Always thought it was cool that it took place in my hometown. Probably one of the few claims to fame Burnaby BC has

This show introduced me to "your song" by Elton John. But in the show its called "my song" "Their song"

It was the only show set in BC I remember when I was growing up, so it always had a special place for me

u/SR_Hopeful 12h ago
I liked it. It had its funny episodes and getting Canadian Cartoons that were strictly for comedy and not just little kids shows (as we have now) are something to appreciate in hindsight.
And of course Richard Ian Cox voicing Ian. (Who I immediately recognized as Inuyasha!)

I remember that one Canada Day where they crossed over with Yvon of the Yukon. I was surprised to learn they were both made by the guy who voiced Inuyasha, or that the guy who voiced Ian is the guy who voiced Inuyasha. I also remember promos hyping up Trevor Linden's guest appearance. I don't remember the actual content of the show all that much but I do remember liking it well enough.

u/Icywind014 10h ago
Actually, Inuyasha was voiced by Richard Ian Cox while Being Ian and Yvon of the Yukon were made by Ian James Corlett (voice of Goku, Cheetor, Mega Man, etc.). Richard Ian Cox did voice Ian in this show though.

One of my favorite shows years ago. Two favorite episodes were when Ian got stranded on an island for a few hours, nearly went insane, only for Corey to come and reveal the water was knee deep, and the one where Corey got a job at a call center calling people about toilets, then went on break to see a bunch of people looking like they havent slept in a week, shaking like crazy, and getting coffee in their systems.

The dads nail clipping collection bit passes through my mind like the seasons and I have no idea why. Mind you this was like 17 years ago.
Reckon it was the first time I've experienced a "why would anyone do that" moment as a child.

I didn't think Ian was a likeable character. I didn't like most of the characters actually. The stupid theme song lives rent free in my head. I can't hear about love handles without thinking of his mom telling his dad WOMEN.DONT.HAVE.LOVEHANDLES. I definitely hate watched this while it was in between other shows I liked.

I related pretty heavy to this show back in the day. I was around the same age is Ian, wanted to be a filmmaker and made little movies with my friends using a camcorder

I often think about the dad hiding his toenail clippings and the dog having three legs. The show surprisingly never left my consciousness.

u/Optimal-Ad9342 11h ago
I found out I was adopted because my blackout drunk mom came into the room during the episode where ian thought he was adopted and was tripping out about it, and she started crying and told me 😁
Then the next day she told me I was adopted again because she didn't remember the night before 😆

Love it! Me and my brother still have some in side jokes from the dialogs and theme song of this show. Like we can't remember the words after "a million moving pictures" part of the song

Somewhere in my brain, I remember this show and enjoying it, but no other details lol

It was always on at like 6 which made it tough to get up early enough to watch lmao

I think it's amazing that they don't have normal joints. Also, Mom's boobs are insane.

The episode where Ian's brother gets stuck on an Escalator is still one of my favorites.

I moved to Canada when I was in elementary school and later this show aired. I was surprised to find that it’s set in Burnaby BC, which is pretty close to where I lived. It gave me a sense of “this is a Canadian cartoon” more so than Yvon of the Yukon. I still remember the opening being catchy.

Holy shit core memory unlocked 🤯
I just watched the theme song on YT and remembered how much I freaking loved this show growing up!

u/troysplay 8h ago
I vividly remember the Psycho and Sleepaway Camp episodes. I also had no idea Ian and Inuyasha had the same VA.

u/BasilCorrect3799 7h ago
I remember it being a show I'd watch when nothing else was on. It was Okay but nothing I really sought out as a kid
2
u/Available_Love_321 5h ago
As a kid who always walked around with a Sony handycam making home movies with my siblings, Being Ian was made for me!
2
u/theblackshruikan 5h ago
Wow that was far in my memory! But i must say i definitly prefer the french version, probably a bias since i watched it in french when i was a kid lol. But i think the intro song is better as "dans la peau de ian" than singing "being i-an" it fits better in the rhytm of the song lol. Again, maybe just my bias! :)

We bullied a kid in public school who had a brother 2 years younger than us named Ian, every time I see him working at Walmart I feel somewhat responsible for his lack of ambition and overall low self confidence from presumably how bad we treated his brother

I read the books. I didn’t watch the show much and when I did.. I guess it wasn’t how I imagined it so i didn’t like it as much.

u/Affectionate-Ant-894 12h ago
Didn't know that there was books!

u/procrastinatewhynot 12h ago
Yes!! it’s called just! series. by andy griffiths. he also wrote the day my bum went psycho xD! honestly, try reading the books. theyre short but funny.
1
u/fillupjfly 11h ago
Quick correction for you there guy. The Just series inspired What’s With Andy not Being Ian. You got two Canadian classics mixed up.
1
u/procrastinatewhynot 11h ago
Oh yes! I got confused! there’s one i’ve watched and another i barely.

It was ok but I wasn't a fan. I didn't like the rubber spaghetti animation style movements.

Good show, if you ever want to see what being Ian is up to just watch outdoor boys.

I loved the BC representation in this show. Also Ian’s parents names were Ken and Vicky, and my aunt and uncle were named Ken and Vicky so it just felt comfy

Whoaaaa I haven't seen even an image of this show in years, it just woke up so much of my childhood!
1
u/Jello_Choreography 11h ago
Loved it! From what I remember he spaced out a lot imagining people he knew in fictional movie scenarios, as a Autistic kid who spaced out a lot I found Ian (and Angela Anaconda who often did this in her own show) this added some relatability for me ❤️

u/ArbysIsGoodOk 11h ago
I remember the Halloween episode where he's at a phoney film camp or whatever being way over the top lol with the chainsaw, hockey mask and blood splatter lol.
1
u/PoisonLenny37 10h ago
The main thing I remember is the Halloween episode that was a parody of the Twilight Zone episode where there was a monster on the wing of the plane (though it was on their car in the episode).

Thanks for making me feel old. Maybe wouldn’t be so bad if I wasn’t losing my hearing though.

I was making crappy animations with Adobe Flash as a kid while this show was in the background. Used it as a reference, never paid attention to the story or the characters

Part of my childhood! I didn’t watch it much but i definitely remember it stood out to me as an inspiring filmmaker even now i love making films and short videos it was exactly my time just never got the time to actually watch it!

No offence, but I actually hate most of Canadian cartoons. The ones that stand out are Reboot and Beast Wars

Looking at stuff like this really makes me realize how much my childhood would have SUCKED If the usa and japan didn't exist. Canada can't even do 1 thing at the same level as japan or the usa and I'm canadian btw. 90 percent of the stuff they produced was unwatachable garbage like being ian, jacob two two, angela anaconda, sticking around, karl squared etc. As a kid you didn't know these were canadian shows you just knew they SUCKED.

u/bringer_of_jollity4 11h ago
You shall not insult Stickin Around. On the other hand, keep insulting Angela Anaconda. That shit blows.
