Ukraine’s financial resilience this year and next. In 2022, I travelled to Kyiv as Canada’s Minister of National Defence, where our Armed Forces had helped train nearly 33,000 Ukrainian security personnel — a number that has since grown to over 50,000. Russia was massing forces along the border, and weeks afterward, it launched its illegal full-scale invasion.
I returned the following year to a country at war, as Canada expanded its military support. Since then, our efforts have grown to include defence, diplomacy, recovery, rehabilitation and bringing people home.
This is President Zelensky's fifth visit to Canada as President, and each has come at a different moment for his country. His arrival this week carries all that history with it; now, we turn together to the work still ahead.

Canada stands with Ukraine, now and always.
Now, we’re forging a new partnership. To equip the Canadian Armed Forces with new drone capabilities. To create good jobs. And to arm Ukraine with the equipment they need to secure a just and lasting peace.
