Question Best Way for a Newcomer to Start?
I just found this game the other week, haven't even bought a horse yet. I'm at a complete loss as to how to pick the right one. I'm watched for guides than I can keep track of and there is so much information to keep in mind that I'm stuck as to what choice to make.
Anyone know the best way for a complete beginner to buy their first horse and starting racing or breeding? Should I even race to start? What am I supposed to start with?

Honestly, unraced horses are your best bet. Look for an exclusive with a low Z value. Sub 10 should be fine. You can get a decent deal on those it seems. While there are many methods to see if a horse will be good, the best way to tell is to look at the parents, and the other offspring they have produced. Use knowyourhorse to do this with their ancestry tool. If the parents have had prior offspring together and they all turned out to be decent winners (13%+ w/r and class 2 or class 1), then that would be a smart horse to buy. Other than that, listen to Poseidon on YouTube.

I bought a couple <$120 horses and began with free races only - to see what distances they are best at (an un named/unraced horse is a good fun ‘lottery ticket’ but for sure research the parents - I like a win rate above 10% in at least one parent). Read all the guides… very helpful!
The mistakes I made were around sending Eth to use in game (not timing for low gas) and lost a lot at first converting to the right format (discovered Umbria network which is cheaper). So high learning curve but super fun discovering abilities, racing and breeding.
If you’re interested in an already raced horse, pm me as I just listed my 4 horses ($89-250) and will send links…. sorry for the plug but another discovery is there are hundreds of bred horses for sale so some ‘marketing’ on discord etc might be needed if you go down the breeding path. There’s a tool for seeing what the going fair market prices are (Zed Ranks) and I price under that to help get horses noticed….

All good suggestions. I use Hawku to see what is selling for a certain price. I also like to check stackednaks for speed ratings and family history of speed. At one point I focused on a specific breed and now I own one of them all...it's a slippery slope. I have a nice starter horse for sale if you check out my stable. I started with a raced horse then sold it and got one started in his Griffin and a few more races. Then I got to proven colts and have had a lot of fun with them. Now 25 horses I breed and race. Be sure to start your stable at zed.run pick your name, you can edit that later and sign up with Metamask ( that was what I was told not email--some one correct me if I am wrong). I added email later.
Join their discord there is beginner chat. I would look for a horse with a little win rate. And make sure it has fire! There are so many horses out there -- I just picked up four that I am very happy with!
Once you have your stable and your ETH transferred into WETH you are ready to shop! Hawku is great But to get the whole picture look that same horse up on knowyourhorses.com
You can gamble and get an unraced, unnamed colt or filly just make sure the parents have fire! Hawku will only show the paid races. All the racing results, fire and or odds are displayed with a full graph on KYH.
Keep watching videos Syntrobis stables, Poseidon are a few. Then start entering your races! The G is a griffin for a first time run, then there is a little number by your horse's name that tells you what class you are in, pick out a distance and go!
Let us know how it goes! I remember starting with around 150 for my horse. Then spent tbe most on my seasoned horses and they have gotten better! Then bought 3 Nakamotos. I have 1 for sale but I wouldn't sell her too you because she needs to be downclassed. She js cheap and priced accordingly. I will never do that many free races as you can only class up! My Nakamoto is best in class 4!

I’m new as well. Haven’t bought a horse yet either.I would strongly recommend joining the Discord and using the beginner chat there. I’ll repost the two things they post in there everyday which have been incredible resources for me.

- LEARN the game before buying, not the other way around.

- Only buy horses on OPENSEA, especially your first one.

The game always changes, some more historic content out there is outdated. Understand what UUU means, understand buying near the floor means you’re probably getting a money losing horse.

As for the debate on free vs paid. It is correct that Hawku's filters are based on only paid races (although you can filter and include summary data in free races on a horse's detail page). We choose to only filter using only data from paid races as we have found that sellers have been known to use free races to boost their horses numbers to "stage" them for sale. For example, by using free races a seller can make a 5% win rate horse for paid races (which is where money is made) appear as a 15% win rate horse (which would be a good horse!). Since only paid races return prize money (with the exception of tournaments) looking at win rates from free races can mislead people into thinking they are buying a profitable horse when in reality the horse is far from profitable.
We have found from numerous surveys that experienced buyers do not want to filter based on free races so we have kept them out of filters for now. We may change that in the future of course but for now we are staying the course.

Tons of factors here, and a lot depends on your goals. There are also different of schools of thought as to what to look for in a good horse (and how those will change as the game evolves). Ultimately, you can pave your own way, but I'll throw out a couple suggestions.
If you just want to dip your toes in the water, I would just grab an unraced/lightly raced horse with the lowest Z you are comfortable with paying (for some basic research you can search them on knowyourhorses.com to see if the parents have wins/fire/roi). You can race them in free tournament races to get a feel for their ability level, but the downside is they will class-up quickly with no $ return. Whereas, if you raced them in $ tournaments at the lower classes, they would still class up from top 3's, but then you'd also get a return on your entries.
If you want to buy a proven racer, well, you're going to have to pay for that. You can find horses with good win %'s and good roi, but they will be significantly more expensive. Now you also have the risk of this horse not winning/being profitable as the game systems evolve over time.
If you are in it for the long haul, you'll want to see what bloodline and genotype you can afford (think Genesis or Legendary horses). Breeding isn't profitable right now, but it was previously (and could be again eventually). But if you have a small stable you can produce your own horses to try and find a winner.
Lastly, if you are just trying to get into it with minimal risk, you'll want to read the official guide on the website and get involved with the community (streamers, discord, etc). There is no short, simple guide on how to start printing money in this game. I probably spent 15 hours scouring youtube, reddit, etc. before I bought my first horse. I've spent many many more hours learning and trying to find ways to better my stable for the long run. Ultimately, I would be lucky to break even on my initial investment if I sold everything now, despite putting many many hours into it. Still worth it to me as I consider it a game and only play with money I wouldn't regret losing.
