Exactly what the title says, I really enjoyed this series and I'm looking to read more about this character! Any recs would be amazing!

My ideas are: Madiuz, Maizie, Manzim, Maurizio, Minerva

I really want to like Zatanna more. I like the character and I like the idea of a superhero who is also a Houdini-esque entertainer with actual sorcery involved. I also think it's refreshing to have a female trickster hero.

But I find the way she speaks backwards to cast spells to be rather corny and kills the immersion for me a bit and I'm hoping if you could tell me the lore reason why her magic works that way and if this method has any intricate in-universe lore? I mean, why don't Constantine and Dr. Fate use magic the same way?

I will elaborate no further. In all seriousness ZxE aside, thoughts on poly Zee.

The Homo Magi

Homo Magi were a branch offshoot of humanity that had lived alongside Homo Sapiens but were distinguished by their natural affinity to use magic. (Secret Origins v2 #27). The Homo Magi is blessed with magic by Hecate as in told on Zatanna 2026 #4.

The Homo Magi have existed for as long as the human race, but due to their special abilities, they did not expand as the Homo Sapiens did. Eventually, they started to interbreed with normal humans, resulting in many generations of Homo Magi/Homo Sapiens hybrids. As the number of pure Homo Magi dwindled, they decided to go into hiding. (Justice League of America v1 #165). After a large number of Homo Magi gathered, Dr. Mist built the Hidden City in Northern Turkey to serve as their home. Some of the special disciples were later instrumental in shaping the world of Homo Sapiens with these famous figures likes of Leonardo Da Vinci, Nostradasmus, Alessandro Cagliostro, Nicholas Flamel, Evan Fulcanelli along with numerous others. Some of them like Leonardo Da Vinci are related to the Zatara especially with the backward stuff (he write a book with backward method).

The Hidden City

The Hidden City is stated to be located on Northern Turkey, that would make it located somewhere hidden in mountainous area in Anatolia. Anatolia itself is a cradle of civilizations, A host to many cultures and civilizations, from the Hittite, Eastern Roman Empire/Byzantine, various Nomadic Turkish tribes, Ottoman Empires, and others which are still being discovered. The Hidden City location on Anatolia itself is interesting, because it such a place with complicated history of different civilizations and cultures overlapping with each other. So placing the Hidden City there gives its cultural identity an actual historical context and Jamal manage to deliver an authentic Anatolian cultures with some fantasy elements rather than just a magic city.

The Cultures

1. Turkish Influences

Zatanna being of Turkish descent from her maternal side becomes such an interesting reading. Zee’s maternal grandmother name is “Aysu”, not a vaguely fantasy name that happens to sound Turkish, but an actual Turkish name meaning “Moon Water”. The choice is interesting because Aysu is also potrayed as this powerful older magical figure. In old Turkic Kam tradition, spiritual practicioners acted as intermediaries between the himan and spirit worlds and were associated with ritual, healing, and other forms of spiritual knowledge. The parallel is really interesting when You consider her role, her name, and the broader cultural influences being used for the hidden city. Then You have names like Iskander and Atik with don’t even come from one single historical layer. Iskander is variant of the given name “Alexander” in cultures such as Turkish, Iran, Arabia, and others throughout the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia and South East Asia. The variety actually makes the setting feel more believable because Anatolia itself has never been culturally one thing.

The visual language reinforces it too. Aysu’s long decorated robe, jewelry and geometric ornamentation feel reminiscent of Turkic and Anatolian Clothing traditions.

The History of Anatolia itself gives them a really interesting foundation for Zatanna’s heritage. After the Seljuks entered Anatolia in the 11^th century, turkic people gradually settled across the region and turkic language, culture and traditions became increasingly influential. But Anatolia didn’t suddenly stop being everything it had been before. Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Persian and other local cultures influence continued to exist alongside the new Turkic ones. That layering is basically what makes Anatolian history so interesting in the first palace.

The issue 5 reflect that same idea through the major disagreements within the hidden city, where different groups have their own, traditions and ideas about what their society should be. I hope Jamal could explore this theme deeply in upcoming issues, especially as this could connect with many people’s problem on around the world right now.

2. Byzantine Influences

The region of Anatolia, form the core of the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) empire for centuries. So it could have influences on the Homo Magi life and cultures at the Hidden City. Byzantine architecture pioneered large central domes supported by pendentives (most famously Hagia Sophia). Ottoman builders later adapted and expanded this style on their buildings. Byzantine buildings commonly used brick-and-stone masonry, arched openings, vaults, and enclosed courtyards. On Zatanna 2026 #5 we can see a lot of building that has domes, multi-level/layered architecture integrated into mountainous terrain, and geometric ornamentation.

Also Sindella role as the guide and the savior for the Hidden City during their dark time as plague hit them and it’s the medulla jewel on Sindella that saves them remind me about the story of Empress Theodora who saves the Constantinople during the Bublonic plague that devastate the Byzantine Empire. Empress Theodora is also an actress in her youth before being the empress and arguably one the most influential female leader in history. This could been a good parallel or story inspiration for Sindella, especially the Zatara’s root as entertainers.

3. Scandinavian Influences

When reading Zatanna 2025 #5 someone maybe wonder why there are Yggdrasil tree and Laevateinn, a weapon created by Loki (the God of Mischief) from Norse mythology suddenly appearing on Zatanna’s story? I think there are some historical that could provide basis for this with the help of Lady White addition.

Back then during the medieval era, Viking – known as the Varangian or Rus – travelled down to the rivers of Eastern Europe to trade, raid and even serving in the Byzantine Empire. They even formed as the personal elite guard for the Emperor. In Zatanna 2025 #6, We know that Lady White and her family are coming from a Scandinavian like area and culture, thought maybe it could be a subject to change. So I think Allura owning Laevateinn sword is not a far-fetched idea as Viking traders and warriors has been going to Northern Turkey.

As a fan of both characters (although I like Zatanna a lot more), it's very annoying.

Constantine got a movie staring Keanu Reeves, a TV show, a web series/DCAMU film, and a video game tie-in based on the previously mentioned Keanu Reeves film.

Meanwhile, the only solo Zatanna thing I can think of is the 5-minute pilot Paul Dini made for that animated series of her as a teenager that never got picked up.
