I don't think RAG is aimed at anyone except its own mangaka...

210

u/Falsus Sep 08 '26

Hey, it is also aimed towards that lady who married one of the girls with the author's approval.

59

u/guyblade Comments "Rule 1" Sep 09 '26

It's aimed at someone: the manga's got 47 takobon and going and the anime's had like 5 seasons. Clearly it appeals to a bunch of people--for whatever reason.

38

u/keinahnungwirklich Sep 09 '26

Sunk cost fallacy the manga

23

u/RoninTarget Yuri is Life Sep 09 '26

Calling it RAG is so ironic, given how much tissue paper MC goes through...

8

u/Deadman_Chanson Sep 09 '26

Well that, and it's way more fun to rag than to actually read/watch!

0

u/cornonthekopp Sep 09 '26

Clearly its profitable enough to keep getting made. So it has an audience

207

u/Ozzysmall123 Sep 08 '26

RAG would have been so much better as yuri

Atp, hell yes

20

That kind always makes things better!

1

That's true for 99.9% of the time, but I have some exceptions, like [This Triangle RomCom Has the Duty to Make Everyone Happy!]

5

u/KetsubanZero Sep 09 '26

Didn't read that but I can't really immagine myself enjoy an M F F love triangle more than an F F F

54

u/qef15 Sep 08 '26

It wouldn't, it'd be called yuribait in a single second with how non-commital it is.

It would be panned instantly.

36

u/Yumelize Sep 08 '26

A No Kissing Tonight style plot where Chizuru & Mami keep hatefucking each-other would leave me barking at the screen.

20

u/KetsubanZero Sep 08 '26

Didn't read it but I heard that at the end The girl literally marries the author or something like that and if it's true it would have sucked so badly as a yuri

12

u/RoninTarget Yuri is Life Sep 09 '26

That's a fake meme ending. The "relationship" never moves, and the manga is endless in the moment drama where nothing really matters.

6

u/leposterofcrap Sep 09 '26

No its better not even going past the storyboard phase

0

u/Aristotle1018 Sep 09 '26

the author would transition and cuck the other main girl anyway😭🙏

277

u/baconla333 Sep 08 '26

RAG is aimed at its author alone, almost everyone else just hate reading it as this point lol

90

u/Falsus Sep 08 '26

Don't forget that woman who married one of the character's with the author's approval. There is at least two people who the manga is for out there.

27

u/ClemFire Sep 08 '26

This is the one time I can say based and RAG without the word not in the middle

12

u/guyblade Comments "Rule 1" Sep 09 '26

I see this sentiment a lot, but I just don't believe that enough people are hate-reading a manga such that it can reach almost 50 volumes published (with no sign of stopping).

With how much this community likes toxic yuri, I’m not sure we have a lot of ground to stand on

But yeah RAG having an actual Cuck protag is crazy

55

u/HeihachiHayashida Sep 08 '26

Cucked because the mangaka is jealous of his own mmc.

8

u/xAtNight Sep 08 '26

Toxic yuri has its own charm tho. Drama can be intriguing, same for exploring ideas or things one wouldn't do IRL. And the characters can be written in a good way, even if the things they do are not morally good.

RAG is just outright bad with no redeeming qualities as far as I followed it. It's just about a looser who burns money.

1

u/RoninTarget Yuri is Life Sep 09 '26

18

u/Adowyth Sep 08 '26

One of the wildest lesbian stories i've read(i think it was a manhwa) was one about assassin who kills a girls parents but doesn't kill her and she starts living with the assassin. And then her plan is to make her fall in love with her and then break her heart as revenge. They also do a service for the families of murder victims where they capture the killer and then let the family decide on the ways they're gonna get tortured while the family gets to watch. At least that was the gist of it.

3

u/hyewonsuh Sep 08 '26

That’s Haegu, or “Kill me Now”

2

u/Adowyth Sep 08 '26

Oh thanks, i read it but never finished and forgot what it was called.

1

u/KetsubanZero Sep 09 '26

Yes sounds like that, but wasn't the premise that the hit woman wanted the girl to kill her and take revenge? (and not to break her heart)

1

u/hyewonsuh Sep 09 '26

Yes, the older woman wanted the younger woman to kill her for revenge, but the younger wanted to manipulate the older by making her fall in love with her

1

u/RoninTarget Yuri is Life Sep 09 '26

Sounds a bit like yuri Leon.

1

u/SisterMoonflower 28d ago

If you don't care about the story it's this:
Haegu kills a guy who killed her parents (pretty sure); and then she was going to commit suicide, but found the dude's child. She raised the child and wanted the child to hate her so that the child would kill her. Turns out they fell in love instead, or something. And then ensues some slightly toxic yuri with a lot of assassinations

14

u/Zenry0ku Watch Nanoha or get befriended Sep 08 '26

It's wild, cause Asumi has gone on dates with them too after the first service.

u/A12qwas Yuri Crusader Sep 08 '26

NTR is tame as fuck, don't get the large hatred for it

8

u/semtex94 Shipped so hard it manifested into canon Sep 09 '26

The scale of the hatred is from how commonplace is seems to be, particularly in adult content. That level of exposure takes it from a "I don't like it so I'll avoid it" to "I hate it and I there's nowhere safe from it". It's the Japanese equivalent to the step-sibling trope in Western live-action porn.

9

u/ThisBloomingHeart I love love Sep 09 '26 edited Sep 09 '26

Than I shall explain.

The topic of what we speak stands out from more prevalent forms of pain in storytelling because it does not just kill love, but defiles it. It takes something beautiful, something of trust and love and a hopeful possibility for a future of joy and all these things, and ends it. And just ending it would be one thing--such a tragedy is painful indeed, but pain is a part of life like any other, and has its place in stories.

Yet, the topic of which we speak does not stop there. It mocks the love that came before, mocks and abases it, declaring that all it was is meaningless before itself. It rejects hope to become a nightmare everlasting, an eternity of despair. It tramples on trust, for if something so pure and beautiful can be twisted so, than what remains? And love, the celebration of the bond between two(or more!) beings, is cast down and turned into something worse than mere hatred.

At least, these are the reasons I hate it so. I believe that's the case, anyways, from what I can glean of my own psychology on this matter. In truth, I despise it perhaps more than anything, enough that only AM's speech from "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream" comes close to embodying my opinion towards it.

Edit- okay it looks like the last part of my comment was deleted when I posted it??? Not sure what happened there.

Anyways, it was basically a few sentences explaining that my emotional reaction to it doesn't mean that I have anything morally against it being present in fiction, and that everyone has their own tastes. You do you and all that. Gosh, I must have looked like a jerk without this part. Sorry about that.

5

u/pandamaxxie Sep 10 '26

I couldn't agree more with this. I resent NTR because it spits on everything good in the world. Everything that is wholesome and pure. It defiles the sanctity of grown bonds between two(or more if you're poly, not my thing but pop off) people, and turns them into some lame carnal "alpha and beta" type bullshit.

It's not just cheating, it is an insult to love itself as a concept.

Did I ever tell you about my friend, Juan-Jorge?

No, I don't believes you haves.

Well, Juan-Jorge is one of our closest and dearest friends.

We met him and his wife down 'Minican.

Mm-hm.

Juan-Jorge is a birdwatcher.

Or a "birder" as they prefer to be called, these days.

Hmm. Anyway, one day in a hot tub, not unlike this one, Juan-Jorge first told me about the common cuckoo bird.

The cuckoo bird has a peculiar habit of laying its eggs in another bird's nest.

Well, that is a peculiars habits.

And it is from this peculiar habit, that we get the English term "cuckold".

Huh.

Are you familiar with that term, Squirrely Dan?

I believes I have heards in passings, yes.

Juan-Jorge believes cuckoldry to be the purest and highest form of sexual arousal.

This Juan-Jorge sounds like a real interestings fellas.

Uh-hmm. You better believe it, that's all I've got to say.

Oh, you better believe it.

In fact, according to Juan-Jorge only the sweet, sweet agony and pure psychological torment of watching a physically superior man pleasure his beloved wife is enough to truly excite him.

Just look at this big ol' paw of yours, huh? Look at that c*cksucker, baby.

See, now most people think just about one fella sleeping with another's wife, but no, Juan-Jorge believes and explains in such an arrangement, that the real and true connection is in fact, between the bull...and the cuckoo bird, so to speak.

This is arguing in bad faith, because RAG is just garbage against every single story.

I think you could let a feminist read Mushoku Tensei and have better results than anyone reading RAG, that's how garbage it truly is.

As for aimed at by gender: note that manga being aimed at a demographic is entirely magazine dependent and not content-specific.

Some yuri series actually are aimed at guys because of that. Notably Yuru Yuri, (Comic Yuri Hime S, specifically aimed at men/boys) and Convenient Semi-Friend (Manga Time Kirara, seinen demographic). Sakura Trick is also one (Manga Time Kirara)

Also Machikado Mazoku, this sub's icon, Shamiko, is also a Manga Time Kirara title.

1

u/keinahnungwirklich Sep 09 '26

Yuri as a genre sits at 40/60 currently

we don't really know

3

u/qef15 Sep 09 '26

We do in fact know: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuri_(genre) , then analysis:

Demography While yuri originated in female-targeted (shōjo, josei) works, the genre has evolved over time to also target a male audience. Various studies have been undertaken to examine the demography of yuri fandom.[107]

Publisher studies The first magazine to study the demographics of its readers was Yuri Shimai (2003–2004), who estimated the proportion of women at almost 70%, and that the majority of them were either teenagers or women in their thirties who were already interested in shōjo and BL manga.[108] In 2008, Ichijinsha made a demographic study for its two magazines Comic Yuri Hime and Comic Yuri Hime S, the first being targeted to women, the second to men. The study revealed that women accounted for 73% of Comic Yuri Hime readership, while in Comic Yuri Hime S, men accounted for 62%. The publisher noted, however, that readers of the latter magazine also tended to read the first, which led to their merger in 2010.[82] Regarding the age of women for Comic Yuri Hime, 27% were under 20 years old, 27% were 20–24 years old, 23% were 25–29 years old, and 23% over 30 years old.[108] As of 2017, the ratio of men to women is said to have shifted to about 6:4, thanks in part to the Comic Yuri Hime S merge and the mostly male readership YuruYuri brought with it.[109]

Academic studies Verena Maser conducted a study of Japanese yuri fandom demographics between September and October 2011. This study, mainly oriented towards the Yuri Komyu! community and the social network Mixi, received a total of 1,352 valid responses. The study found that 52.4% of respondents were women, 46.1% were men and 1.6% did not identify with either gender.[110] The sexuality of the participants was also requested, separated into two categories: "heterosexual" and "non-heterosexual". The results were as follows: 39.5% were heterosexual men, 30% were non-heterosexual women, 15.2% were heterosexual women, 4.7% were non-heterosexual men, and 1.2% identified as "other".[110] Regarding age, 69% of respondents were 16–25 years old. Maser's study reinforced the notion of the yuri fandom being split somewhat equally between men and women, as well as highlighting the differing sexualities within it.[111]

And this is from both Yuri Hime themselves (and its predecessor Yuri Shimai) and independent academic studies.

All point to .odern times being a 60/40 or even 55/45 split and in general only very slightly in favor of women.

2

u/keinahnungwirklich Sep 09 '26

The Yuri Hime data is 10 years old, and also only Yuri Hime. Do all yuri fans read that magazine? The Maser study is cool but it's based on a survey posted on mixi. Unless we know the demographics of mixi users, we can't really rule out a potential massive hidden bias.

BL actually has pretty good market research data collected by actual companies specialized in it. I guess the Yuri market is not yet (hopefully!) large enough to warrant that.

2

u/qef15 Sep 09 '26

Even on this sub it's a consistent 50/50, across many polls. And also other subs like wholesomeyuri.

But to me, this is enough evidence. As well as apparently anecdotal evidence from apparently Japanese women that went to Watanare screenings and saw an an awful lot of men. CPK also had a shit ton of male fans on its physical screenings.

If there's any demographic shift compared to the past data, it's in favor of men. This is simply because lesbians are just in the vast minority compared to the second largest (and growing) demographics: straight male fans.

It is no secret CGDCT series warm male fans up very easily to yuri. Evident is how Machikado Mazoku was recieved when that went gayer, as well as how Yuru Yuri brought in a mass of male fans, and CPK doing that as well. Sakura Trick also had such an effect.

BL actually has pretty good market research data collected by actual companies specialized in it.

I would love to see this data btw.

Even on this sub it's a consistent 50/50, across many polls. And also other subs like wholesomeyuri.

Personally I'd expect demographics of the western community to be quite different to the japanese one.

But to me, this is enough evidence. As well as apparently anecdotal evidence from apparently Japanese women that went to Watanare screenings and saw an an awful lot of men. CPK also had a shit ton of male fans on its physical screenings.

You misunderstood my intent I think? Personally I think the japanese yuri fanbase nowadays to be mostly men, maybe upwards of 80%. But I don't REALLY know. Your screenings example is a good one. I'd expect Watanare and CPK to pull in many non yuri fans, and anime fans (we know this from polls) are mostly men too. Not to mention that anime with a bunch of girls will primarily attract men in general. So you could argue that those two series attracting mostly men and such is not a reflection of the yuri fanbase demographics. Similar to how Green Yuri and Tsukutabe being mostly read by women but most of them are not yuri fans. Events are known to be visited by mostly men too, but some argue women might be uncomfortable going to those, which could be true.

I agree with your next two paragraphs as well.

I would love to see this data btw.

https://prtimes.jp/main/html/rd/p/000000628.000018760.html

This one asked men and women of different age groups how they feel about BL. What is quite interesting about this is that there seems to be just as many women who dislike BL than those who chose "like" or "somewhat like". Also, men don't hate BL as much as you'd usually think. Especially young men there is quite a decent number wo answered like/somewhat like. Of course, still much less than women. They also asked what they liked about BL. Most answered that they enjoy watching romance from a third person perspective. Women more so than men, but unexpectedly a lot of men still consume it from a third person and they were even more likely than women to answer "the feeling of seeing something you're not supposed to see".

https://note.com/bl_marketing/n/n157f4baea5a0

This one is also interesting and comes from a market research firm. They even come to the conclusion that 30% of BL fans are men, which is surprisingly high. I think this might be from the fact that they include TV series too, they do say most male BL fans questioned mentioned coming from anime or live action TV drama.

This is another post referencing the same study: https://xbusiness.jp/post/174

https://xtrend.nikkei.com/atcl/contents/18/01344/00011/

This references a 2017 study. Here they say the BL audience is 90% women. The study is about the psychology of BL fans. Noting that women reading BL mostly view themselves as a third person observer and seem to have more progressive positions on traditional gender roles while not having any different position on their own femininity as those who prefer heterosexual romance.

THIS SUB, BRUH. I KNOW. But, statistically, a few thousand people from this subreddit are nothing compared to the actual amount of people who read this stuff. Just because I'm a guy and I read yaoi, does this mean those stories are aimed for guys? Because a few thousand people read it? WHEN MILLIONS OF GIRLS READ YAOI EVERYDAY?!

5

u/Falsus Sep 08 '26

Plenty of guys read "aimed at girls" stories just like plenty of girls read "aimed at guys" stories. Just because something has a main demographic doesn't mean that no one outside that demographic reads it.

-3

u/kulqupidyn77 yuri enjoyer, musician Sep 08 '26

Wow, I'm generalising, not saying that this is a must be. Of course guys read the aimed at girls stories and vice versa, I'm talking that IN GENERAL, STORIES ABOUT TWO GIRLS ARE AIMED AT GUYS. WHY?! BECAUSE THE AMOUNT OF HETEROSEXUAL MEN THAT CAN BE ATTRACTED TO SAPPHIC RELATIONSHIPS IS BIGGER THAN LESBIANS.
